Do you have any idea how frustrating is is to have a hat be such an iconic element to such a pivotal figure, portrayed so meticulously in a visual art, and discussed at length by the public at large... ...and none of them can tell a Fedora from a Porkpie???

That Stetson story is apocryphal, although alluring. The true story is about JBS going west on doctors orders to take advantage of the cool dry climate. While there he encountered the continued use of the military issued wool slouch hats by easterners, and vaquero hats on the indigenous and Spanish speak populations. He combined the tall crown of the slouch with the extra wide brim and the beaver felt of the vaquero and began making and marketing them in the east where nobody had seen wide brimmed hats so they believed him to be the ‘inventor’ when in reality he just got the jump on the marketing. Westerners, and southerners were well acquainted with what we could call cowboy hats by any definition before JBS was born

You should get a hat, hats are great, everyone should wear hats... if they'd like. I got a new hat about a month ago and I love it. I-ve always liked hats, in movies, historical photos, even in books when the characters are described with hats. life is short, we dont get any more, so enjoy a hat, watch, clothes, anything and everything. my hat is a Brixton field proper in black, the brim is wide and its good against, sun, rain, snow, wind, and it's beautful with every look. ok, bye

The big reason people probably stopped wearing hats is because war goods were rationed and material didn't go toward hats as often, post war popularity lowered and style shifted.

Very cool video. I would only point out that while Oppenheimer’s hat is indeed very stylish, I don’t think there’s anything particular special about it. It’s just a fedora with a telescope crown and a light pinch. It could have been made by any one of the hundreds of hat makers that operated in the 30’s and 40’s, not just Stetson. Hats of that vintage with high quality felt - and it was much higher quality than today - were easy to shape with just your hands and most men shaped their hats in a way that flattered their face best.

It's true that he wore a fedora. His style is like a pork pie but with a somewhat higher crown and more gentle crease. Keep in mind that as the popularity of fedoras became higher, Stetson started making massive amounts of them. Some of the most popular fedoras have been made by Stetson, they sold millions.

I ware one everyday. You gave the explanation of Stetson, justice. Open roads a good hat. If you are going to ware one it’s an attitude. You ware it because you want to, if you ware it to be cool - you’ll feel like a goober. Don’t worry about pulling it off, just worry about putting it on (and learn good hat etiquette) I always encourage folks to start with a cheaper straw hat, and don’t be scared to reshape it, add a unique hat band, hat pins, and feathers. Make it yours and you’ll ware it more and feel more comfortable in it. If you can get it in a good hat store and have it shaped it’s a cool experience - but not everywhere is west texas with a hat shop on every corner. Glad your work is paying off it’s a cool channel and have enjoyed watching you.

Stetson quality and customer service is shit these days and aren't recommended anymore by a lot of hat shops. My personal exp is I wore my open road 6x out in a misty drizzle and the felt bubbled up after it got slightly wet and dried properly. Stetson told me to return it to the store I bought it from and then went on to ghost me, but stores won't honor returns after you wear them. So thanks for nothing stetson! I urge all your viewers to buy something else. The hats and guitars guy in yt is a great resource.

Oppenheimer Plot Summary (Heavy Spoilers) J. Robert Oppenheimer, an idealistic honey bee who has the ability to talk to humans, has recently graduated from college and is about to enter the hive's Honex Industries honey-making workforce with his best friend, Adam Flayman. J. Robert Oppenheimer is initially excited to join the workforce, but his ambitious, insubordinate attitude emerges upon discovering that his choice of job will never change once picked. Later, the two bees run into a group of Pollen Jocks, bees who collect pollen from flowers outside the hive, and they offer to take J. Robert Oppenheimer with them if he is "bee enough". While on his first pollen-gathering expedition in New York City, J. Robert Oppenheimer gets lost in the rain, and ends up on the balcony of a human florist named Vanessa Bloome. Upon noticing J. Robert Oppenheimer, Vanessa's boyfriend Ken attempts to squash him, but Vanessa gently catches and releases J. Robert Oppenheimer outside the window, saving his life. J. Robert Oppenheimer later returns to express his gratitude to Vanessa, breaking the sacred rule that bees are not to communicate with humans. J. Robert Oppenheimer and Vanessa develop a close friendship, bordering on attraction, and spend time together. When he and Vanessa are in the grocery store, J. Robert Oppenheimer discovers that the humans have been stealing and eating the bees' honey for centuries. He decides to journey to Honey Farms, which supplies the grocery store with its honey. Incredulous at the poor treatment of the bees in the hive, including the use of bee smokers to incapacitate the colony, J. Robert Oppenheimer decides to sue the human race to put an end to exploitation of the bees, with Vanessa agreeing to help. J. Robert Oppenheimer's mission attracts wide attention from bees and humans alike, with countless spectators attending the trial. Although J. Robert Oppenheimer is up against tough defense attorney Layton T. Montgomery, the trial's first day goes well. That evening, J. Robert Oppenheimer is having dinner with Vanessa when Ken shows up. Vanessa leaves the room, and Ken expresses to J. Robert Oppenheimer that he hates the pair spending time together. When J. Robert Oppenheimer leaves to use the restroom, Ken ambushes J. Robert Oppenheimer and attempts to kill him, only for Vanessa to intervene and break up with Ken. The second day at the trial, Montgomery unleashes an unrepentant character assassination against the bees, leading a deeply offended Adam to sting him. Montgomery immediately exaggerates the stinging to make himself seem the victim of an assault while simultaneously tarnishing Adam. Adam's actions jeopardize the bees' credibility and his life, though he recovers. The third day, J. Robert Oppenheimer wins the trial by exposing the jury to the torturous treatment of bees, particularly use of the smoker, and prevents humans from stealing honey from bees ever again. Having lost the trial, Montgomery cryptically warns J. Robert Oppenheimer that a negative shift of nature is imminent. With Honex stopping honey production, every bee is put out of a job, including the vitally important Pollen Jocks, resulting in all the world's flowers beginning to die out without any pollination. Before long, the last remaining flowers on Earth are being stockpiled in Pasadena, California, intended for the last Tournament of Roses Parade. J. Robert Oppenheimer and Vanessa travel to the parade and steal a float, which they load into a plane. They hope to bring the flowers to the bees so they can re-pollinate the world's last remaining flowers. When the plane's pilot and co-pilot both fall unconscious, Vanessa is forced to land the plane, with help from J. Robert Oppenheimer and the bees from J. Robert Oppenheimer's hive. J. Robert Oppenheimer becomes a member of the Pollen Jocks, and they fly off to a flower patch. Armed with the pollen of the last flowers, J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Pollen Jocks reverse the damage and save the world's flowers, restarting the bees' honey production. Later on, J. Robert Oppenheimer runs a law firm at Vanessa's flower shop titled "Insects at Law", which handles disputes between animals and humans. While selling flowers to customers, Vanessa offers certain brands of honey that are "bee-approved".

The specific time when (young) men stopped wearing hats was circa 1960, not 1945. President John Kennedy was young, handsome, and charismatic, and he hated the way he looked in a hat. Men were still expected to wear hats at special events such as presidential inaugurations and he did. However he quickly took it off and carried it. By 1963, he had pretty much decimated the hat industry by merely choosing not to wear a hat. The name connected with the atomic bomb in that era was Albert Einstein, for good or ill. The publications which wrote about the Atomic Age tended to concentrate on Einstein, for the theory that made it possible to blow up big stuff, and Werner Von Braun, erstwhile Nazi scientist, for the means of delivering it to Kruschev's bathroom window. Oppenheimer was pretty much a no-show in popular culture. Young Americans were very susceptible to trends, fashions, and fads at the time in everything from cars (fins) to toys (Hula Hoops) to music (Elvis, Et al.) to clothes (penny loafers). If you look at pictures of American men taken between 1945 and 1958 or so, you will notice that almost all men are wearing hats outside. The few that aren't are usually very young. By 1964, almost no men wore hats. The few who did were generally older. An odd exception to this was rock musicians of the late Sixties who sometimes wore hats (usually some kind of thrift store goof) for their album cover photos, which might make you think this was a trend. It wasn't. At any rate, John Kennedy absolutely set the styling trend for young men in the age of conformity. Dry tousled hair is another JFK trademark which hung on until the Eighties. John Travolta succeeded in bringing the cowboy hat back in 1980 with his movie, "Urban Cowboy" but this was more of a niche phenomenon. When Kennedy visited Texas (not the last time), he was given a big Stetson cowboy hat by his vice-president, Lyndon Johnson. He put it on for about 15 seconds, to avoid overtly offending Johnson, and then it vanished. Incidentally, although he famously wore a Stetson Open Road, LBJ did not resurrect the hat industry after JFK was gone. He was not young, handsome or charismatic, and young men of draft age (born 1930-1950) loathed him. The Open Road Stetson is frequently called an LBJ. The speed with which JFK killed the American hat was astonishing. It was not intentional. He just didn't like the way he looked in a hat. I enjoyed your video.
