Notice how many hippos, gorillas, and rats are near the bottom? How many cats and wolves are rated highly? It's not coincidence, when there's only like 4 personality types visuals count for _a lot_ . I think Coco and Tangy are a little ugly, but they're unique in a fun way - Coco being a Gyroid and Tangy being a tasty fruit. Lucky is probably my favorite villager in the towns I've actually had (him, Peanut, Olivia, and Static all way up there). Ankha and Lucky have very _striking_ appearances, risky designs that pay off in spades.

Fun fact about ganguro, it's also based on mountain spirits that represent hypothermia, which are usually depicted with the darkened skin and inflated lips of its victims. Hence the name "Fever"

It's really tragic how controversial the whole thing can be because on one hand, Japan wouldn't know about the blackface minstrel shows designed to mock black people and thus why it's so offensive, but on the other hand, various animes showed they don't have much respect for black culture either way as black characters are often depicted as goofy, loud and annoying, having the main character often make comments on how annoying they are as if that's the joke. It kind of got better over the years, but the deliberate censorship of black culture in stuff imported to Japan (removing Disco from Ratchet and Clank, replacing it with techno) makes it feel very much like the ganguro might just as much have been mocking blacks by pretending to be them as a "counter culture" thing. Making us appear "wild and radical". Them darkening their skin to get that effect isn't necessary to be a counter culture and would only serve to make the people dislike black culture even more, when that's not how we are. Thus why it's still offensive to this day. BUT as I said, Japan has gotten better with depicting black characters more respectfully, but unfortunately, the culture that surrounds anime still pushes for the racism to thrive as it appeals to generally sheltered nerds who see it as a way to destroy what they personally find "annoying".

@@MarioMastar Since I don't watch much anime, are those black characters always black in the original Japanese, or usually only in the English localizations? Since I at least know that in the very first Persona on PS1, Masao Inaba, who was named Mark for the original PS1 English release and is himself rather annoying, was actually purely Japanese in the Japanese version just like everyone else, but was made black for the English release. Plus it may also be simply from loud, enthusiastic, and usually annoying being a Japanese stereotype of Americans in general regardless of skin color; like Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury, and I think Lieutenant Surge is also usually rather loud. The only non-American black character I remember having ever seen in purely Japanese media is Yasuke, though; the real-life African man who came to serve Oda Nobunaga. I at least know that Yasuke is very much celebrated and a point of intrigue for the Japanese people especially from his strength and tall stature. Either way, though, with Japan still being rather cynical toward anything not originally from Japan, it is unfortunately not much of a surprise that their media can be rather disrespectful to others. No matter what the case is, I would still love to see more people in general respect those who are different regardless of nationality, skin color, or any other difference.

One of the reasons why my anime intake has decreased by literally 99% in the last few years is because I began to realize how indirectly racist a good portion of it is.(A lot of it is also just problematic in general, but that's a discussion for another time.) You don't notice it when you're younger, but after a while you do. The part of your comment I didn't agree with is that I think a lot of Japanese people do realize that blackface is problematic, they just don't care? Every few years there's a controversy about something blackface or race related happening in Japan big enough for me to hear about. It happens enough for people to know by now. The 'culture' of anime is part of it, but I also think a lot of people(from all countries, of all races) are just racist as hell towards black people. It's so ingrained in society that most people don't realize it. Everything else you said was spot on imo.

@@Daniel_Coffman Normally they are black from the beginning, or at least that is what I have seen over the years as a european anime and manga fan. There have even been cases like the US 4kids (who don‘t exists anymore) version of one piece, who edited an originally poc background character to be white 💀 (To be fair he already had kiiinda racist vibes to him from the start with his big lips and big eyes etc. (The original scene was from 1999). But we are talking about a character who never even appeared in the manga and had no voice lines or anything, but they apparently felt the need to change his skintone for the US release, idk what their reason was for this weird change) But also I want to add characters who could pass as white bc of their light skintone, but have more african/ african-asian features like very curly black hair etc such as Usopp (also one piece). He was played by a poc actor in the recent netflix liveaction series, and while the actor had a deeper skintone than the character, it fit the character way more since he was poc from the beginning in the sense of his features, but while being light-skinned? If you know what I mean. So in the end I personally only heard from characters who already were black in the original, or were intended to be black but weirdly with a lighter skin tone, probably because of Japan‘s (or almost all of Asia‘s) obession with very light skin… They have improoved a bit since then, but still need to do better when it comes to black and poc characters. And women and girls. And queer people. 🙃 sigh…

I was sweating, man. I was waiting for Rosie's name to come up and by the time we got to #1 I was like wow she's not gonna be in the top 25??? She was one of my first villagers in Animal Crossing for the GCN and I fell in love with her. She's been my favorite ever since for purely nostalgic reasons. Sasha is a close runner up from the modern lineup. Words cannot express how excited I was when she was one of the first villagers I got in the latest game.

Yeah I love Rosie too but I think your worry is why I feel the list is a bit "biased" (mathematically, not personally). The random nature of the choices would mean characters who appeared more favorably would be picked more, but I just don't hear people talk about Rosie in particular compared to other really popular animals like Marshal. Definitely top 10, maybe even top 3, but what really throws me off is Tangy being number 2.....I never hear people talk about Tangy....EVER. I think she's cute too, but I think people picked her because she looks like an orange and not particularly because she's everyone's "Favorite".

With hundreds of villagers, 1 million votes is much easier to come by, especially with multiple quick rounds of this or that. I’m fairly certain it’s one million VOTES and not VOTERS as she said she had to remove 400,000 fake votes… That one person generated. So clearly the sample size isn’t HUGE. I don’t know if I consider Tom Scott’s entirely accurate either but he had more traffic on his, at least.

I would love to see a follow up to this video covering more of the statistics from this survey. Like what are the most popular species or personality types in the series? We clearly see just from this list that positive personalities on dogs and cats take up much of the top, while negative personalities on rhinos, hippos, and gorillas are at the bottom. How would a species like the octopus with fewer but seemingly well-liked villagers stack up against the popular dogs and cats with their larger numbers? P.S. my favorites are Zucker and Roald. Ooohhhh what an interesting topic! You would probably first think of an uglier looking villager but most of them actually are loved by many people because they are uglier

There's a lot of bias in the results (mathematic bias, not personal bias), as given you're given a random choice of 2 villagers and have to pick one over the other, there's a chance that some villagers simply didn't appear often at all, or appeared with match ups that were obviously going to make them lose or push others higher. (like if out of 100 times Jane showed up, 70 times she was paired with Audie or Marshall and only 30 times she was paired with more middle of the road villagers, but only like 2 times was she paired with "uglier" villagers like Dobie or Harry, then it'd seem like she was only liked 2-5/100 times while Audie and Marshall were wildly popular. So while it seemed like the curve would fit a proper line, there's enough error where the Gorillas simply were overlooked because they got unlucky. Similarly at the top, I get Rosie's really cute and easily top 10, but seeing her as number 1 is interesting. As Margie wasn't even top 25 and she was also the main protagonist in the movie, and Fang outshined Whitney by several votes but he only appeared in City Folk and on. Personally as I mentioned elsewhere, a simple "Star, check, empty, minus, and X" system would give more accurate results. check and minus are + and - 1 respectively. Star and X are "Favorite and least favorite" which would be weighted to show which characters were truly actual favorites and not just "liked by the most people", as well as true least favorites and not just "disliked". The list would probably look similar, but you'll get far more accurate results for the extreme cases. Marshal not being top 10 is odd given people gave LOTs of money for Marshall, and i didn't see the other male cat with the hipster glasses who's name escapes me that people dove for as well. As well while some of them are striking like Lucky or Tangy, I don't really imagine they're that many people's "Favorite" as much as a "nice to have" or "noteworthy". Meaning people probably only picked them because they remembered them or they stood out, rather than being a particular favorite. As you can see this fascinates me as well though! Very interesting video!

I'm glad we still have villagers we can dislike. It may not be because of meanness or personality anymore (instead it's just because of shallow looks), but the general idea of having unappealing villagers as well as appealing ones is realistic. If they were all aesthetic, then it would remove all the charm from the game imo. I became a fan of Animal Crossing because it's supposed to be a village _roleplay_ game. Even if Nintendo wants to slowly turn it into an aesthetic designer game instead by forcing everything to be all "cute" and "tame", I'll always think of the intentions Nintendo had at the start and what was clearly shown to be in Lets Go To The City and before.

Back in 2001 Nintendo held a villager popularity poll in the N64 game and its GC port soon after. The GC ones even came with special passwords with a gift from that character, something that was implemented in the American version but seemingly never used. People wrote in letters, and they're still up on Nintendo's site- it's really interesting to see people supporting their favorite villagers all the way back then! Though the one I found the funniest was someone who compared the lion Aziz to prime minister Junichiro Koizumi… because they're right.

What’s super funny is I actually love Limberg, and Harry bc when I first played animal crossing, it was City Folk and they were my very first villagers who I met and they’re so nostalgic for me! Harry always called my siblings and I Beach Bums and it always made us laugh. I can understand why they’re unpopular to others, but I personally love them so much. I think the major flaw is that it's always random and the character will gain a loss whenever it loses. If there's a more popular character paired with it, it will lose, for example and the more likeable characters will always win. This might be a lot more inefficient but this could have instead been a 15 to 30 minute long questionnaie of randomly arranged set of villagers. It sorts based on who you said you liked more, but it will take into account ranking, then it takes the average ranking of all the villagers into account when tallying their score rather than a win/loss ratio.

I’m a little surprised about Keaton being in the bottom 25, and Raymond not being in the top 25 (I thought for sure he’d be top 10 at least). Limberg used to be my least favorite, but he’s grown on me. When I found out you had to have a cranky on your island for the emotes, and realized oh no I don’t have one, I went through my amiibo cards and picked the villager I thought I’d have the easiest time kicking out later (replaced him with Rosie). After spending time with him to get him to give me all his emotes, I like him now. Still kicked him out for Rosie though

This seems like visuals were THE determining factor, outside of some fan-favorites. This seems especially true at the bottom, where you see a lot of apes and hippos with weird eyes, bad makeup, and awful hair, facial or otherwise. I would suggest that the personalities these characters have say more about the designers' (and perhaps the public's) biases towards certain looks. After all, the respondants flipping through hundreds of pairings were not interacting with these characters. They were just taking a second or two to quickly compare what they saw.

For me, Chow will ALWAYS be my least favorite villager. Reason being, I was BFFs with Melba back in Wild World. She was my favorite. The bottom tier villagers tend to hit too close to home and very caricature meets fursona. The top tier are just aesthetically pleasing and aren't awful. Rosie and Apollo were in my pocket camp, Marshall is so adorable.
