I'm watching your channel for the first time. Good work. Lukumi is originated from yoruba word "olukumi" which means my friend or relation in my dialect which makes it yoruba word. Is a pity we've lost many yoruba words! I'm from Akungba - Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria. The correct pronunciation is OLÙKÙMI.

Most Yoruba people in Cuba did not come directly from Africa, but from Trinidad, in the history of Trinidad some Yoroba arrived in Trinidad free so they were able to keep most of their tradition, then Trinidad was under Spain before british fought Spanish and took over, and it became British Colony.. many of the Yoruba then migrate to Cuba which is a spanish speaking nation.

Yes, we came directly from Africa. They came from Africa to the cities of Havana and Matanzas. Those are the cities with the largest ports in Cuba. Then, the Yoruba religion spread from those cities to the rest of the island. Actually, Havana was the main port of the Spanish kingdom and the port with the most international traffic in those days. The port of Havana was so important for the merchant business and the slave market that the British attacked Havana in the 17th century and took the port and the Spanish gave the state of Florida in the US to the British as payment for recovering the port of Havana. On the other hand, it is well known that Cuba was the only country in Latin America that had Babalawo, because Havana was the only port through which slaves arrived from Ile Ife to Latin America. In Brazil, they arrived from other cities in Yoruba land, that is why they did not have Babalawo until it spread from Cuba to Latin America. To say that Yorubas came from Haiti to Cuba is very wrong, a lack of logical reasoning due to little knowledge of history. The African blacks who made the revolution by lynching the heads of all whites in Haiti, became the devil and the biggest threat to the white colonizers in the other islands in the Caribbean. They did not want blacks like that on their islands that would inspire other blacks to make a revolution and cut off their white heads. That is why Haiti was banned and Haitian blacks were not welcome as immigrants on any island nor were they allowed to come near the coasts of their islands. On the other hand, the Haitian revolution was an opportunity very well taken advantage of by the Spanish to replace Haiti as the largest sugar producing country after the French lost control of the island. It was there that the massive arrival of hundreds of thousands of Yoruba blacks to Cuba began for the massive expansion of sugar cane production to take Haiti's place in the international market. Cuba was the ideal island for Spanish bread because it is literally the largest island in the Caribbean and is not mountainous like the other small islands in the Caribbean. Cuba is a flat island with large tracts of land for agriculture. On the other hand, in Haiti the Yoruba religion does not exist and to say that Yoruba blacks from Trinidad moved to Cuba because Spanish is spoken in Cuba apparently from the historical context of the time seems like a utopia, blacks did not emigrate from one country to another freely, on the other hand Cuba was a slave country at the time there were no free blacks nor was it possible for a black person to arrive from another island and pass through customs there without a paper and say to the white colonialists in Cuba I am coming to live here and I am a free black person, they are not going to enslave me, I am going to work and they pay me a salary for an 8 hour day. I don't think it's possible that a black man could move to a slave island and be accepted as free in a world like that where blacks didn't even have the right to choose their name. I don't know how much the process of ticketing from moving to Trinidad and Cuba was in those days, but it doesn't seem possible that a black man could earn enough money to pay for a boat ticket.

@@abinibihub check your opinion pronunciation and sound sir. Oluku - friend |mi - me. (According to how they amalgamated and according to the story) Your pronunciation: Olu-ku-mi Olu-God Ku- (I cant wait phantom this adverb) Mi-me To avoid misinformation I stand to be corrected though. We are all learning. God bless you as keep promoting Yoruba culture 🙏🏾

Is this not what I said in the video. We call it olukumi and they call it Lukumi. The o is gone just like we call Yoruba and they call Oruba because they don’t have y in Spanish language. ( Spanish Influence) I hope it’s clearer now.

Not entirely true , OLUKUMI is was/ a town in Nigeria known for efun production , this is where many slaves were taken from and brought to Cuba .Google olukumi town Nigeria . In Cuba they keep the religion more secretive they do not post or record many ceremonies so they do not loose the ase . So all the real information you have to sit down with Cuban olorisha and babalawos to get . a renowned lukumi olorisha named Oba Ade Dayo has brought this information to light . And has lectures on Yoruba retention and rituals in Cuba
