It would have been interesting if The Kinks had been asked to perform at Woodstick since the 4 year ban of their playing the States was lifted that year and it would have reinvigorated their career at a time when they really needed it. Obviously, the group soldiered on and made a big comeback in 1970 with Lola and even bigger success as an arena rock band in the late 70s/early 80s but one can only wonder what trajectory theiir career would have taken had they played Woodstock.

Although they weren't very well known at the time of the Woodstock festival, Fairport Convention would have, no doubt, gathered a lot of attention, and new fans had they appeared on that huge stage. Sandy Denny would have 'wowed the crowd' with her beautiful voice, as I could always imagine them performing "I'll Keep it With Mine", along w/"Reynardine", and "Matty Groves". A great band of its time, and more legendary as time marches on, but Woodstock would have been great for them, alongside their American 'cousins', the Jefferson Airplane, who did play the festival. "Thanks" for this interesting topic, as it's always good to hear something new and vital concerning this legendary event. ☮️ and ❤ in the new year!

You echo my thoughts. I prefer their earlier work. "I'll Keep it with Mine" brings tears to my eyes even after a hundred of so listenings, but I can't quite imagine them doing it on the Woodstock stage. A bit easier to imagine "Matty Groves". Fairport wasn't just a great band; it was a supergroup. Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, and Ian Matthews all went on to become great solo artists and staples of my musical fare.

Slightly apropos of this video, my family stayed at David Geffen‘s upper West side apartment during the Woodstock weekend in August 1969. My father was a business manager in the music industry, and Geffen was an acquaintance. The apartment was shared by Laura Nyro . I played her acoustic guitar from the closet. And ran upstairs because my brothers had discovered a bag of grass in the ice bucket. A gift we did indeed enjoy. David Geffen and Laura Nyro were not there that weekend, as they were at the festival.

Maybe we could just go for one day? Nope. The parents were firm on this one! Dad: "You see that crowd? You want to be in the middle of that?" Me: "Yes!" Dad: "You're nuts!" Documenting by movie-makers a 3-day Rock Music event with the largest audience ever, at the time, with some of the most popular musicians at the time should have been sufficient inspiration enough for mostly all the bands to want to get in on the bill (if they could), you would think. However, the Hindsight/20/20 thing applies here, I guess. IOW, it was the movie that really made this event more than one big, wild, giant rumour - if you know what I mean.

I would have liked it if 'Blue Cheer' had played at Woodstock. My favorite act on the bill was Johnny Winter... and Hendrix. I often wonder how 3 days of music got condensed down to a 2+ hour movie and album. I think of all the footage that hit the cutting room floor, never to be seen or heard.

Interesting that I have never heard of Paul Revere and the Raiders being considered. Granted they were often seen as much as a novelty as a serious band, but from mid-1966 to mid-1969, only the Beatles and the Stones sold more records than they did. And they had shown that they could write very serious rock tunes like Hungry and Kicks. Maybe the costumes were the issue...

And then, there's the famous story about Neil Young actually attending to perform with Crosby, Still and Nash, but refused to be filmed. So the film makers just cut him out of the movie, and the other three played the set. There's a scene in the film where the back of Neil's head appears for a fleeting second, presumably as an elbow in his ribs by the film makers, but there are no reports whether Neil ever saw it. Oh, and by the way, The Archies were on the bill, but they refused, because the "Jughead is Dead" rumors were still boosting their sales.

A glaring omission from your list was the "Cinderella story" of the Atlanta Pop Festival a month prior and that being Grand Funk Railroad. And before you say, "they were barely known", consider that Mountain wasn't even signed to a major label yet, and they were at Woodstock. GFR was not only already signed to Capitol, but their debut album would be release in a couple of weeks. Word of mouth had already gotten around about their performance in Atlanta and I'm surprised it didn't reach Michael Lang's ears!

The Jeff Beck Group were very innovative, including influencing Page’s new venture. But Beck being Beck, he kept jumping off the career carousel. A Woodstock appearance might have catapulted him into the ‘big’ sphere, but it wasn’t really him.

One of the better Canadian Bands (Lighthouse) did not like the lack of Security, but later wished they had played, presumably not knowing the near Cult like status of the concert in hindsight. Obviously a bigger deal than they thought at the time. They were not alone in this regard as I thought only a few of the better known bands either could not or would not play, there are 20+ bands that missed out on WOODSTOCK just from what i see on this list alone!

For the record, regarding Tommy James.....Woodstock co-organizer Artie Kornfeld has said in no uncertain terms that Tommy's story is PURE FICTION, and that TJ & the Shondells were NEVER a consideration for the festival. I love TJ & the Shondells, but I'm taking Artie's word on this one.
@the_guitar_trooper12 күн бұрын
Both are plausible, but you’re probably right.
@JohnJarpe-b9y10 күн бұрын
Ironically the biggest bands like CCR and Blood, Sweat, and Tears are not remembered as playing the festival because the producers of the movie Woodstock couldn’t afford the steep fees the bands were charging for participation in the film. The film was seen by many more people than were in the often stoned out audience sitting a quarter mile away from the stage battling rain, mud, and the hassles involved in what would be declared a national disaster area to be able to give an accounting that could compete with a film seen by the many millions of people and would come to to be seen as the official record of the festival. The most iconic performances associated with the festival were by bands who were of a less superstar quality at the time of the festival but whose performances immortalized in film would forever associate them with the event. Bands like Country Joe And The Fish come to mind whose Ain’t Fixing To Die Rag was more or less impromptu and would never have become cultural anthems were they not featured in the film and subsequent soundtrack.

The usual story is that the only reason that they got the gig was because Jimi Hendrix recommended them to the promoters. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. And….. don’t forget that the group got a contract to front a TV variety show that ran several seasons. Go figure.

Zager and Evans? Of the less-than-one-hit-wonder 'In The Year 2525'? How embarrassing!! Irrespective of the duo’s flash-in-the-pan status, “In The Year 2525” was a HUGE hit. It went to number one on 8 charts in the U.S., UK, New Zealand, and Ireland. It another example of an act that MIGHT have found a wider audience by playing Woodstock.

Woodstock is treated like the pinical or Rock an Roll. In reality it was an outdoor drug party in an over crowded field. Free love and drugs and looking like sh!t were made popular. It actually was the death of a once great country they were celebrating. From then on our wealth, safety and literacy declined dratically. Rock On.
