tbf this is true of most genres, some artists achieve legacy status where they’re at a point where their music not charting like it used to doesn’t damage their brand in the slightest, but those are usually artists who have genuine talent and staying power as well as just something that stands out that others can only imitate. and it’s usually the imitators who get left in the dust once they’re too old to tour and make music like they used to.

For some of these artists, I'm unclear who their target audience is. Some are in their 40s and 50s, so their fanbases have also matured. Many have also taken breaks, haven't had major hits for some time, or haven't been in the limelight a while, resulting in younger generations growing up without them and being unfamiliar with them. They might be of interest to longtime fans, but they struggle with gaining new listeners even though several of them seem to be going for the youth market. The problem with untalented artists is that their fame is finite.
@cheryll.ousley218925 күн бұрын
How about maybe some of these artists just wanted to put out music to appeal to their fans and not necessarily recapture the heights of their fame? Like Mary J. Blige was never a huge mainstream artist because her music overall did not have mainstream pop appeal except for a few songs. Nelly Furtado has always put out music that spoke to who she is, not to play into the hands of the mainstream; Loose was her only album that truly crossed over in a huge way.
@kassidycharles149525 күн бұрын
Nelly Furtado was absolutely expecting a modest hit with TikTok tho, behind the scenes, 7 got delayed because of the UMG issue. There was talk about a tour, and that's also been canned cuz she can't find anyone to sponsor it, and UMG won't fund it. Some of the songs on that album are getting less than 50 spotify streams a day. Each song was meant to have a visualizer, and even those got canceled.

Katy has had more than one flop. Witness album anyone? And Childish Gambino hasn’t had a decades long career. He’s dropped all of 3 albums. People need to stop being biased about their faves underperforming when it’s obvious they dropped unsuccessful albums. If you liked the albums, good for you but a flop is still a flop regardless if you enjoyed it. The general public didn’t.
