Thank you, Ben, for your high quality videos. I had considerable difficulty training a David Austin Tess of the d'Urbevilles climbing rose up 5-6' round metal obelisk next to my home entrance. I tried to guide and attach the canes at 45 degrees around the obelisk but found it a difficult task. If the canes were young and pliable, they were too short to guide. If they were older and longer, they were too stiff to conform to the round obelisk. For now, I'm guiding it around the nearby medium-diameter pillar instead, but wondering if I should transplant it elsewhere so it can spread widthwise instead, allowing its branches to naturally and gracefully arc. Any tips?

Hi Ben! Thank you for all the hard work you put into educating us. I'm trying to find a baby pink climber, 8ft+... preferably 10-12, that can handle our 100° + summers, and smashing downpours. Its going on a pergola, so it will have some shade in the afternoon. I'm currently looking at Wedgewood and James Gallway. I got told the JG will only flower at the top, leaving just stems and thorns at the bottom.... And that wedgewood has problems with bleaching out and/or very short vase life. What do you think is my best pick for this space?
@the_gardenerben10 ай бұрын
Hi, and thank you for your comment. I’m glad that you enjoy the content created James Galway if you care to take a look at my personal review along with its sister Rose, the pilgrim one of the few that have the ability to flower ground to tip creating beautiful pillar displays, the Wedgewood rose is incredibly susceptible to some bleaching and to balling so if it is likely that you are going to have lots of heavy summer showers, this is probably a road for you to avoid and I think that James Galway would be a much better option for you although here in the UK we don’t experience temperature anywhere near that high

Hi Ben! Kevin from western, New York State in the US. I regularly use your videos as a resource for choosing DA roses! I am wondering if you have recommendations for DA roses (or any rose for that matter) that look best alone (great stand-alone plant habit and flowering), and those that might make a bigger impact when grouped in 3s or 5s as suggested on the DA website. I realize that all roses will make a bigger impact when grouped, but as I plan a garden that will be a "rose garden," I'd like to mix it up with stand-alone varieties and groups.

I have moved into a house that has a south-facing garden wall with many old DA climbing roses on it. They're probably 7-10 years old. Many are A Shropshire Lad. Others don't have tags so I don't know. They are doing okay, but certainly look nothing like the images you see of beautiful climbers in full flower. I am new to roses, but have been immersing myself in content from you and a few other very knowledgeable KZbinrs. I see nothing not ideal about the physical placement of the roses. These climbers have gravel at their base, with a layer of some sort of plastic under it. I don't know how they've been fed or to what extent. From what you said in this video, it sounds like they need fertilization along the width of the wall that they cover, and I can't see how they could have been getting anything other than a feed right at the roots. What do you recommend?
@the_gardenerben3 ай бұрын
@@sarahmckenna8906 welcome along and thank you for your coming. If it’s all possible you need to remove the plastic or membrane surrounding them and peel back. The gravel is then a point of adding as much organic matter as you can large climber need large amounts of open soil and more importantly, large amounts of organic matter and soil improving so the more that you can add in a large area around the root base the better obviously if they’re planted up against the wall, are going to be spread out along that wall Them deeply every year to death of three or 4 inches as far as you can do and then consider regenerating them if they’re not flowering properly it’s probably down to the fact they’re getting old and Woody and haven’t been pruned correctly so stay tuned for this year media or go back on my pruning tutorials if you need any assistance at all don’t hesitate to ask
@sarahmckenna89063 ай бұрын
@@the_gardenerben I got a bit more information about that spot. The roses are only 6 years old, younger than I thought. The plastic is a weed blocker that is permeable for water. They've been fed 6-weekly throughout the growing season through that gravel and permeable plastic layer. Additionally, they've had their big pruning in the late fall / early winter after they stopped blooming. I'm wondering if this last bit of information could account for their poor performance. Everything I've been learning indicates that the big prune should come in the early spring. Any other thoughts? I'm in zone 9a on the Isle of Man, but I'm inland (by island standards). Thank you so much!

In this particular video, the measurements mentioned are in inches, not in centimetres so if you’re looking to grow a climber Apple wall that’s going to reach between 10 and 12 feet you’re going to need a container that’s at least 120 cm or 48 inches in diameter

You could certainly try it with an obelisk. Yes, as I mention in my full personal review which is available to watch here it is a large informal floppy shrub not helped particularly by the size of the balloons which are massive.
