He took many LSD trips with the Guru of the acid age Timothy Leary. There used to be a poster of Leary and Tommy in a bed with the covers pulled up to their necks Grinning and laughing tripping their balls off OH how i wish for the old days LOL

The Destruction of instruments on stage was something that the Who was Famous for doing and this particular video was also a notable incident the band was known for and that is the Drummer, Keith Moon, he had set (what was supposed to be a small charge) Very big charge of explosive in his Bass drum for the end of the song, unfortunately, Pete Townshend was standing a bit closer than planned and got not only an Earful (later rumours that this resulted in his hearing loss) but a Hair full and thought his hair was on fire LOL. Keith Moon aka "Moon the Loon" was known as a crazy prankster and throughout his tenure, had pulled off some outlandish stunts in his time!

I remember watching that on our black and white TV back in the '60s. The Smothers Brothers courageously broadcast live. I had never heard anything like this. I was transfixed, and didn't realize until the song was over that my face was about two feet from the TV screen. I was gobsmacked well before they began to demolish their instruments. The way Pete Townshend tells it, The Who was playing a downstairs club with a low ceiling. Leaping about, as was his custom, Pete smashed the neck of his guitar on the ceiling, breaking it. He loved that guitar, and was pissed off that the audience didn't seem to care. A wild man when on stage, Pete decided on the spot that he would make them care, and proceeded to destroy the guitar. It became a trap for the band because, no matter how awesome the show was, fans would go away disappointed if they didn't smash their instruments. My Generation also generated the infamous line, " I hope I die before I get old," something else Pete would have to live with as he hit his 40s, 50s, 60s, etc.

Equipment destruction was kind of their Thing for a while - but that explosion was bigger than Keith intended and helped do permanent damage to Pete's hearing. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey both had successful solo careers and have recorded new Who material in the last decade; Keith Moon and John Entwistle are no longer with us. (Keith never met restraint in his life, and the drugs took a bit longer to catch up to John.) "Who Are You," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Baba O'Riley" and I believe "I Can See for Miles" were all used as theme tunes for various parts of the CSI franchise. You can't go wrong with anything from Who's Next or Quadrophenia.

My Generation: why don't you all fffffffffade away. Attitude for days. I heard a figure who lived these times say the stuttering was a bit of in-joke reference to the vocal stammerings of being on speed, which the Mods were known for. Yeah, an infamous performance I suppose for Keith putting an extra dose of gunpowder in his kit for the finale, permanently damaging Pete's hearing in one ear, and also sending a shard through his arm. You can see Keith grasp his bicep as he makes off the stage.

Ok, if you’re reacting to The Who, it’s gotta be a live performance. I would HIGHLY recommend “Who Are You” which was filmed while they were in the studio, and you really get a glimpse of the type of relationship they had with each other...lots of great musicianship as well as goofing off. Keith Moon or “Moon the Loon” was one in a bajillion. They modeled “Animal” from the Muppets after him. Please check this gem out...you won’t be sorry!

Moon plied the pyro guy with brandy and he loaded the drums with way more explosive powder than originally intended, the end of the song was supposed to be little more than a camera flash going off. Bear in mind that the rest of the band had no idea what was going to happen, the resulting explosion set light to Petes hair and left Moon with bits of cymbal stuck in his arms Also Bettie Davis was watching from the wings and fainted into Mickey Roonies arms. ,!!

To understand the dynamics within the who, here is a story. Around 1973 or so, the band was going to meet with the new executive at the record label. Apparently, the singer Roger Daltry was complaining about it. Finally, the guitarist Pete Townshend told Daltry to "shut the fuck up" and then he attempted to knock Daltry over the head with his guitar. Daltry dodged the blow and then cold cocked Townshed, knocking him out as the record executive entered the room. The executive was aghast and asked if it always like this between those two. Drummer Keith Moon quipped, "No, this is a good day for them." The bassist John Entwhistle, the quiet one, was probably in a corner guarding his bass.
