This video was a relief, thank you

This video was so helpful and easy to understand. Let's say the cost of tuition is 30,000 and you get 25,000 total in financial aid. Assuming you accept all the money, can you choose where the money goes first? I'm asking because my school has a thing where if you make below a certain amount they will pay for tuition and fees after all financial aid is exhausted, but this does not cover room and board. Can I put all the money into room and board and have the school cover any remaining tuition and fees, so that i don't have to pay anything?
@TheAlmostAstrophysicist
@TheAlmostAstrophysicist 3 жыл бұрын
Glad the video helped! So it depends on where you got the financial aid from. Is it a FAFSA loan? If so, I believe you can choose the way your money is allocated! It might depend though because FAFSA directly credits your school account - you might want to reach out if it's FAFSA. Otherwise, if it's a University grant, they usually allocate it for you so they'll tell you where their grant money is going to go and they just do it for you! :)

Aw yeah, financial aid letters usually come out with admissions results or within 1-2 months after. Institutional aid is usually much larger on average, so if your son applied to private universities and requested aid, it should be good. :) Good luck!

I generally don’t want to go to school in state, or in California at the huge and overcrowded UC’s. So I’ve been looking into Private out of state universities that meet 100% of a students demonstrated financial need. However there’s one big caveat, I’m going to attend a community college for my first two years so I’ll be a transfer student. Some colleges like Boston University meet 100% of financial need for students, but only for freshman undergraduates. Would there be a big difference in the amount of financial aid offered by a private institution since I’m a transfer, and if so how would I find that out?

I can't speak for schools in your state but in my case, I am planning to attend Texas Tech because out of all the 10 schools I was interested in, they were the only ones offering to pay for my tuition as a transfer student.

So glad you find the channel helpful! No, all of these universities are need-blind so DEFINITELY apply for aid. I applied (from India so I'm international) and got 70% of my full year's tuition covered. Aid won't be the reason you get rejected from schools because being need-blind inherently means they don't know if/how much aid you'd require until you get in! :)

Hi! Hmm.. did she take out federal or private student loans, or is the financial aid a grant? If it's a grant provided by the university or a federal pell grant, it would've been directly applied to her tuition. If it's a loan, I think she'd have more discretion in how she used it - loans are also capped at 57K a year, and you can't borrow more than that for a 4 year period I believe. I'm not too sure what the situation might be, but it depends on what kind of financial aid she had (grant vs loan) and whether the spend of that financial aid was at her discretion or if it was directly applied to tuition!

@TheAlmostAstrophysicist
@TheAlmostAstrophysicist 3 жыл бұрын
Due dates for submitting FAFSA and required documentation is college specific, so you'd want to check the financial aid websites for the colleges you got into! You usually only have to submit FAFSA once before you start college, and your university will use that and give you a different aid package each year.

The letter said that I was very much qualified but they're need aware for intl students that's why they can't offer me admission and if I can demonstrate that I can pay $81,000/yr then they would consider changing my status. Like idk, I want to go to this school but the most that my family could contribute is around $80,000 for all four years. Should I even bother calling the admissions?

I actually had tuition fully covered! UChicago is around 70K a year but we paid about 20K I'd say each year for my living/dorm/food/travel expenses and I'd say it was well worth it because it feels easier to get through the door at tech companies with my degree. I also just genuinely loved the school, made lots of friends, and learned a lot! I'm lucky that my parents paid for my education though, that was a big luxury I was afforded for sure.

@TheAlmostAstrophysicist
@TheAlmostAstrophysicist 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I submitted FAFSA almost 6-7 years ago now haha so I don't remember my EFC but I actually didn't quality for any federal aid at all. I think I paid around 15K-20K a year at UChicago and the rest was covered through institutional grants. If your family's making under 125K, UChicago covers full tuition in grant form so it's essentially free. And they probably have levels above that up to a certain amount where they deem that you require a portion of everything covered. Hope this helps!
