This most-famous British recording of the WW2 era featured a simple novachord accompaniment to the plaintive vocal by 22 year-old Vera and contributed to her reputation as “the Forces’ Sweetheart” during the war years. It was the first of several recorded versions that she made over the decades, but the most commonly-heard one (with full orchestra and chorus) was released in the early 1950s (listen here: • 1953 HITS ARCHIVE: We’... )
The original 78rpm single was issued on (UK) London F-7268 - We’ll Meet Again (Ross Parker-Hughie Charles) by Vera Lynn, with Arthur Young on the Novachord, recorded September 28, 1939

I was a kid at the Disney World park MGM Studios, which is now Hollywood Studios when I learned of this song. I was in love for Tower of Terror & I loved it so much, it didn’t creep me out even though it was supposed to with the echos & ambiance. I fell in love with the song, & was deeply saddened to learn of Miss Vera’s death. My family & I actually rode Tower of Terror in her honor in a way lol. 2 days after my birthday last year, I lost my baby doggie. He & I were like 2 peas in a pod. If you saw me, you’d know he was 1 step behind. That baby was stuck on me like glue. He was there for me when I felt like no one was around. He listened to me get angry, cry, laugh, freak out, & love me just the same. Never judged me of course etc. he was literally my baby. It was traumatic the way he left us. He passed in my arms and I’ll never forget feeling him pass. I still feel guilty. I miss him. So much. I miss him everyday. Sometimes I’ll cry when I wake up because he was always next to me, but I’ll know we’ll meet again. Some sunny day.

The haunting Novachord wasn’t manufactured until 1939. However, this could well be the first recording featuring the instrument. The ‘intermission’ during Gone With The Wind features the Novachord. This recording may have pipped this ‘78’ to the title. I had the privilege of fitting some vacuum tubes into a Novachord. There are only 2 working examples in Britain, that are known of. As an organ fitter I was petrified whilst working on the unfamiliar Novachord. It is so complex and its internals are nothing like what’s in a early Hammond. I studied the instrument in detail and couldn’t fully fathom how it functioned to produce its sound. It was difficult to play and frequent adjustments are necessary to create nuances within its delicate timbres. I wonder if any other organists or keyboard players have struggled to play this most bizarre and complex instrument?
