kinda mindblowing the final FDS game was out two years before the Playstation launched. What a wild evolution...

In some countries, NES came out two years before Playstation did. Really, I'm not joking.

@@PeperonyChease Poland and possibly the rest of eastern europe. They already had unofficial reproductions of the Famicom hardware capable of playing pirate cartridges as early as 1990, but the official NES came out in 1994, only two years before both Playstation and Saturn, and two years after Sega Mega Drive. To no surprise, the real NES was a commercial failure in this part of europe (most likely for its pretty high price and obsolete hardware). Although SNES and Game Boy came out around the same time, while I'm not sure how well SNES did, Game Boy is said to have been very successful.

Congrats Stranger, and thanks for your hard work bringing us all the great videos over the years. For the longest time I had written off the NES/Famicom as played out, primitive, and lacking titles that held up with time. Famidaily and the year of FDS completely changed my mind and I appreciate these monumental systems and their libraries more than ever.

7:49 Wait, Nintendo officially supported the FDS disk writer system until 2003!? That's 17 years after it was released, and 2 years after the Game Cube was released. That's got to be some sort of record.

That's the same year they stopped manufacturing the Famicom, too. There are Famicoms that were made after Metroid Prime came out...

This is a really nice game to end off on, as the lead character is literally the mascot behind everything. It'd be like if the final Wii game was John Mii himself. With the Disk System ending off, Nintendo would never make another disk adapter thingy for an already existing console ever again. Nope. Nothing came out in 1999. Didn't happen.

I salute you FDS and RndStranger. Yet another system down and one mystery of a system to many who maybe only scratched that surface. What another epic ride, and curious to see what's next, hopefully sticking to Nintendo still, it only would be right to stay 8bit for now with Gameboy, or if that mountain is a bit much, the 16bit iteration era of all these goodies and new ideas to come. Well done, and can't wait to see what's next. I'll stick if the ride is something I'm invested in, but hey if not, even kept on a spin, this along with the FC itself provides a HUGE level of content to just let ride by the yearly playlists. I hate seeing such a low sub base, this deserves some compensation as it's a quality show, and yeah, short as it is, it's quite the show.

This was a cool game for the system to go out on, a bit unique and also very representative of the system in some ways. Loved watching along with this series all year!

I honestly think this is a great way for the Disk System to go out. It's a neat concept for a game with a fun presentation with its little story and cute characters. Of all the janken video games this one makes it feel the MOST like a GAME. So creative. It feels like a lot of love went into this game, the only other release from 1992, and all the way at the end of the year. I would have bought this for sure.

If I had a nickel for every character in a Nintendo magazine getting a game on a doomed console, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

What an interesting way to close the system, despite being soukoban style puzzle game it looks worth a shot. Just like the FDS it just ended, Nintendo and Konami absolutely carried the system but it felt like a system that was made out of spite and just kept around despite not reaching a lot of audience in comparison to the Famicom.

Woohoo! Congrats on the end of the Year of FDS, and thank you so much for the coverage of all these games I never would have heard about otherwise. I joined when you released your video on Fire Rock, after which I watched every previous Year of FDS video, every Famidaily video, and then caught back up after that. Happy new year!

Well, FDS ended its lifespan with a pretty odd but somehow very wise at its presentation one. I mean, Disk-kun puzzle could be a huge hit if released in 1987 :) Happy holidays and see you next year, RndStranger! :)

Goodbye Famicom Disk System... As for this game, yeah this is a fine puzzle game. I'm glad Diskun got their own game even if its tied to Famicom Magazine. I'm glad Nintendo tried supporting this add-on for as long as possible even if it made more sense that cartridges outpaced those floppys.

oh wow I never knew disk-kun had his own FDS game! IDK if that's an exclusive club to be proud of being a part of, though... I do dig the concept though, sokoban meets jan-ken-pon with an RPG setting wrapped around it? This was quite the journey though I was a little familiar with the FDS and some of the games, like the original versions of zelda and metroid, and of course SMB: The lost levels. so I certainly learned a lot over this past year!

I remember Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga had an unused enemy in one of its prototypes that resembled a black Disk-Kun. I wonder if that was a direct nod to the dark Disk-Kun in the magazine's comics?

@yoymate631 Only technically. It's largely owned by Nintendo since they have majority ownership over Creatures Inc on top of their own stakes. I'll consider Pokemon not a Nintendo IP if it loses Nintendo exclusivity and we both know that'll never happen.

And so, the Disk System dies with a weird block pushing puzzle game, with adventure game elements, starring an underutilised mascot, made by a magazine company, which ultimately sold no copies. So, just about the most bizare and apropriate Disk System way to die.

So this was really supposed to be Disk-kun in this? I remember back in the early 2000s when stuff was still vague outside of Japan, this was described as a "dungeon crawler starring Disk-kun", but in later years, seeing as Nintendo didnt release this, it seemed more likely that this was just a very similar character the magazine had created that had nothing to do with Nintnedo's official mascot for the platform. Was there an actual deal in place where Nintendo allowed them to use the character for their magazine, as well as star in this game? Then again, if its from the disk writer kiosk, I guess Nintendo would have a greater hand in its distribution and thus possible ties to it.

Imagine making a solid final game for a console and then the only way to distribute it on a mass scale gets literally ripped out of stores I would be mad, honestly The only final game that isn't a Fifa released 10 years after relevancy and they fumble it Good job, Nintendo
