The Zelda character Nintendo forgot about

Princess Zelda is one of Nintendo's most famous characters, but we know very little about her family! Her father appears in games like Breath of the Wild, but it turns out ANOTHER family member made an appearance all the way back in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. So today we'll be talking about the Prince of Hyrule, Zelda's brother who Nintendo totally forgot about!

I think it can be argued that the Zelda from Skyward Sword wasn't a princess, she was just the daughter of an academy headmaster. Her descendants would eventually become the royal family, so she can be the first Zelda, while the one from Zelda 2 being the first Princess Zelda.

It should be mentioned that Zelda in Skyward Sword, is not actually a Princess. She is the daughter of the Headmaster of the Knight's Academy. And we learn that she is the re-incarnated motal form of the Goddess Hylia - a lesser goddess to the ones who created the land and the Triforce. Also whatever timeline Tears of the Kingdom is part of, has the founding monarchs called King Rauru and Queen Sonya - so that doesn't contradict either.

So here's the question to ask: If Rauru and Sonya were the founding monarchs, did they happen to have a daughter already, named Zelda, when she arrived to regenerate the Master Sword, or did they adopt her as her own? Was her brother even her brother by birth? That could suggest all kinds of timeline shenanigans, with another timeline split where she doesn't become the dragon, meaning the "Fallen Hero Timeline" doesn't necessarily follow after OOT at all. Otherwise, if there were 2 Zeldas at the beginning, it would seem one "slept" as a dragon, while the other slept under a curse for countless thousands of years... and has only been awakened in the Fallen Hero Timeline, which had OG LOZ Zelda AND the sleeping OG Princess Zelda... Which would mean all the other timelines still have a sleeping OG Princess Zelda outside of Hyrule in the North Castle. Ow, too much to think about. My head hurts now.

The Zelda timeline is intentionally vague. It's possible that the royal name tradition started in Zelda 2, but that princess just happened to be named after Skyward Sword Zelda without the tradition being made official. It's never said she explicitly WASN'T named after a previous generation.

That, plus technically Princess Zelda I is technically still the first Princess Zelda, even if she isn't the first Zelda ever, because SS Zelda isn't a princess. Hyrule wasn't founded yet, and neither was the Hyrulean royal family.

The prince saying that every princess shall be named Zelda doesn't have to contradict the timeline with other princesses named Zelda earlier. It is possible that before this moment at the end of the Defeat timeline and in the other timelines there were other princesses NOT named Zelda. Popular names tend come back every few generations, especially among royalty. This will still make this Zelda the 1st gen Zelda of that naming tradition.

TBF, if you treat the first Hyrule Warriors as cannon, the timeline of BoTW/ToTK makes a lot more sense. HW1 merges the timelines, and BoTW takes place in that merged timeline.

I think that makes it better, legends and history change over generations and generations, they become a story of legend. Legends are hardly ever true to their origin, so it's fitting for this series to have a messy timeline.

I think the explanation of "they're all so far apart in time (and sometimes in different timelines)" works pretty well to allow them to have some connection to previous games, so those events don't feel like they were for nothing, while also not forcing the writers to restrict themselves to the story and lore of previous games

I don‘t think the „timeline“ should be looked at like the timelines we are used to from other games. The clue is in the title, really - the „legend“ of zelda. Every game is a legend and how many legends do you know for sure transpired the way we know them as today? Santa Clause with his sled and raindeers for example used to be a kind old man, giving to the poor. King Arthur‘s story is genuinely a lot like Zelda with the amounts of contradictions every version holds - simply because every century people imagined him new, so much so that it‘s become hard to discern which one was the „real“ version of the story almost two thousand years later. And in Zeldas case, much more time has passed than just a couple thousand years, so it makes perfect sense that the stories might carry some sense of what happened, but the details, no matter how important they may seem, have been obscured and lost to time. Just how legends tend to do. I think it‘s oddly perfect for the timeline to be so imperfect. Not to mention the amount of intruiging theories we can make out of it, you can assume what you like and you‘ll never be right, nor wrong. Anybody can have their own version of how things and history transpired in Hyrule without harm and I think that‘s part of what makes Zelda so magical.

​@@majora5651 The timeline is perfect to be honest (aside from the Four Swords games which can theoretically take place anywhere without a direct sequel in between) so i don't understand why the fandom has such a hard time piece the games together considering how obviously clear it is regarding which game takes place after which game and how it all piles up together perfectly. There's nothing to say aside from the fact Nintendo has a set idea of how to make this games without thinking much about how it all makes sense within an extended timeline.

I still find it interesting that Zelda 2 has two princesses, and we don't know where the second one comes from. Thought I guess it kinda ties into TotK's story since it...uh...spoilers. The problem with some of the Zelda games is it spawned theories about Hyrule resetting every so often and no one remembering the old kingdoms. Which works for some entries, but not so much for others. I know people want the same for BotW and TotK, but I'm wholly convinced it takes place during a split sometime around Skyward Sword's era and sits in a 4th timeline. There's just way too many paradoxes with the other timelines for it to fit.

My pet theory is thinking of Hyrule itself as a sort of cosmic organism, that sort of "molts" and regenerates once in a while, losing some "memories" while keeping others. It's the only way I can explain the paradoxes and out-of-context references.

Personally I would argue that SS Zelda IS NOT A PRINCESS. This is because while Zelda and Link go on the found Hyrule Skylift itself doesn't seem to be a monarchy as Zeldas father is seen as a headmaster or principal of the knights academy of Skyloft. In fact I would argue the guy in the white robe with white hair is actually the ruler of Skyloft as the Headmaster refers to him multiple times as someone who makes the decisions such as delaying the race so Link can find his loftwing red (not sure if that's the loftwings official name or if Im just getting that from Erickson's gaming if Link could talk series). Imo what I think happened is Link and Zelda from SS married and became the rulers of Hyrule making them king and queen BUT the tradition of naming the female heirs Zelda didn't start till the unnamed prince degreed it in Zelda 2. Ie SS Zelda had a daughter but her name was Marin (Link and Marin fans go nuts sorry about spelling) not Zelda and it didnt become trad till Zelda 2.

I think its interesting that supplimentary material (mainly the Ran Maru manga) reveals that the prince WAS the wizard, as well as Ganon, having some sort of weird split personality (it's not explained very well to my knowledge), making Zelda's brother our first instance of Ganondorf before Ocarina of Time.

@MegaMegajennifer ya, it was certainly something to find out about, but Link's father in the 1989 manga was an Elf named Rune who had an affair with the previous (Blue haired) Zelda, making Link and the first games Zelda half siblings. The manga isn't cannon obviously, same with Zelda 2's brother being a prototype Ganondorf/Agahnim, but it's certainly something to think about, as I'm pretty sure the theory of Link & Zelda being siblings in LttP & OoT come FROM fans who read the original manga.

I don't think Skyward Sword really contradicts the whole "first" Zelda thing. She wasn't a princess, just the daughter of the school headmaster. So when Hyrule got a royal family, they could've named their daughter after "the goddess reborn" Adventure of Link Zelda would still be the first PRINCESS Zelda, but Skyward Sword Zelda lives before her. Just not as royalty But amazing video over all. I had no idea that Zelda had a brother!

Technically, each character in each LOZ had been forgotten, since they only appeared once, except those with official sequels, like Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. All characters with similar names to other games (Link, Zelda, Ganon, Impa) are not the same characters and each game is separated by at least a century with the endless cycle of rebirth.

Link only had a sister in one game and I don't see her getting a video. Also, Skyward Sword features the "earliest Link and Zelda to this day" not the very first, according to Aonuma, as that would prevent them making a game set before it. And Hyrule Historia + Zelda Encyclopedia are neat artbooks, but they're purely headcanon of the Shogakukan writers using their interpretations of what happens in the games mixed with some bits of info devs shared, so it can't be used as the final word, that's even stated in the books themselves.

Randomly just remembered that Legend of Neil (Zelda parody series about a man named Neil getting stuck in the world of the original NES Zelda game as Link) included Zelda's brother as a character. He was captain of a squad of soldiers fighting on the front lines in a war against Lynels, I think? And they named him Tyrelda.

Technically, Wind Waker Zelda does have her own name: Tetra. It was the name given to her by her mother. Tetra also dislikes being called Zelda, because in her mind, her name was always Tetra. It doesn't matter what the tradition of a lost legacy says her name should be.

Zelda's brother only appears in the Fallen Hero Timeline in the game "Adventures Of Link". Chronologically, in this timeline, "Adventures Of Link" is the last game before the 10,000 year time jump that leads to "Breath Of The Wild" in the Fallen Hero timeline (all 2 timelines eventually lead to BOTW). Also in the Fallen Hero timeline are the games "The Legend Of Zelda" (which features the same Link and Zelda as "Adventures Of Link"), "A Link To The Past", "Link’s Awakening", "Oracle Of The Seasons", "Oracle Of The Ages", "A Link Between Worlds", "Tri Force Heroes" (all 6 featuring the same Link and Zelda), and the events of "Ocarina Of Time" in the Fallen Hero timeline, all of which take place BEFORE "The Legend Of Zelda" and "Adventures Of Link". Then comes the games from before the 3-way split in time, "Fours Swords", "The Minish Cup", and "Skyward Sword" (all 3 features their own separate Link and Zelda, with "Skyward Sword" featuring the first to bear the names of Link and Zelda). The other games take place in either the Child timeline or the Adult timeline. After the first Link and Zelda in "Skyward Sword" defeated Demise and he cursed their bloodline, it became tradition to name daughters of their bloodline Zelda and sons Link. This was not a definite thing though, as Sonia is a descendant of "Skyward Sword" Zelda and Link but doesn't bear her name. This tradition came about in the hopes that as long as there was an 'age of Zelda' that the evil of Demise (manifested in the form of Ganondorf) would always fall before the Chosen Hero destined to serve the Zelda of that age. After what happened with Zelda's brother, he made it a royal decree that the first born daughter of the royal family MUST be named Zelda rather than it merely being tradition. Zelda's brother, however, does not exist in the Child and Adult timeline due to different events taking place (ie. the other games that didn't take place in the Fallen Hero timeline). With such massive gaps in time between the events of the different games, it's not a stretch to imagine that certain historical facts were lost or inaccurately recorded.

The King of Hyrule having a son that he doesn’t trust with the Triforce, so he hides it away from him and only tells his daughter about it’s whereabouts is such a compelling story. Future Zelda games really should lean into showing Zelda with siblings. Namely either having another deadbeat brother, or even telling us what'd happen if Zelda ends up with a younger sister, what'd she get named then?

Giving her more family members in general, really. (Siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.) The way they've done things so far, incarnations of a king and a princess are the only "royal family" (or any kind of Hylian nobility in general) we the players ever really hear about. AoL's manual had a prince and there might have been brief mentions of a queen once or twice somewhere else (OoT mentioned Zelda's mother briefly, I think?) but aside from that it's pretty much just the king and princess every time. That's the entire royal family in nearly every generation, apparently. (Which can lead to some bad questions if you try to rationalize the apparent unbroken line of succession for who knows how many generations. Because that makes one wonder if there's some sort of super-incestuous chain going on where father+daughter birth a son who will be the next king and then mother+son birth a daughter who will be the next princess, repeating that sequence infinitely.) And we tend to barely know too much about any staff serving in the castle either, with the biggest exception of a portrait in TWW showing flood-era Zelda with a bunch of people that could be ancestors of Tetra's pirate crew. Whole bunch of life in the castle being hinted at there. Aside from that portrait, we get a few one-offs such as Aghanim or Cole (shady advisors who deceive the king that they're supposed to be serving). I think a large part of it is just Nintendo being fans of using simplistic fairytale level storytelling style and structure for the core of the series. Everything operates on providing as little detail as possible that's not immediately and directly relevant to the current tale being told. If it doesn't help move the story along, it either belongs in the background or it belongs off-screen. They're not likely to throw things in just for the worldbuilding (although to be fair BotW and TotK have been much better about that than most previous games).

Hey, this might be false but in the french Fandom Zelda wiki, the Prince Of Hyrule is called "Hyro", I didn't find any sources though, I checked in the English page which did not call him "Hyro", Even the Bing AI told me that he was called Hyro. The weird thing his that the entire bing answer was in English exept for "Prince d"Hyrule" which is Prince of Hyrule, so I don't really think that Hyro is a real name, unless there is a source that is name is "Hyro" and that I couldn't find.

The thing is the whole downfall timeline doesn't fit in a world where skyward sword and oot happened. For example It's said the sages forged the master sword for a future son of hylian knights. And oot is a major retcon on the imprisoning war as it was originally told to us. But interestingly enough in the leadup to Tears of the kingdom Ayonuma said that Skyward sword isn't always the beginning of the timeline ignoring the artwork that first king could be Raru (the twins presumably being born off screen prior to their mothers death - with Zelda I being named after their "distant relative"

If I recall correctly, that idea comes from a line which the English localization team chose to write as "Zelda is your..." Saw that a while back on a page that had gone through the manual and in-game text for LttP comparing the original Japanese text and how the translators altered it for the US release. Don't have a link saved to check it again now though.

🤔 From what I understand, "Skyward Sword" Zelda is the "First Zelda." But in "Zelda II the adventure of Link", this Zelda is the "First Princess Zelda" hence the whole "Princess Zelda I ". 7:41 This is probably because the Zelda from Skyward Sword wasn't technically royalty.

I *hate* the concept of the zelda timeline. Im an old. I played the first Zelda as a 7 year old. Ive played every single one since. Back before they decided to shoehorn in a timeline (except for in obvious sequels), it was just assumed that the games were just stories, or like different dimensions where in every one Ganon would rise to try to take over Hyrule and a version of Link would stop him. There doesnt need to be a timeline for everything!

I started with the original NES game as a kid as well, but there's always been some sort of loose sequence for them in the marketing from what I was aware of growing up. (Although the word loose here can be emphasized. They left the connections between games quite vague. Nintendo likes simplistic "fairy tale" styled storytelling with this series, which means that they haven't done much worldbuilding. We don't usually see any details that aren't immediately and directly relevant to the current adventure.) They presented AoL as the direct sequel to LoZ and then they presented LttP as a prequel to them both and then they presented LA as the direct sequel to LttP and then they presented OoT as another prequel to the series and then they presented MM as the direct sequel to OoT. So by that point it was fairly simple to say OoT -> MM -> LttP -> LA -> LoZ -> AoL. (Many things were left up to imagination on a closer inspection. But it's what they had given us so far at that time.) Where things got weird for a bit was with the releases of TWW and TP and fans fighting over whether or not Nintendo actually intended certain things to be on different branches of a split in the timeline. We also got some oddball releases around this time that felt more disconnected than usual. Harder to slip into a placement. There were the Capcom produced Oracles games. And there was the Four Swords side game within the GBA rerelease of LttP, followed by the releases of TMC and FSA. Hyrule Historia cleared up the "is there a split?" question but also threw split timeline fans off balance with the introduction of a third branch. Almost nobody expected that one. We thought the intention was for LttP onwards to follow after TP and FSA. And... things are kinda weird again now since BotW's release. Nintendo played it vague with what they could intend for BotW's placement but the idea they want us to take away from it is that in the extremely long term all three branches of the timeline go through variations of similar events as each other and the differences in the timing and details become so irrelevant thousands upon thousands of years into the future that it all blends together in the legends / myths and all three branches ultimately lead to some version of an inevitable future. They all have BotW, or something indistinguishably similar to it, tacked on at the end. Soft reboot. The previous games "happened" but their relevance to anything is effectively zero and they might not even be accurate accounts of whatever may actually be buried in the history. I guess with TotK the intention even goes so far as to propose that the kingdom of Hyrule known to us from previous games (both the original Hyrule and the post-flood New Hyrule) fell and had their names forgotten in the myths so that Rauru and Sonia establishing a new kingdom with that name believed their kingdom to be the first and only kingdom with that name. People like yourself who disliked having timelines and don't want to think about it get to have their "told you so" moment. Because within the Hyrule currently being depicted the older games are at best just stories that people within this Hyrule might be telling each other about mythical figures known only through oral tradition storytelling.

Skyward Sword doesn’t really contradict Zelda 2 and it’s not uncommon to name a child after a relative or an ancestor. When the brother created that law/tradition, that was solely for the Fallen Timeline’s Princess Zeldas. Every other Zelda in the other timelines and before Zelda 2 don’t follow this for obvious reasons, including Skyward Sword. Plus, gotta remember that Skyward Sword was before Hyrule’s kingdom was ever erected so there was no royal family. And as with BotW and TotK, there was an interview saying the kingdom being destroyed and refounded is an actual possibility. Make of that what you will.

There's a fourth hidden timeline (or possibly a continuation of the fallen hero timeline), where Zelda 2 and The cartoon television series exist. Link IS a hero, but he's a real cocky bastard too. He's the Anti-Hero in that sense. He's got humanities best interests at heart, but he doesn't do it in the noblest of terms like most Link's. He wants something out of it.
