I'll admit I'm a bit hyped up, but I genuinely stand by my statement. I love what the band is doing, I don't see many others out their going against the grain while still maintaining a pop signature. They could've released a second album similar to their first with the same sound generally just changed up a bit but they decided to risk this change for the sake of art and spreading a message to our culture and getting in touch with young people who have flocked into this fandom and in a way made it a bit shallow. Sexualizing Matty and the other band members and making them their next 'boy band' to get obsessed with over tumblr then leave them for the next best. The more attractive singer. He was mocking himself, mocking the celebrity obsessed culture, and mocking those who so easily buy into this image of fame and shell out loads of money to perfect their own image with material items they dont need just so they can photograph themselves to no end and bombard facebook with their face in different outfits and hair/makeup. All so shallow. The things people will say about celebrities online makes me feel uncomfortable and I'm not even the one taking the hit. Writing what basically comes down to erotic fanfiction with a celebrity and character most likely similiar to themselves. Devoting tumblr accounts to a stars body part (I remember seeing a blog only of Harry Styles hands). I'm sick of it and most of us don't get the oppurtunity of fame to spread a message so yes, I'm hyped up on this new change because it's a "fuck you" to our culture. To record labels just trying to make money and not caring about the art. Mainstream music has become mellow in a way where everyone just kind of follows the image they create and make music about relationships and partying or whatever (which is fine) but The 1975 are risking their career on this second album and daring to defy being boxed into a corner genre of music pleasant sounding but with no deeper thought. Everyone knows the second album release is often a make or break for new artists, but they stayed true to themselves and spreading a message. I'm fucking proud of them, dude. I'm really fucking proud. I hope this inspires more artists to break out of the money making machine and say something that might make people uncomfortable and open their minds even a little.
