I absolutely loved the Yellow Wallpaper. I listened to the audiobook in Armenian instead of the original, but still, it was beautifully written. From the beginning, one can sense that something is off about how the main character - Jane - is treated by her husband - John - and her brother. While both are indeed doctors, they do not let the possibility of her not being "sick" exist. Not only are they sure about their diagnosis, but they are forcing it on Jane, who eventually was made to conform. Then, later on, when they move to the new house with that Yellow Wallpaper, Jane at last finds her mission in freeing the woman she sees in the wallpaper. Now, the wallpaper and the wall are definitely metaphorical, but even if not looked that way, her freeing of the woman and becoming her celebrates her true liberation from her husband. The story siginifes to me how the yellow wallpaper could be replaced with any other color or object, but still end up like in the story. The libreation was inherent to Jane; it was only a matter of time, and the color of the wallpaper perhaps.

note: there is no jane. she is just the narrator with no name. so just call her narrator. she also sees multiple women at the end the narrator becomes convince she is the women trap inside the wall paper.

She says the name Jane near the end of the story. I think it’s just a nickname for Jennie

the woman in the wallpaper took over the writing? or it was one of her personalities?

Basically it sounds like this woman was suffering from a mental disease and went nuts at the end. I always just thought the whole story was a metaphor for Jennie being trapped by overbearing 'there, there dear', men so she became someone else. The story is worth a read for the fantastic writing and visuals, but is pretty bland for our time.

This is a beautiful short story about post partum depression, less understood by men around Jane but only her. A classic piece of women’s writing.

@CJBlack005 жыл бұрын
@@myzahra4029 Thanks, you're right, Jennie is the sister in law, who was also taking care of the narrator and the household for the most part. The reason I say it is Jane who is the narrator, which I understand is debated, is because at the end when she says that she has "got out" at last and there is nothing that John or JANE could do about it, the narrator is personifying the woman in the wallpaper as if she has become her and is no longer herself, Jane. At least that's my interpretation.

Jennie is the sister and Mary is the maid/caretaker of the baby. Jane isn't identified as a character in the story, but it's assumed that Jane is the unnamed narrator.
