I love this song, too. But I dont understand when someone loves a song from long ago then feels to need to make a sweeping statement like everything nowadays is "garbage". That is just not true. There is so much great music being made right now - 2024 - just as beautiful & melodic & catchy as Year Of The Cat. You just have to know where to find it. Avett Brothers, Olive Jones, Bob Schneider, Dawes, Blind Pilot, Josh Ritter, Jason Isbell, Smooth Hound Smith, Iron & Wine, etc.

The performance of this song is a perfect example of synergy. Each instrument, the vocals, and the lyrics all meld together into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. No need to go on, as many of the comments here nailed all the nuances and captivating aspects of this song. Simply mesmerizing.

This song along with Baker St and songs from Boz Scaggs, Pink Floyd, Stones and others was what made of that time period parallel to disco music, and flowed into the 80s, it sure was a spoil for choice back then. Makes me always think how we moved away from that kind of middle of the road music.

This is one of the greatest songs ever written. That is not mere hyperbole. It is a fact. The lyrics are not only one of the greatest lyric poems ever written, but the music complements it perfectly. It is a song that transports you to another place and another time. Everything seems strange and beautiful at the same time. It is a place you don't want to leave, and a place your mind and spirit return to again and again for a restorative drink in its waters. Thank you so much, Al, for this timeless masterpiece. I hope it lives on until the end of time.

Agreed - the lyrics are just so dense with mood-evoking and visual imagery, every line so clever you just can't help smiling and appreciating the lyrical genius. A short-form compressed romantic story set to 4 1/2 minutes of unforgettable music. And as you said, just such a rolling, hook-filled melody, it's a perfect match for the incredible lyrics. (However, to be honest, for the life of me I could never figure out what was "The Year of the Cat"! 🤣)

I had the privilege of growing through my teen years in the 1970's . Am I biased ? I feel like we had the best music then, and it makes me feel sorry for the young people today. Baker Street, Just The Way You Are, by Billy Joel. All the great Elton John, Billy Joel, Al Stewart, Gary Wright, Seals and Crofts, America, The Eagles. That music still makes me feel young. Still get the same gut feeling from it.

Your mention of Baker Street really caught my eye. I'm a few years older than you but I was raised by my very restrictive grandparents. Less sheltered, more like a captive so it took me a few years to fully get me feet under me after graduating HS in '72. So, to a degree we were in the same place in the 70s. A few of my favorites, of course the Beatles (truly a one of one), Billy Joel, Three Dog Night, Bad Company, Rod Stewart, Glen Campbell, Linda Ronstadt among the many. Conversely, I'm or at least was, more of an 80s guy as far as music and pop culture goes. However, this is about 2 songs that I closely associate. Year of the Cat and Baker Street. I've always associated those to songs very closely although there is no absolutely objective reason for doing so. Thus, you could say that it is my own visceral response which is correct. Superficially, they are similar in that they were both recorded by Scottish artists, both "one hit wonders" and both rose to No. 8 on Billboard. I won't delve into the artistry other than to say both songs are uniquely rich, original have meaningful lyrics that speak of love but neither are conventional love songs. They both convey a wistful melancholy that reaches into the soul. Two great, great songs that are probably underappreciated.

I can't tell you how much I love everything about this song and this particular live performance... the amazing lyrics, great music, the artistry of each musician, the whole ensemble. I was too young to fully "get" this song when I first heard it as a child, but I remember I loved it then, and now as an adult I have a much greater appreciation for it. Songs like this are timeless and I hope my young child -- now the same age I was when I first hear this -- likewise will retain and grow an appreciation for "real" music such as this, such beautiful poetry set to sound. Thanks, Al Stewart and band!

Recuerdo que los grupos locales se esforzaban por hacer una interpretacion de esta cancion pero obviamente los acordes los tiempos el ritmo tenia que estar casi perfectos por lo menos para que se pareciese a la original era todo un reto..gran recuerdo

A great song, beautiful lyrics and perfectly performed by real, talented musicians who have studied and know their art. A lot of today’s music sounds like chancers running amok in a recording studio without permission to be there.
