I don't know this sport, baseball, that well when it comes to more specific rotations and positions. So please correct me if I'm wrong. Everyone on the starting lineup except the pitcher (Unless pitcher also bat and pitch like Shohei Otani). Plays defense and offense as well. This sounds like the players did their job defensively well enough. Just no one able to bat well during the postseason / playoffs. As we all know well. Judge struck out many, many times and underperformed. Sounds like the Yankees either need to perform better offensively while maintaining the already good defense (By signing more pitchers lol) or made any good signings to boost their offense. With the money now spent on Judge's extension. I understand why they aren't able to afford to sign bigger name batters like Trea Turner, Carlos Correa, and Xander Bogaerts are some great examples. Yankees are known for being one of the wealthiest sport teams in the world. So why didn't they sign these big players that could've made a difference?

I think this is true to some extent, but the Mariners’ lineup last year was even more power-focused and they didn’t seem to struggle like the Yankees did. Still lost of course but they were able to find some timely hits that the Yankees couldn’t. Although part of that could just be the Mariners pitching keeping the Astros within reach.

Yankees absolutely got better on offense than going into last year. We had Gallo and Hicks starting in left and center. The team is faster, will have improved contact, and is better than last season at 3 positions and exactly the same at the other 6. The team Benefits from a combination of Cabrera and Ortega over their left field last season and Bader in Center with Judge in right is an upgrade over Judge in center and whoever in right. Peraza appears to be an upgrade offensively overIKF as well. Plus Volpe joining probably by mid season gives them even more speed. Yankees might lead the league in steals this year. That will be a big help offensively.

Really? As a third party, I feel like the Astros regressed slightly. I really think letting go of Verlander is big because a lot of their pitchers haven’t pitched a lot of innings before. Also, Jose Abreu is an overrated pick up imo. Dude is getting up there in age, I wouldn’t be surprised if he falls off. Also, even if he performs like a lot of people hope/expect, it’s not much of an upgrade from last year’s play off run. Yuli Gurriel was smoking hot in the postseason. The Yankees probably need to add two more solid bats to compete with the Astros though. So far, NY slightly improved while Houston slightly regressed.

They won’t beat Houston until there is a culture change in NY. Last year you saw Brian Cashman say the only reason they don’t have a ring is because the Astros cheated, and you heard Sevy say the Astros “got lucky” in the ALCS, and they made excuses about the roof being open etc. Can you imagine the 90’s Yankees dynasty saying stuff like that? There’s no accountability and right now the Astros are so deep in their minds, I just don’t see anything changing this year.

Houston is overall the best team in baseball. Yeah they have had complications in the past such as the cheating and World Series loses afterwards, but at least they keep making deep runs in the playoffs. 😬 I don't know if they can in the post-season. Like the regular season, sure, but post? Idk. I would say they had a shot if they won at least one game this past ALCS, but they lost all 4 and before that, they struggled with the Guardians. We've seen this trend not only in the AL but NL. You can be great all year like the Dodgers, you can break records like the Yankees, but at the end of the day, no matter how many delayed games you get or how many games you've won, if you can't beat the team that has beaten you in the last three ALCS you've appeared in against them, what else can you do? It reminds me of the early 00s Patriots vs Colts, Brady vs Manning. Both had great teams built around them and yet Colts always felt short, until the 2006 Superbowl.

Being fair, the ALCS roster was NOT the A-Team. It was the remains from a team ravaged by injuries. Guys on the field who shouldn’t have been. Guys not quite back from injury. I don’t judge the Yankee lineup based on the ALCS. Going in I knew we had no shot, I was honestly happy we were at least having close games. Not like we were getting crushed.

1) Astro dominance over the Yankees began in 2015 when Houston won the one-game Wild Card playoff as Dallas Keuchel spun a shutout. 2) The Astros added Jose Abreu to last year's lineup. The Yankees added...eh, um, uh 3) Cortes and Montas are ALREADY injured before Spring Training officially starts. 4) Cole is career 1-2 against Astros in regular season. Rodon is 2-0 but with five no-decisions.

Actually, the Astros ownership of the Yankees didn't start in 2017, but rather 2015, when they ousted the Yankees from the playoffs in the Wild Card game. Ironically, it has been reported that the Yankees were using their own "illegal" sign-stealing technique back then, a technique that was later brought over to the Astros and modified when McCann and Beltran joined the team.

Good stuff. I am particularly interested in seeing just how the rules changes affect the game this year. We know that more athletic middle infielding will be rewarded due to no shifts. So... does that mean not only left-handed pull hitters greatly benefit, but heretofore "sluggish" offenses like the Yankees? Hmm. Time will tell, but perhaps NY will reap some benefits that they didn't have last season. Shifting REALLY kills momentum and stops rallies before they get going, so who knows? There are lots of other factors to be sure, but I am psyched to see it unfold this year, starting with spring training.

Good move by the Yankees to improve their rotation. But then again their main issue was hitting vs. the Astros at last year's championship series. 3 out of the 4 games they lost in that series were by 2 runs or less, the other loss they got completely blanked out 5-0. Let's be honest, this is basically the exact same offense, Judge probably already peaked last year. Bader will not maintain the type of hitting he had in the postseason last year throughout a whole regular season and it's probably safe to expect some regression by Rizzo/LeMahieu/Stanton. I think they'll need to add an impact bat by the deadline if they are to win.

I personally don't think there is a quick or easy fix for their woes. Injuries have been a major part of the Yankees lineup for 10 years now. They even went and hired one of the best trainers in baseball but it barely slowed it down, the same people are still missing long periods every season. The strange lineups and position changes we see just so they can play the big contract guys with the young talent has to stop. Put the 9 most productive people on the field to start the year despite contract size and years with the team and build team chemistry with them. Dump all the bad contracts you can and just concentrate on being the best team you can and don't even worry about the Astros. Adopt a small ball mentality and work at chipping away at teams instead of waiting for the grand gesture with a homerun hit into another county.

It’s funny how people look back on a series and look at a home run or timely hit as the difference. When you pay attention you see there were walks, stolen bases, errors, managerily moves, third base coaches sending or holding runners, going 1st to 3rd, putting pressure on defense…all these factors that aren’t talked about play into it and that’s the hardest thing to accept about this stats driven era. They don’t know the actual game and are the intricacies that effects the outcomes. Not all of baseball is measurable. It is about instinct and strategy. Situational awareness and a sort of chess. It’s a shame how much understanding baseball is just too much to ask for the typical fan now days. It’s been boiled down to mathematical probability which means less risk taking and less excitement. Miss the cardinals of the 1980s and teams that maximized the strategy of baseball

Houston still needs to win another. You mean to tell me that’s their ceiling? That’s my disagreement to the last thing he said about them lifting a “weight” off their shoulders. But with that being said, he’s 100% right. Houston only added a first baseman, lost verlander and they’re still on track to do it again. My solution. Adopt Houston’s playbook. More cheating. Lol I’m kidding. Youth. They kept their core, then got rid of baggage they didn’t need and brought up the youth. The Yankees have this old philosophy that Vets are needed. @@markgiordonello6710 I hope so. We did have some roster changes. Like I said last year it will really come down to our pitching. I hope some of our young guys like Kirby, munoz and Gilbert have continuous success and continue to become some of the best pitchers in the league. They have true promise. Brash needs to work his command command. If he could figure that out I think he could attempt to start again. Hernandez coming in is interesting and hope it works out. He seems positive about it and I think that’s a huge step to being successful after a trade. I could go on forever about this term. Lots of pros and a few cons. But again we have one of the youngest teams in the league so they are learning and getting better.

Since the Astros started this run back in 2017 have they had any major injuries to a star player? Or players at the same time? Something that could really diminish how they play. If they haven't it would be interesting to see how they handle that.

So as a Astro fan I can admit the Yankees got much better with rodon on the team but the problem is going to be keeping Nestor healthy, hell it’s February and this guy has hamstring issues and spring training hasn’t even started. There bullpen is a mess and they really don’t have a closer, Josh Donaldson is going to have a Joey gallo season, hicks is going to pretend to be hurt so he want hear the boo’s. 3 really young hitters in the lineup who are going to have to take their licks is going to affect the offense. I’m sorry 2023 the Yankees are destined for the wild card because as usual cashman 1920 mindset will once again doom their team. I really do feel bad for Yankee fans

Honestly I think their biggest comp might be the Rays, Rays just got rid of the CF and 1B but they knew what they were doing, we have a young stud in Josh Lowe coming up and even though he struggled in 22 he is showing major signa of potential, and for 1st we got aranda and paredes, and we also have a promising bat for RF in Ramirez who hit 300 last year, and with Mejia getting eye surgery he may be due for a breakout year.
