The deposit should be a reasonable amount, and justifiable. You cannot make a profit from a deposit and you should be able to detail the costs. Timewasters are horrible and should be made to pay for effecting your business.

What I am thinking is that you split the stock into prepped and not, if someone is interested in unprepared vehicle you can give them first refusal when prepped but you can't talk pricing / agree the deal yet because you don't know your costs until it has been prepped. When it is ready, you call them and give them first refusal but you don't take deposits, they need to get down to you before it sells. All the deals are then on the spot. No more getting messed around. No more customisation unless the buyer pays in advance.

I'd not have made that aygo non standard mate, people will think it's had a crash now and been built up from parts, you know the score bud, I think you'd have been buying it back in the future. Stop bending over backwards for people, most aren't worth it mate. Has a guy on today, mint little fiesta, 2 owners, fsh, low miles, 995,they turn up in a 24 plate volvo, they're pulling a face looking at this fiesta, I gave em 2 mins and brought the viewing to a close. The way your aygo people were moaning it wasn't going to happen. Tbh you should have been quick on your feet and gave them some story of the owner giving up driving and parking the car up, saying I don't know is a red flag to them, you've got to have an answer to everything.

I've got a book, called, 'never had a spanner on her' it's about a classic car trader, ethos is the same, only had routine maintenance, nothing out of the ordinary, all questions answered. When I watched last episode i was surprised you agreed to making those modifications to the car. Insurance is so hot on "modifications", i would have refused completely. Make sure to tell the new buyer of the modifications. Even having the wrong colour panel such as a fender/wing is classed as a modification.

I'd like to chime in on my personal experience. I bought a car in August. I always look at the MOT history before i buy. It has some fails for worn tyres and one fail for a hole in the flexi part of the exhaust, which were subsequently passed (failed and passed in 2019). I bought the car and took it to an independent BMW garage to have all drive train fluids changed - gearbox, transfer case and both diffs. The technician doing the work took a picture of the flexi part of the exhaust with a MASSIVE hole in it the same part that had failed in 2019. Turns out it wasnt fixed - not with the state of it via photograph. You couldnt hear the exhaust blowing because of the heat shield and under trays stifling it. Dealer sorted it ASAP. It had passed every MOT since the initial failure in 2019. So more than one MOT tester had missed it aswell as the dealer and myself.

You might've dodged a bullet, having lost the sale of the Aygo to those people, but it was a bit smart of them to ask you to get rid of the red accents/trims & then decide to pull out of the deal!! Now, because you're left with a car that doesn't look 100% completely original in looks, you might find it difficult (as you alluded to) to sell the car, WITHOUT the red trims/accents.
