There are more to him than you know. But most of them come from the visual storytelling and hidden storytelling. Why do you think Black Zetsu looked like ink and God Tree looked like pen? Why do you think his speech pattern is special in the manga which is Katakana? Its mentioned in the Pain Arc using Katakana Letter "Ta" that looked like 9 that, "the real one (enemy) is not amongst them". Interestingly that book is not Jiraiya's first book (Make Out Tactics). Kishimoto first manga, Karakuri (1995), was not that doing well interm of sells. Its about experimented soldiers and puppets with glaring red eyes. Naruto is his second manga which is very popular bcuz he used many "spicy" stuff. Which basically has some stuff from his older work (puppets series).
