SH2R gets my vote as most irritating and pointless game of 2024. As you say, filmmakers would not attempt to remake Citizen Kane, so why remake Silent Hill 2? Something that I’ve noticed in regards to the original RE4 is that somehow a game from two decades ago had much more consistent gameplay mechanics and elements than its modern “successor” with the easiest example being the way enemies get stunned every time you headshot them vs. the remake where it’s a much less guaranteed risk/reward factor. It wasn’t just the lack of pretension or left-wing propaganda that made older games more fun, they just had much more consistency and uniqueness. They treated their players in more clever ways.

Holy, thank you for that SH2R take. I've been saying that since I played it back when it came out but no one seems to agree. I played the original SH2 for the first time as a far back as only 3 years ago and loved it so much I picked up speedrunning just to keep playing it. This remake is such an atrocity on every front and actively mocks the player by teasing the "og puzzle solutions" whilst providing the most braindead puzzles perhaps in the entire series. A blind playthrough of SH2 takes roughly 13 hours, but over 30 hours in SH2R. 30 hours of the same hallways, the same enemies, and the same puzzles. The gameplay is so abysmal and droning, I forgot the story. The voice acting was not good and all I can remember is how often they actively sabotaged it by directly quoting the original, butchering the context of those lines and all of the actors refusing to include the complex, perhaps even coincidental, nuance that the original has. To anyone who disagrees, I implore you play the original with the enhanced edition mod. SH2 is a free game and so easy to set up.

half the game is padding, many psychological horror elements had to be scraped altogether because the god awful over-the-shoulder Resident Evil wannabe camera didn't allow it, the sound design is a downgrade, the music is all over the place, the ambience soundscape placement is not tailored for each room because they copied how doors work from the REmakes, the original music is mixed with some slop made by a literal who, there's too much ambient silence and never true silence, making you never feel truly alone. The voice acting is soulless, the otherworld is too hellish for SH2, the combat is annoying and gets in the way, the letter reading at the end is soul crushingly stale and emotionless, etc etc etc. There's absolutely nothing in this demake that holds a candle to SH2, except for graphics.

Like no fcking shit a mOdErNizEd version of a timeless masterpiece will inevitably turn out to be at least a "good" game. The issue is that was it really necessary to pull something like this off? What exactly does this DEI-ridden Unreal Engine demo ass SH2 retread bring to the table for games a medium? A faithful remaster of the original or just a simple port would've sufficed and the people glazing this slop would've eaten it up all the same. @ Facts! Most these remakes didn’t even need to happen.. I mean OG RE4 or Dead Space is still available on modern platforms and is still completely playable. Yeah they’re admittedly at least mediocre or even "good" by modern standards but that’s mainly BC they’re remasters of modern classics. IMO they lose much of their identity in translation from the original to the remake. These modern writers and developers are simply not as good as those who came before BC those before could make more with less, these days they got countless technological advances and yet they make less with more.

Game was also buggy but bugs I don’t mind. That game at least, is a game that coulda used a remake. The original game was very old and not easily accessible unless you owned a PC so I don’t see it as egregious an example as the likes of RE4 Remake, a game that didn’t need a remake whatsoever.

Its either botched remaster or remake that is forgotten in a month even though people hyped it up as some game of the year (looking at Dead Rising Deluxe) or some B team project that was pushed out to make some profit so company wont go bankrupt. Hell, even flash games on newgrounds, armor games or kongregate had more love and work put into them and they were free. Its even more sad when you know that Star Wars Outlaws is from same developers that gave us Far Cry, a game where you burn down tea factory while MC Panjabi (4th game) is playing in the backround or where you have mission testy-festy (if you know you know).
