I am watching this in Sep/2023... I first saw it in 1982 when I was 14 and can still quote so much of this episode. Now I fully understand how ground-shakingly huge this show was for me and my mates in Australia at the time and how the 2 series helped shape my humour ...even today if I meet someone anywhere in the world and TYO comes up and they are a fan, odds on we will get along. It's so freakin' radical for the time, and I guess you kind of had to be there to wait in anticipation for the following week and then talk about it incessantly at wherever you hung out. and the bit about the VCR is no BS, they cost a fortune to buy and a butt load to rent, and then you had to hook the whole suitcase sized machine up to the telly. Thank fk for iPhones & You Tube. and cheers to whomever uploaded this...
@A-small-amount-of-peas10 ай бұрын
You were lucky.😂 I think I was around 7 or 8 when they did Living Doll and Comic Relief which my folks let me stay up for to watch. Now this was after the show had finished and the BBC would NEVER bloody repeat it. So I could tape it. I found out years later it's to do with the nightmare of music rights. I had to wait till I was 11 when my mum managed to find "best of the young ones" VHS with five episodes of which this was one and bought it for me for Xmas. Today's generation will never know how patient past generations had to be, now we can take a device we can carry in our pocket, click the screen a few times and hey presto, there it is

13.36 for those who don't know... there is a subliminal random still image inserted into the first 5 episodes of the 2nd series of the young ones. this one was of a pottery class, others were a dripping tap, a skier, a frog and a still from the closing credits of Carry On Cowboy. this is because, like the boys in this episode, everyone in 1984 was swept up in the home video recorder craze, and the makers wanted to do a private joke for all those people who may have recorded the show. the idea was that in the final show 'summer holiday', the sixth image would have just been text along the lines of 'stop wasting your time messing around with your video', either as a caption or written on a board held by cast and crew, in a rather cruel metajoke poking fun at fans with maybe too much time and money on their hands (as VCRs easily retailed around £500+ at the time). this is all well and good so far, but the problem was the showmakers failed to mention the inclusion of this obscure gag to the BBC, as someone high up noticed these rrandom images when watching the show at home. as they investigated this and the makers told the reason why they included the images, they were told to remove them instantly but by this time 5 of the 6 shows had already been broadcast. it turns out it's nothing to do with taste or opinion, but there are many broadcasting laws that explicitly prohibit displaying subliminal images, and the BBC didn't want to risk it, so the makers agreed to remove the final image for a very convoluted, obscure, and even by their perspective, not very funny joke. so the images are in fact a set up for a joke with no punchline, or a punchline too much for Auntie BBC, perhaps a better testament of the young one's random anarchy than the original joke would've ever been.

LOVE Red Dwarf!! British comedy writing again at it's finest (and I'm an Aussie). I have brought my son up with all British comedy, Porridge, Open All Hours, Dad's Army, Blackadder, the list goes on. I grew up with The Dave Allen Show and The Two Ronnies and listening to The Goon Show in the car with my dad.
