The RV Water System is pretty easy to understand, once you know what goes where and why. This is an in-depth overview.
Hooking Up RV Water or Filling the Tank is easy since your RV has all the comforts of home. Including running water! Of course, since this is a home on wheels, you need to either; fill the freshwater tank and take the water with you or hook up to a water supply when you get to a site with full or partial hookups.
In this video, we will show you how to install a water filter, where the charcoal filter is, what a pressure regulator does, where to fill the water tank and the difference between the water tank and the City Water Connection.

My friend, Mike PQ, gave this info as a great addition (from the comments section) - The extra hose before the pump is to suck RV antifreeze into your system through the pump, so your lines don't freeze in VT at -20° hahaha. The red and blue lines outside are your lowest hot and cold line points in the system, so you can crack those and wait for the water to pump through your sinks, toilets, showers, and outdoor showers. The antifreeze will flow out the lowest points. then close those valves. The hot water tank shut-off valves are to bypass the hot water tank, so you can drain it out for the winter. All water must be removed!!
Frozen pipes suck, but you wouldn’t have to know about that in So. Cal
.
P.S. Always bypass your water filter before pumping antifreeze into the system!

Hey Southern friend.... LOLOLOL Hi Mike! Great video!! The extra hose before the pump is to suck RV antifreeze into your system through the pump, so your lines don't freeze in VT at -20° hahaha . The red and blue lines outside are your lowest hot and cold line point in the system, so you can crack those and wait for water to pump through your sinks, toilets, showers, and out door showers. How do you bypass the water filter? Do you have to do this manually? I just removed the filter and then used the extra hose to pull antifreeze throughout. It of course filled the water filter housing first.

@@cdb1386 I have a bypass hose with the filter fittings in both ends. It just replaces the filter, so the antifreeze just flows throughout the lines.

Just a heads-up. Your "extra hose" is the pick up line to draw antifreeze directly from the bottle to winterize the water lines.

I bought this water heater kzbin.infoUgkx8G49mV71sAzUl9shXyLW-r3XgHH9EVh1 for use in my bus conversion. I installed it under my kitchen sink and it is fed by a high efficiency on-demand LP water heater. It is both a backup hot water source as well as a water saving device since we have hot water on demand rather than having to wait for the gas on demand water heater to finish its ignition cycle. I decided on this water heater due to the fact that it only draws 1300watts when it's ON instead of the 1500 watts that most Water heaters this size draw. In an RV a couple hundred watts can be a big deal. With very low standby losses, I don't have to worry about excessive power consumption. When propane is not available for our gas water heater, in conjunction with our low flow shower head there is enough hot water available to shower, albeit we won't be taking "hotel showers." Also very happy with the recovery rate of this water heater. Granted, it is quite small, but it does exactly what we need it to do.

@@jocarson5310 If they have valves on them, they typically are to let out (discharge)hot (red) or cold (blue) water out of your water heater or water tank. Can't really tell without pictures. Sometimes they can be a way to input antifreeze into the system when you winterize your RV. Hope that helps. Hard to tell without pics. Sorry.

The spare hose at 5:35 is there to winterize the unit, simply close the valve at the bottom of the hose to cut the tank out of the system and place the end of the hose into a container of rv antifreeze turn the pump on and it will charge the lines with antifreeze. This feature is on rv's with "winter packages" along with tank heaters and a insulated underbelly.

Oh thank you! This was helpful to navigate the hoses. I have SO many water questions in my new old (1997) Jayco trailer! Let me know if you have any videos of the following: #1. I want to move the intake locations on the exterior of the trailer. Just down about 3 inches because on the inside - the jackknife sofa rests directly on the hoses and causes the bed not to be level…🤦🏻‍♀️ #2. Replace the HW tank. #3. Swap out all faucets and shower/tub spigot. And when I do these things maybe I will make a video. 👩🏻‍🔧

Thanks. Already replaced those. Yes, they were leaking. I didn't realize that I didn't have an Anode Rod in my water heater, so they got sacrificed and corroded. Uugh. All done now though. I will post some pics or a video of that soon. Can't post any pics on these comments, which sucks.

As others have stated, well-produced video in tracing and explaining the typical plumbing system. Kudos! One comment, though, that I have not seen on this thread: the RV industry's mixing of materials in the plumbing systems...namely PEX and vinyl tubing. This is a pet peeve of "Rigor RV Repair" (also on KZbin) to the point where he won't consider some RV brands (such as GDRV). In short, he believes that using PEX crimps on vinyl tubing is a big no-no....a set of leaks that are inevitable. Yes, the vinyl tubing is flexible and makes great curves (as in your rig going to the outdoor shower fixture), whereas PEX is not so easy to make turns (without the use of more fittings and more time ($$) in manufacturing), but I believe him when he says that PEX crimps should NOT be used on vinyl tubing (you couldn't pass code in a sticks & bricks application, so why does the RV industry get away with it?). As such, I plan to strip out all my rig's vinyl and re-plumb with PEX tubing and PEX crimps on PEX connectors (brass). Just food for everyone's thoughts. Cheers.

Excellent overview, best I've seen. My rv 2012 23ft Walkabout by Homette has some of the pluming above the underbelly and below rv's floor - not as accesable. My leak occurs at water pump, which is under the kitchen drawers, and placed nearly to the outer edge of the trailer, making it hard to access without removing all the drawers and the vertical panel above the pump (panel is right at, touches, mid-section of pump, arg). THIS LEAK ONLY OCCURS WHEN I TURN ON THE HOT WATER HEATER !? Is It: 1) the hot water 'in' fitting on pump? 2) some other logical point on the pump? 3) should i pull everything out and check the shurflo 4008 for other possible failure points ?

Sorry to say but you are most likely going to need to take out the drawers and panel to get a better look. If your drawers are like mine, there should be two black tabs on the side of the slide mechanism. Simply press those together while pulling the drawer and your drawer should release from the slide. Typically, a pump, pumps water into the water heater, not the other way around. Typically, the hot water never goes into the pump. The pump just pressurizes the hot water in the tank and pushed hot water to the sink/shower. Maybe the water heater (when turned on) is putting backflow pressure to the pump and perhaps there is a check valve near the pump that is not working correctly. Sorry for the delayed response. My wife and I are training to hike the John, Muir, Trail, and we have been out of cell phone connection. To answer your question, if I understand it correctly, to fill your tank, there is just a cap and an inlet that you put your hose into and you fill up the tank that way. There is no connection per se. your tank is filled by gravity. The water just goes down the hose into the tank.

Sounds too easy, but first check the screen on your tap. It may be clogged. Clean with vinegar and water to get rid of the scale. Let me know if that works.

Thanks, nice video. That blue line under the shower pan is not a drain. I think the drain is likely 1-1/2” pvc that goes into a gray water tank. That blue line is a water line that probably feeds something in your bathroom. That small line would not work as a drain for the shower, it would get clogged too easily.

A lot of things on an RV don’t make sense. Manufacturers cut corners everywhere to save a buck. The drain is the Only thing I can see that connects to that. We have a great drain screen that keeps most junk from clogging that dinky hose.

The kitchen sink water goes into the gray tank. Not the black tank. The black tank is just for Poopies. That’s why you always dump the black tank first and then dump the gray tank because the soap from the gray tank will wash out your gross black tank remnants.

Great video but you failed to mention what prevents the city water from filling up the holding tank. Unless I missed it? In my experience it’s been the only part of my rv’s (3 different makes models etc) water system that failed me. That’s the check valve on the water pump. My 1997 Winnebago wonderer 35 motohome ever saw 5lbs over 40psi it would overwhelm the valve on the pump and fill up my freshwater tank until it was like a balloon under my floor😅. 40psi is the magic #.

There would only be a tank on the portable gravity fill area on your passenger side. If you choose to use the city water attachment on the driver side of your rig, that will not go into a tank but will go directly to your plumbing, meaning your shower, faucets and toilet. After the hot water comes out of the hot water tank there is a connection between the hot and cold with a valve in between. The valve appears to be closed. What is it for?

I see what you're talking about. It's at 9:23 in the video. I'm assuming it's a bypass valve (I actually don't know why they put that in there). It is closed because if it was open, the hot and cold water would mix at that point and it would defeat the purpose of each system. Any plumbers out there have an answer? I'm stumped too! Yes, it sounds like you may have an open valve. Typically you may see some hoses coming out of the bottom of your RV. Chase those hoses back up into the RV and look for an open valve. Those are usually to empty the tank. Other than that, I would just go through kind of like I did one hose at a time and ensure that all the valves are in the right position. Remember that the valve knob should be in line with your hose for it to be open and if it’s at a 90° angle that typically means it’s closed. Best of luck to you Miguel.

Yes, let’s say you have a 5 gallon water heater, you can get about 8 gallons out of it during a long shower because it is constantly being replenished with water from either your tank or city water. I typically only turn on my water heater about 20 minutes before I need it. So it’s not consuming a lot of energy all day.

Hey Klayton, i’m so glad you like the video. Yes it is possible to plumb the water to fill the tank inside the camper but what happens if you forget to turn off the water at once the tank is full? It will just spill out the overflow valve. Typically, you just fill the water tank and once that’s done, you can connect to the city water and just use the city water pressure to have plumbing inside your RV just like at home. Just ensure that you turn off the water pump, or else you will be pumping water from your water tank instead. I hope that helps. Try not to think too far out of the box, RV water systems have been around a long time and most people have thought of everything. The way the RV is typically set up is usually the best for that type of RV.

In theory, yes, you can remove the water tank, if you never plan on using it and only want to have city water fed directly into your rig. The water pump only pumps water from the tank. You will not need the pump if you are directly connected to city water pressure. Hope that helps.

Basically you just flip a switch and then the pump should start running. You need to ensure that you have enough of a pump to pump from another source, such as a stream or lake. The longer the hose, the bigger the pump you will need. You lose a lot of pressure depending upon how long your hose is.

Without seeing your water tank, I can't really give you a, "for sure" answer, but I think you're good with only two valves. Just think about the flow of water (hot or cold) and what the valves accomplish by turning them on/off. I think you should be good. Hope that helps. If everything is working well now, even better 🙂

You're funny. I didn't realize I said, "hot water heater". :-). Yes, it's just a water heater. Trying to voiceover videos, sometimes I get tongue-tied. The hoses with the plugs are most likely drain tubes. So if you wanted to drain your tank(s), you can do it with those tubes. Just take off the cap (and save it somewhere) and open the valve. It will drain the water.

Of course, it is hard to give you an exact way to do this because I don’t know your rig. Since it is freezing there, you should put your filter on the interior. I have seen many people put a filter outside, just before it connects to the RV, but since it’s freezing there, you need to put it interior. Is there a way you can trace the water hose from the connection on the interior? It may be behind a cabinet or something. That would be my best advice but it’s hard to know. So sorry. Please let me know what you come up with. 😁

I have a permanent stationed rv that has been sourced with an underground electric and a fresh waterline to my rv ( they were placed 24" underground.) So, I don't use my pump. Problem is fresh water runs up to the pressure regulator, but no water running in the rv? We have had an unusual freeze for the last few weeks (10, 12, 16, etc degrees and day temps of 30-42) could this effect water flow in the rv....sorry for the long verbage

Yes, a freeze will definitely affect your water and water pressure. Hopefully your pipes are not frozen. Typically people leave a faucet dripping to keep water flowing throughout or they use heaters to keep the pipes warm. I am sorry, but I am not a cold weather enthusiast. I live in Southern California, so I don’t know much about that. So sorry.

Typically, there is another port for your hose that says city water. If you turn your hose on and have it connected to that port, you should have running water and you won’t have to use the pump. Depending on where you are in the country you may want to get a heated hose, so your water doesn’t freeze inside your hose or at the Spigot.

That is kind of unusual. I haven’t heard of that before. I would check to see if your check valve is working on your city water connection end. It would either be that or one of your valves is turned off. It sounds like you had it all right. When you connect to your city water connection, you should turn off your water pump and everything should work fine with the pressure coming from city water.

Hey Bob. Without actually looking at it, it’s really hard to tell. Have you checked all of your check valves? Typically, that is the first point of failure. If you are connecting to city water, well, a check valve might be broken or damaged and that right exactly could mess things up. There might be other videos out there on check valves. if you are using city water, and have pressure to your system, make sure that you turn off your water pump. Hope that helps some.

Well, I kinda did the P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) for a layman. That's one thing that sucks about the RV (and Boating) industry is that they don't give the diagrams to the RV owner, which is pretty lame. In manufacturing, they cut a lot of corners and change stuff on the fly.

Yes, I change my charcoal filter about every six months. Sometimes it gets clogged or it’s just more sanitary to ensure I change it every six months. yes, there is enough room to undo the filter housing. It looks big, but all you need to do is unscrew it from the top and it just drops out. When you replace it. You just put a new filter in there and clean it and it is super easy to reinstall.

Not sure if I understand correctly. Is the commode filling up with water or human waste? Is it’s filling up with water, and you’re not actively filling it up, then you have a leak somewhere. Is your camper hooked up to city water (water hose connected to a spigot)? If so, your pump will not come on.

If my check valves are working correctly, the water should never be going into my tank. It is a straight path that bypasses my tank altogether. The only way I can fill my tank is from the outside (a totally different input).

My question is what does the INSIDE of the fresh water tank look like. Is there a hose inside that pulls the water out of the tank or is it just gravity drained out the bottom. I ask because once our fresh water tank gets about 1/3 full and lower, the pump will ramp up as usual, then go down to a slow idle and continues until you run more water. This only happens when the water is low. Any suggestions what is wrong? We have tried 2 new pumps and a 3rd that was a different brand,. Not the issue.

Typically you have a hose at the bottom of your freshwater tank that is connected to your water pump. It depends if you are on a hill or not how the water will get to the hose, thus get to the water pump. The only gravity fed hose is the one where you fill the tank from. Everything else is run by the pump. If your pump is continuously running. It is most likely that the tank is empty or a check valve is not working correctly. It’s my pleasure. The problem with our water is when the freshwater tank gets below say 1/2, when we use water, the pump will continue to run at low idle and does not stop until we turn the faucet on again. Then it ramps up to full idle, and then stops, but this seems like a real waste of water, while we are not connected to city water. We have changed the water pump three times so we figure it’s not that.
