Many thanks! Really appreciate the clear explanation with diagrams. I've only received my H2n today and this has been the most helpful introduction to the stereo modes yet!

Since in a M/S recording the Side channel (right) should be 90 degrees off, and the M/S reocrdings from the H2n seem to be in phase, I wonder if the Zoom H2n decodes the M/S to stereo onboard, instead of providing a raw M/S recording? EDIT: Ah, looks like by tweaking the M/S mid/side level options far enough you can record in M/S Raw mode. Cool!

Hello Trace, and thank you for the layman's explanation the the pickup patterns. What is driving me nuts is that there isn't a clear indication of what constitutes the front and rear of the microphone. While its generally accepted that the front is the display side, looking at the pattern adjustment knob indicates that the microphone nulls are pointed in the direction of the display side - which would make that the back of the mic. That seems odd because how can you do critical self-recordings if you cannot see the display? Every microphone from a cheap Tascam TM-80 to a Neumann U-48 correctly indicates the directionality of the microphone by the graphics on the body. The manual shows the X/Y pickup lobe towards the display side. If that is true then the graphics on the selector are reversed from what they should be. The M/S graphic shows the mid pickup lobe off the opposite (non display) side. The graphic on the selector matches that. The live graphics for adjusting the M/S ratio also indicates that the lobe is away from the display and the null is toward the display. Having just got this recorder and have little experience with it, it would appear that the X/Y pickup is towards the display and the other modes are on the non-display side. You demos did not show you speaking into the recorder. I'm guessing you were on the display side? Thanks Trace.

Let me see if I didn't get confused: The display was all the time to you or other side? If I put the to XY I must to have the display to me and MS the display to opposite direction? Thx for the great video.
@CaneMajor6 жыл бұрын
The XY side is the display side. It's the opposite of the H2.

Good explanation. However, it wasn't clear if you turned the H2N around through 180 degrees when recording first in the XY and afterwards in the MS configurations. That is, were you facing and speaking into the front of the unit when in XY, and facing and speaking into the back of the unit when in MS. Thanks

I have a question, which the best mode for my project as a teacher teaching ?
@CaneMajor11 жыл бұрын
The X/Y configuration does better far away but the mid side (with the side mics turned off) does better close up, within 1 meter from your face.

Hi CaneMajor, so for the solist concert better is MS on H2n, but when concert is for orchestra better is XY? :)

Hello, i m ovi from Bangladesh, i want record hindu harinaan kirtan, is this mic. Is best for me? When kirtaniyas doing there perform in a Stage they follow a circle. They perform in all side. Centre is free for god picture / Throne,If it's good then where do I put it? please explain the backup time & sound quality?
@somberone82594 жыл бұрын
This is late but, you can look for spatial audio videos with the h2n, you can set it so it records audio all around itself, so if they are going around 360 you could put it in the middle of the circle on the 2 or 4 channel modes where all the microphone configurations included in the recorder work together to capture audio all around it. And I can tell you that it sounds great if you get your settings correct, I dont know about back up though

Thank you, very informative test recording overview. I found another video where the H2n was opened, and turns out it actually has only 4 capsules. The Side mic in the M/S pair is apparently a figure-of-8 to record the side signal. That video is here: v=MVjubqFlJHM
