When the going gets tough, even the toughest and most resilient in Ireland get going overseas. They have to. The once booming housing market has now crippled the Irish economy. Jobs have been obliterated and before the nation gets itself out of a black hole of debt things will probably get worse. Scores of young people are packing their bags, bidding an often heartbreaking farewell to family and friends and moving abroad in search of a more stable and prosperous future. "All our young people are going. It's not only the immigrants that have come into the country and gone home. It's all our young people, all our own are going". Like many, electrician Alan Niland is going to Australia: "Leaving here is a big thing and everyone doesn't want to go. It's a last resort really." With Ireland going to the polls, many are looking to punish politicians complicit in the economic failure whilst hoping for a new government that can lead them out of the mess.

I left Ireland during this time. I was 16 in 2010/2011... When I was growing up you could work in a Café or Building Site or even McDonalds and you could afford to go on holidays and buy a house... I was in still in school in 2008 when everything started falling apart , we lost the family business and in the end my mam had to give up our home. So at 16 , just out of school with no prospects and no work to be found I emigrated to the UK , where at the time things were much better. But now the economy is in tatters but I can't afford to move back home so for the meanwhile I'm stuck here

Thats what happens when you have crooked politicians, i left Ireland in the 80s to Australia as the politicians were telling us to leave that there was no future in Ireland i still live in Australia now and i call this my home now, when i return to Ireland on holidays and see how Ireland has changed it makes me sad to think my beautiful country is run by crooked politicians and gangsters Ireland need to tell the EU they cant look after anymore immigrants that they need to look after there own first, no more lies from politicians and leave the EU were able to go alone.

This is madness in Ireland and other EU countries where there is high youth unemployment, and their young people have to leave to find work, yet their governments allow immigration in such large numbers. It is not as if they are (mainly) coming with skills that your own young people could not do. The numbers are so unbalanced as they are mostly young men who arrive. Who are they going to settle down with? We reap what we sow and I just cannot see how this will end well. Very sad for the families in Ireland who see their young people, often never to return.

Ireland is beautiful because it's never been really industrialised but that means there aren't many jobs in the countryside and it's largely a rural country with not many cities. Also there's an aspirational aspect to Irish emigration - people looking to better themselves and their material position. Immigrants to Ireland are prepared to work in low paid jobs that maybe Irish people don't want be because they want something better.

Irish people's fate are somewhat a little similar to the fate of my home countrymen which is in a third world country, the only country in Asia that has majority of Catholics, we look for greener opportunities outside our country, seek better life in order to send money back home to our families and help improve the country's economy. Lately I've been watching documentaries about Ireland, it breaks my heart and always in tears to see what happened to them in the previous centuries which was the great Famine. In the 1960's and on, it was heartbreaking to watch seeing Irish in Dublin were in poverty, which made me wonder I was luckier to have been born in the 60's from the third world country cause we never experienced that extreme poverty. My countrymen if ever were poor are actually sustainable living in their provinces cause they can fish, plant vegetables as it grows naturally abundant because of our tropical climate. I feel sad that the Irish people especially the children had to go through that, I cannot imagine what it's like to live in a country during winter without heater or blankets etc. I observed that countries with populous of Catholics have more poor families, abortion and birth control led most poor couples make dozens of children living in slums, under the bridges, etc.. I wish my own countrymen will come across documentaries about Ireland and its people fate, to learn and be grateful for what we have or had even though it was run by corrupted government from the past and maybe in the near future, because even so we never experienced great Famine. The current government is doing its best and utmost way to evade corruption. Our people should unite rather than always complain, to better their lives.

Even today, the hurdles put in place for us to return are just shambolic and an affront to our citizenship. Its gone from a 300k surplus of homes that nobody could get a line of credit for, to property prices in my local area rising 100% in 5years. Just another generation of Irelands exiled children!

Wow. I'm English and Anglo-Irish relations haven't been so good but I do have respect for Irish people and certainly don't want them to become a minority in their land which is predicted to be soon and NOT coincidently, the government plan to swamp Eire with migrants. I urge Irish people to read upon the Kalergi plan written by the founder of the EU, Claudenhove-Kalergi - his ambition was to globalize and hybridize Europe - to replace its native cultures with multiculturalism. His ideas have come to life in many of our (European) capitals. Research and take action NOW!!! You're walking into genocide.

So true. The flood of unskilled arriving being given free everything will collapse the economy and social welfare system. Ireland will once again reap what our corrupt politicians sow - a boom and burst economy. They want cheap labour with high rents. Once again, it’s not going to end well and the future is more unpredictable than it ever was with the Irish politicians doing a solo run with the WEF/EU/UN and the WHO. The Irish people have had enough of their politicians open borders policies inviting undocumented migrants without background checks and passports in on top of an already beleaguered Irish workforce and are out on the streets protesting.

How's that? There's jobs here and there yes but crap wages with little chance of increasing due to cheap foreign labour, in other words if you're not happy with your button wages hit the road there's plenty more people will work for buttons, that's the problem which has made working class now head towards poorer and poorer in a slow decline, standards of living are declining rapidly most people cannot qualify for a mortgage now let alone hope to pay rent and with the governments intelligent thinking on more immigration where will we all live with a housing crisis, they're worsening the problem France has just tightened its rules on immigrant workers again not to be unfair to them but if wages decline for the French and the immigrants both suffer and the immigrants work for small money in the end, if another recession hits which there's talk of Irelands in big BIG TROUBLE THIS TIME

Yes getting a bad name in Australia too for scamming the elderly pretending to do work around peoples houses demanding half the money upfront and not returning.... police in Melbourne looking for lots of Irish tradesmen. Had to put out a public alert. Allow them a visa and they threaten and scam our elderly. A lot have over stayed there visas . It’s pretty bad.

@@judythomas2345 Hi Judy, I was in Melbourne in 1996 , enjoyed my time there, yes the Irish have a bad name but the Ausies no saints either. Been at the butt end of both. I got seriously assaulted 1 night outside a pub in Melbourne by bouncers who shouldn't have been in the country. Every country has good and bad.
