I've worked with pH for a long time in an industrial setting, and also as a home grower. Now I work at a grow supply store. I can honestly say that there are more problems created by incorrect pH readings and adjustments than by never checking pH. I'm not saying don't check it, but I am saying don't check it with a cheap pen type meter. They are very often inaccurate and easily prone to drift. I had one guy come in for a second bottle of concentrated pH down in a couple of months. I asked how many plants he had and he said 4, but they don't look too good. His 20 dollar pen was lying and he had never calibrated it. The test drops Scotty suggests can be trusted by people that are not color blind. The yellowish test strips on a roll are garbage. Non-bleeding strips like ColorpHast are very good and can be used a few times each. Bluelab makes a good pen-type meter. The tip must be kept moist with storage solution in the cap. I use a lab grade meter with a glass bulb tip like the Bluelab has. pH meters need to be calibrated fairly often. If you are lazy, you can just stick it in pH7 calibration solution (always use fresh) and make sure it says 7. Good to go. If a meter has a problem calibrating, either the solution is contaminated, or the reference junction is clogged or dried out. A properly cared for pH meter lasts for a long time. They calibrate quickly when new, and slowly take longer and longer as the probe ages. As I said, more problems are created by incorrect readings than by not reading at all. My .02.
@UbiquitousRompАй бұрын
Even blu labs pens are unreliable. Best option is to have a couple of cheaper pens to check against each other. when you get a new one. re calibrate them all, with the packets. And then you have 3 working pens for half the price of the Blu labs that also fail regularly Spend the money saved on a good EC meter
@pursaveer9027Ай бұрын
@@UbiquitousRomp I think the complaints about Bluelab pH meters are more due to improper storage and lack of calibration than anything else. I calibrate pH stuff for the customers and the bulb is almost always dry when they bring them in. Bluelab has a good warranty. I would say about half our customers don't know they have to calibrate. The packets are single use. I would suggest that if somebody wants to use cheap pH pens, they also buy a bottle of pH7 and pH4 calibration solutions- and a small bottle of storage solution. Rather than checking against each other, you can check against a known standard. pH meters don't stay calibrated- they drift. Then I would use the money saved to buy a Bluelab truncheon EC meter ;) It has 3 scales, including EC. The PPM scales can be misleading. People seem to like Hanna pH pens too. I have a Hanna Conmet 2 conductivity meter that is 30 years old and still works. Of course, I calibrate it with EC 2.77mS. My lab grade pH meter (IQ Scientific) has the ability to replace the probe when it gets slow and unresponsive. Amazon has replacement probes.

If you are doing a 'living soil' grow, you typically do not water until run off. If you keep using PH up/down, it will build up in the soil and cause you a lot of problems. I found that if i have to use PH down, after a few weeks i don't have to add it anymore because there is enough of it already in the soil.
@StanMNdirtАй бұрын
We have to approach most of these PH discussions knowing they don’t apply to our grow style. My RO well water was at 6.41 all summer and dropped to 6.1 during our dry fall. It will likely come up closer to 6.5 as we are getting more moisture. Well water fluctuates a little bit like that but not enough that it affects my plants. It’s great when our grow routine just works and we don’t feel like we have to chase numbers or change anything.

I hand water. General rule of thumb for me has been sixteen ounces water per gallon of soil. Three gallon 48 ounces, five gallons 80 ounces. I pickup the fabric pots and can tell when they need water. I have a system down with a specific brand of soil and that is my base line. It’s not very often that I have to stray from it. Probably the trickiest as far as watering is starting Autoflower seeds in three gallon bags. That can be a bit tricky but I have a good feel for it. Mine is a small craft grow for quality flower. No extracts or anything that uses large quantities of flower.

Try using apple cider vinegar as your pH down. 1/2 to 1 cap per gal depending on your water pH at the start. My water out of the tap is 7.2. I use a cap per gal. It also helps to break down calcium from bone meals and things like egg shells.

I had good first grow this year and have never checked the pH. I bought a couple bags of soil from Costco and Home Depot and made two huge piles of compost. I add about 1/3 mostly finished compost to the dirt and occasionally top dress with some fresh compost. Used mostly organic fertilizers mostly like blood meal and bone meal. Both plants were huge and super healthy. Never had a problem maybe it was beginners luck, but I think the compost is what really helps keep the soil in check. I put everything in the compost, grass clippings, leaves, chopped up weeds and kitchen scraps from fruits and vegetables to egg shells and some coffee grinds but not a lot of coffee grinds. I have an old mulching mower with a bag. I drop it down on big piles of vegetation and weeds and leaves and stuff and it chops it up and bags it. Then I just dumped all of that into the compost pile. Now I have a big wood chipper and I'm composting the fine chips from that and adding other materials to it as well. I think having a big variety in your compost makes it better. I think using good compost makes living soil. One of the plants went in the ground and I got over a pound of big dank buds out of it. I dug a huge hole and removed all of the existing dirt which was very poor, I replaced it with compost and store-bought Kellogg raised gardens soil. I waited way too long to put it into the ground though or it would have been much bigger. I also have a rain barrel and I use that for watering. The rainwater probably has a good pH as well. I think keeping things natural and not doing too much of one thing is a safe way to go. I also avoid the temptation to water too much. I was watering pretty heavy but not watering very often, definitely not every day. It seemed to work pretty well. My leaves were very dark green with no burning or yellowing.

i used a cheep tester so i dont trust it 100% but my tap water tested 6.5 and its hard water has a lot of calsiam in it builds up on ever thing

well developed soil between 5.5 and 7 will work fine with light top feeding and some compost tea feeding............. don;t fight it.

I thought you didn’t need to ph when growing organically, this confused me now
@benjammin1212Ай бұрын
Depends on the size of your pot, it really needs to be large enough so the microbes can sort out the ph...however, I still check the ph in my organic grows, I use plagron organic nutes, on the bottle it's says that you should ideally check the ph to keep it in range..

Lemon juice is a natural PH DOWN 💚✌🏼

That can cause serious issues… microbe 😵

Not good
@DysonFraudyАй бұрын
i use lemon juice every watering. I wait and put it in just before feeding and its free from my tree. The ph down is phos. acid and will bind up calcium and suck during the end when you want to finish. I just use catalyst, lemon juice and filtered water. smells fantastic too. Oh and its organic not synthetic.
@jimmyjames5175Ай бұрын
@@DysonFraudy dude we’re trying ti give u advice. If you’re growing organically goof chance that keels the microbial activity u got going on. You’d be better off just not phing your water at all than using lemon juice.
@growersmindsetАй бұрын
@@jimmyjames5175it doesn't kill microbes... edit: not at that concentration.

How do you test run off bottom feeding?
@tingtong6865Ай бұрын
after your feeding (around 30min later), you sqisch your substrate a bit to get some run off to collect...
@HinataSasaki60Ай бұрын
@tingtong6865 going to use auto water from AC. and grow dots no run off. Constantly feeding from bottom. Recharge only thing going in top once a week. Test that run off?
@GregDunne-zf2epАй бұрын
I just use rain water simple

just do the work

I have not heard anyone recommend to PH your water based on the runoff PH. I disagree with that recommendation.

Rain water, add nutes, feed. Easy peasy no meters ever

If this hasn’t been said yet; DO NOT GO CHEAP with one of those Chinese Amazon PH Pens. Go with Apera or Blue Labs!
