It's fantastic to preserve old recordings. Historical recordings from a different era.

HURRAY! I had assumed this was an Al Bowlly hit and was hoping someone had recorded it in 1931, what luck it was the talent of Rudy Vallee! SWELL :)

An amazing restoration. Todays technology is hard to believe sometime. And it still retains that charm that music from that era had. Late 20's-Early 30's arrangements just had a certain sound and in all likelihood the tech of that day had something to do with it as well.

This day and age we're living This cause for apprehension This speed and new invention And things like third dimension Yet we get a trifle weary With Mr. Einstein's Theory For we must get down to earth at time Relax, relieve the tension . No matter what the progress of what may have improved, The simple facts of life are such, they cannot be removed . You must remember this A kiss is still a kiss A sigh is just a sigh The fundamental things apply as time goes by . And when two lovers woo They still say "I love you" On that you can rely No matter what the future brings, as time goes by . Moonlight and love songs never out of date Hearts full of passion, jealousy, and hate Woman needs man, and man must have his mate That no one can deny . It's still the same old story A fight for love and glory A case of do or die The world will always welcome lovers as time goes by

The quality of this '78 recording is exquisite ! Rudy's voice - so clear... his bell-tone lilting, floats so easily... A complete contrast to the irrespresable charming, brashness of Al Jolson - such a excellent counterpart to Mr. Valee's approach ! But both, aboslute timeless treasures :))

@ZooxMaze

@@vivianfigueredo6111 Well-uh, as resonant and melodious as Mr. Vallee may be I'm afraid I have to give the nod to, Bing as far as "the first crooner" accolades go. I wouldn't exactly call this recording crooning, per say - although it's a fine line, I do admit. I think, crooning often hints at a certain amount of mischievous intentions... while Rudy's vocal stylings are tailored within a more innocent premise, to my ears. Aside from that, it was also Bing who jumped on the proverbial (and, literal) bandwagon thanks to the introduction of microphones. Microphones complimented and made possible such subtle innuendos. Rudy's tones are well-rounded and delicate, however, he's a sweet singer in more of a traditional sense. Romantic, yes - but, that's not necessarily the same thing, in my opinion.

'These words will never age. This song rings true, the same. On this, I tell no lie...the rhyme it brings to you and I, as 3 minutes and 31 seconds rolls right by...And Rudy's voice will stay as sweet, as time goes by!'😁 Love this tune SO much. My thanks for posting!😚

I play this song on the piano and I've been trying to find a version that I can listen to where I could hear the verse and then the chorus cause most people started out with the chorus and you don't ever really hear the verse. I've always played it with the verse 1st And then the chorus which makes a lot more sense and the verses are really nice especially music wise.

WOW. Now I truly have heard *everything*. Everything is just right in this arrangement, including the hurry-up release in the instrumental! As fate seems to have ordained it, this is only the second rendering of the verse I have heard. Only a short time ago, Natalie Cole got the jump on Mr. Vallee. Thanks for the wonderful serendipity.

The really striking thing about these pre-1940 songs is how many of them have an introductory verse (in this case: "this day and age we're living in...") before the main verse ("you must remember this..."). Such verses were *always* excised from later versions, and all pop music pretty much stopped having such introductions after the late 1930s. Songs fell into a rigid verse/verse/chorus/verse pattern moving forward. Does anyone know why?
@keegster7167
@keegster7167 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm curious about this too! But in what other songs have you found this sort of introduction?
@joshn938
@joshn938 Жыл бұрын
I think I may have an inkling. I believe it derives from two separate sources: the first being that many songs of this period were tied into movies and Broadway shows, so many songs with an "introduction" may have been part of a play originally. Perhaps not this particular tune, but it can explain some of the influence and say, setting context for the song. The second being that there was an element of vaudeville into the 1920s and lasting into the late 30s. When vaudeville fell out of favor during WWII, so did popular music and the structure of songs changed in postwar America, especially with the proliferation of Rock and Roll in the 1950s.

@@keegster7167 Go find the early 30s movie clip of Crosby singing Pennies from Heaven. T's here on YT. I may change your understanding of the song. Then there's the "lost intro" to Fly Me To the Moon. It too is beautiful. It too is here on YT. I think Toney Bennet does it. There more like it but this is a good start.

"Third dimension" How strange! The third dimension is pretty ordinary. The shocking and disturbing implication of the theory of relativity is the use of the fourth dimension. I wonder why the song's introduction was written in this way? I heard this song on the radio on a public radio program about American popular song. Is that episode, the intro was modified to use the term fourth dimension instead, which makes them more sense to me.
