……I still do not subscribe to 施家十四個 until this video , 吸引我去睇系在Covin-19下你們一家為什麼在疫情下回流加拿大? 而且有一個 new born baby！但Greg 說話好生動和孩子英文發音👍而中文又不錯，一定是非一般的家教令我感興趣繼續去了解⋯直到前一集才知Greg原來是個心得投資人.和這一集看到太太是個教育專材，非常有興趣看看怎樣教育孩子⋯雖然孩子已長大，但亦希望知到教育孩子的心得，怎能令未來新一代可以幾文幾語，我孩子在kindergarten 也在國際學校學過中文，課堂後除工課㚈，同學交流不能有其它語言，所以到現在他是不太憧中文, 小時候也送他課外學中文國語課，可能日常生活中無人和他對話，溝通，久而久之在家也是他説英文，回應他中文，若他不明白、不理解、就是英文互通，但由於中文是一音有幾意，時常唔解！學中文只是每年暑假返香港探親時而學些，飛機還未起飛已經忙掉！今時今日我想中文是國際語言無人不想學！多謝你們的分亨！👍💪🤩🤩🤩😝🤓施家孩子很可愛又精令！看到多倫多已經有雪❄️，他們又要適應新環境！💪💪❤️

Exposure 好重要。我們家中也有接觸非廣東話方言。所以，我們不怕羞都聽講各種語言：粵語，普通話，英文，法文，德文，日語，西班牙話，意大利文。(當然不是全通，但有形有聲呀)

好鐘意聽呢個主題啊，好想知道，如果家長英文好差，無辦法日常同小朋友用英文溝通，我囡囡而家就來一歲，我暫時係每日有一個鐘讀英文繪本(或者唱英文兒歌)比距聽，其餘時間都係母語溝通，好想聽兩位講下如果英文基礎差的父母可以做d咩野去培養英文基礎呢，多謝曬兩位。

The best way to learn a language is through being exposed to it in contexts that tap into the learner’s interests. For example, a child can learn English through watching educational cartoons in English with English captions (*note: captions should not be in any other language).

我太太也是福建人，佢21歲嫁比我，23歲常留香港，佢未有身份證時每日在家看電視，我每日放工同佢講白話，呢個點、點、點，三年半左右批來港時已可完全講白話，只是雲同榮分開，所以兩個仔改名避開呢兩個字，其實學語言係真要多聽同講，即如師太講咁、咁、咁。

The most effortless way would be to watch TV shows/programs that you enjoy in English with English captions only (*note: do not put on Chinese captions). I don’t recommend reading/watching things that you find boring. We learn the best when we are enjoying ourselves.

我门来之前女儿在玫瑰岗小学读书，有一定中文基础，小四来多村后没有继续修读中文。在香港和中国进入四大会计师事务所实习，项目都是中英双语文件，中文合同看不懂，而自己的顶头上司英国人中文特别好，理解项目合同条款的重点，清晰用户的真实理念，一山比一山高。现在她自学中文，我微信坚持用中文与她交流，她是双语一起来。

Thank you for the sharing! How would you distribute the time exposure (split) on different language? For example, would you have both English and Cantonese in the same setting? Or we should have at least x amount of time in single language setting?

Preferably, one parent speaks to the child in one language and the other parent in another language.

Try putting the different sounds on flash cards and “play a game” of putting flash cards together to guess the words. For example, putting the “p”, “o”, and “t” cards together. First ask her to read out the individual sounds, then string the three sounds together with increasing speed until she reads out the whole word.

The original plan was that I speak to the kids in English only and Greg speaks to them in Chinese only. Now that the kids are quite fluent in English already, I speak Cantonese with them more and more.

Thanks for sharing! So if we speak primarily Cantonese at home, how should we go about learning phonics? My daughter is 4, she understands and speaks little English...

As first exposure, the best would be through structured lessons at school since teachers are expected to teach students phonics in a systematic manner. However, if your child’s school doesn’t offer that as part of the program, parents will have to do a lot more at home to help their children learn phonics. I suggest that phonics be introduced in this order: 1) consonants 2) short vowels 3) long vowels 4) consonant digraphs 5) blends

There are lots of songs on KZbin that can help children learn phonics. You can try putting “phonics song” in the search bar. You probably won’t find a song with all the phonics she needs to learn, but it will be a fun start and effortless first exposure.

I was born in HK. My family moved to Toronto when I was 8 years old and I lived there until I graduated from university. I got my teaching credentials in Canada before moving back to HK to work.

如果计划来多村移民，在香港正在读书的做好利用香港公立学校的中文教育系统，好好读中文，最好中文数学都是用中文教学的学校，在小四前大好中文基础。英文来了学一年就可以跟上，完全不用担心。而中文就真的太少机会提高了。多村是多种族多语言文化族群，有自己种族的文化基础非常有价值，特别是当进入社会，无论哪个行业都有个种族文化背景为个种族服务。进入大公司如果有自己种族的文化基础才更有发挥的机会。比如银行，四大会计师事务所，医院诊所。所以幼儿园或者小学如果打算今后移民多村，最好利用来之前的机会多学中文，特别是书写和阅读。

The IPA system is helpful for learning ANY language; however, for a child trying to learn English phonics, learning it through using English alphabets is definitely easier.

You can start teaching your child phonics as soon as he/she learns all the English alphabets.

gloria sham I personally like to teach my kids to distinguish the difference between “letter” and “sound”. I first teach them to recognise the letters, then I teach them what sound/sounds each letter is associated with.

Good question. In casual settings, I tend to think in Chinese since most of my family and friends speak Cantonese. In formal settings, I tend to think in English since I was educated with English as the primary language and my colleagues were mostly westerners.
