Andy i wouldn't worry about the voltage specs. The primary use is switch, not circuit breaker, because the BMS takes care of any overcurrent. As a professional industrial automation guy i would prefer a more sophisticated overcurrent protection, but this configuration works as well. 50mm² is good for 200A continous current, if the leads are 1,5m long and it's ok for 275A trip current. It could be thicker, but all in all nothing wrong with that. And yes, the box really seems to be of outstanding quality, not only regarding the design, but also the manufacturing. All screws accessible, beefy metal sheets, middle rail, nice busbars etc. That's really impressive.

I have ordered 3 of these and a set of rollers. Currently the best 48V horizontal box out there. Only improvements I can find is an extra plate for fixing the BMS board to avoid cracks induced by the deformation of the compression forces, and a better circuit breaker so the cabling and batteries are also protected by this breaker. Thanks for the good work Andy 😄

I think it’s a lot better than the one I just bought. I purchased a box with a JK 200 amp BMS and it’s been a nightmare. Yes this is my first dyi installation but they could have made it a lot easier. First the 3 inch LCD was cracked and unusable second no matter what I did I couldn’t get any voltage to the external terminals. Building it was the easy part setting it up to work impossible. My mistake was not knowing the BMS that I was getting. I suppose there is a chance I damaged it when installing but everything except the SOC LEDS and no power out. Great job Andy.

At 9:05, I wonder Andy if they Are they using the dual pole breaker contacts in parallel to double the Interrupting current capacity of from 7,500 amps to 15,000 amps to meet the potential short-circuit inrush current potential of the battery which may be at least 10,000amps? My thought as to the 550A overload trip current possibly being too high for the design might not be major issue, as it is in sires with the BMS that provides some level of overload protection, and the breaker is serving mostly as short-circuit protection device, and as you suggest serves more as an 'On-Off' switch. As for the sizing of the conductors going from the BMS to the breaker and out to the terminals being undersized for 550A continuous current, again you have the BMS to limit current and the breaker appears to be function as short-circuit protection, and limiting the size of the conductors to the intended max current of the BMS, may help in reducing potential short-circuit current giving the breaker a better chance to interrupt a short circuit without damage or failure to the breaker itself or the BMS. As for the the breaker line-load connections, and the circuit being bi-directional, from what I recall about Circuit Breaker design, current direction may have more to do with meeting short-circuit current interruption rating and the design of the contacts being able to meet spec in one direction more so in the other, and in the case of charging you also have the BMS and the undersized conductors that might may limit maximum possible short-circuit charging current to less than the breaker's designed ICU.
@david0alinda5 ай бұрын
The way they used this breaker is NOT ok. You cannot "stack" Ics values as it will be a lottery as to where the bulk of your current goes when in parallel. Even a tiny amount of resistance difference between the poles makes a huge difference in current carried. Next to that, with DC-breakers, the directionality has to do with arc suppression. It says on the label "mount vertical" which is because of the suppression chamber being in the correct orientation. As this one is mounted, only when charging, or with a short INSIDE the battery in a multiple battery system, will the arc be quenched in a correct way. When the short is outside of the battery; better not to have any body parts in close proximity. This also answers the question af another poster here about being able to mount this box on it's rear. By the way, kudo's for the CN manufacturer for labeling this breaker with relevant information. Many leave lots do be desired. In short: opening DC-currents is a very tricky business, and this one has gotten it wrong. The only way to use this box safely is to have a correct T-class or NH fuse in close proximity to the connection.

The housing is quite ok. But not 5 out of 5 frogs. Maximum of 4 out of 5 frogs! Hi Andy, Thank you for all the information you share. I see the breaker has an ICu of 10kA, but a lithium cell has an internal resistance of approximately 0,15 milliohm which can cause a short circuit current of 3,5/0,00015 = 23kA. So the breaker could arch while tripping on short circuit. All the battery boxes I find have this same issue and it's a major safety issue I think. How do you think about this?
@peterdiyАй бұрын
Don't forget the busbars, connection to BMS and BMS itself. The resistance will be a lot higher, the current a lot lower than what you got. Plus the BMS has over-current protection.
@jeeasteeАй бұрын
@@peterdiy Yes it has overcurrent protection, but the breaker must also function when the overcurrent protection fails in a full short circuit situation.
@tmarbutАй бұрын
I've been wondering the same thing. I suppose we could approximate the resistance of all the bussing and connectors, but I agree the breaker is definitely insufficient if we disregard those resistances. It's very hard to do proper interruption for these 280AH cells, and I wonder whether the UL listed server rack batteries or wall-mount batteries that use 280AH cells (like the MidNite Solar, EG4, and SolArk wall-mount products) are actually able to interrupt their maximum short circuit current. If they are, I'll bet they are also assuming that a great deal of the resistance is in the bussing and connections.
@peterdiyАй бұрын
@@jeeastee Yes, but the breaker is not installed on the naked cell. Even just the welded on studs add resistance. For cells tested at factory with 0.17mOhm I was told by the seller to expect about 0.20mOhm measured on the studs. By the time you include the bus-bars that will be a lot more again. As a result the maximum current the breaker ever will see and has to break is a lot lower. 15kA or less.
@jeeasteeАй бұрын
@@peterdiy Your right, but still I would like to see a test of the breaker in short circuit without BMS protecting for overcurrent multiple times without exploding or arching, especially when it is a breaker from a unknown brand without test certifications. I decided to buy a box without breaker but with a emergency switch and I will add a 20kA T-Fuse myself.

Maybe they meanwhile are all looking similar - is the buildquality really so much better than EEL or Seplos? The second connector on the PCB (BMS->cells) might by a active balancer connector in case you use a non JK BMS. Looks like a copy of the original EEL ones.
@mandimandi25235 ай бұрын
the question is the material - stronger than the EEL, especially for the compression? If he has a new EEL box he can compare. Advantage of the new box were the preinstallation. EEL came without any installation and no description about the screws (for what to use, so you have to find out and hopefully enough pieces ...)

Not sure about your voltage comment. I suspect your 48V battery will be in trouble if you feed 80V in and you're not likely to get 80V out either, right?
@OffGridGarageAustralia5 ай бұрын
At the end, that's what the BMS is for. If I feed 80V from solar into the batteries, it will still charge as usual, as much as the solar can deliver. The BMS watches and will disconnect if out of spec. But will the BMS still work with 80V on its input?

Andy nice looking battery box and review. I noticed that the negative and positive terminals on the front panel were on the opposite side from most rack mount batteries that I have seen. I noticed when you were loading the cells on the right side of the box that you were putting them in the box with the most positive terminal to the outside of the box. The BMS positive busbar looks like it was designed to connect to the front cell inside terminal on the right side. Also, if each breaker pole is rated for 275 A couldn't you just use one pole of the breaker to reduce the over current rating of the breaker by removing the paralleling bus bar on the battery side of the breaker to split the poles?

Some DC circuit breakers use a magnet to deviate and extinguish the electric arc that forms when breaking the circuit under load. This works only if the current is flowing in a certain direction. If the current flows in the opposite direction, the arc does not extinguish and the circuit breaker could catch fire. There are many demonstration videos on youtube about these "directional" DC circuit breakers frequently used on solar panel circuits.
@PersonalStash4205 ай бұрын
Is that what this box is using, a magnetic breaker? Is this box unsafe, in your opinion? I was thinking about getting this one but I would need to stand it vertically to fit in a small closet. Is this a bad idea? What do you think? Anyone may answer, btw. 😀

@@danielardelian2 Indeed yes only works on battery output not for battery charging - separate MCB needed. But then the main danger is battery sc with down stream inverter etc. Nvere forget the ultimate breaker is some big cable cutters hung permanently beside the box - leccy pliers wont cut it.
