For decades, my favorite Primarch was always Sanguinius. But then I read Angel Exterminatus, and here was this angry genius, this man with a god's mind and a boy's ego. Now *that* is an imperfect person I can relate to. I still love Sanguinius, but I understand Perturabo. This is the history of the primarch that I had wished someone would make, so thank you. I see all these memes making fun of Perturabo, but in real life, nobody seems to identify or sympathize with him. Yet, I think he's the most sympathetic of *all* of them. Maybe now, people will understand why Perturabo is 40k's greatest character. He's not the best, he's certainly not the most noble, but he's probably the most human. I've often wondered if he was inspired by Black Sabbath's Iron Man. "Nobody wants him, he just stares at the world, planning his Vengeance, that he will soon unfurl". It's probably a coincidence, but it's still very interesting. Science fiction is great for coming to grips with the tragedies that form between human kind and technology. I think players forget that behind every primarch is the archetype of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. These are profoundly unnatural people who never asked to be created and have no assurance of fitting in with human society. The ones that adjust and integrate find great purpose. The ones who were rejected use their gifts to sew untold misery among the people they were designed to serve. Perturabo, sadly, is an egregious example of the latter. The true tragedy is that it so easily could have been the opposite, had he not been so badly used by everyone he ever met, especially his own father/creator. "No one knows the things I dream" says Perturabo. "No one has ever cared enough to find out". The Emperor believed the Lord of Iron was strong enough to handle the toughest jobs. He believed the lie Perturabo was telling of his eternal strength. The truth is that he had a heart even more sensitive than his brother Sanguinius. To paraphrase Charles Bukowski: "there is a bluebird in my heart, but I keep him locked in a cage. Sometimes, at night, I let him sing. But I never let him out. Do you?". My greatest hope for 40k as a franchise is that they let their talented team of authors bring him out of the Eye of Terror and back into real space. I feel like he has immense, untapped potential and a lot more to do in this evolving setting.
@ambrosiogiovanni69522 жыл бұрын
I think what Perturabo's fans most like about him is the duality of the character. He reminds me of the great greek heroes of old. That were just men, with flaws but that could accomplish amazing things. That's his "charm". He has some really human flaws, but every single time he takes the field or even plans something himself he achieves something epic. This duality of his character is amazing, and also makes me a little worried with him coming back to the setting. I still want Perturabo to be the "hero killer", the villain that is so good at what he does that he almost always wins.
@RSBurgener2 жыл бұрын
@@ambrosiogiovanni6952 After I wrote this, I got a chance to read "Warbreed", the short story published in the limited edition printing of "Storm of Iron". It doesn't reveal that much about the Perturabo of our current timeline, but it does show that he's very much still committed to the Long War and that is is becoming active in the war against the Imperium. I am hoping that we'll see more of him in the coming years. Plus someone is going to write the story of the Iron Cage at some point, now that the Siege of Terra is coming to a close. I agree with what you say about Perturabo's duality. I never thought of it that way before, but you're exactly right. He's got two sides. One is monstrous, the other maintains some standards of behavior; and the latter makes him relatable. I don't think the authors would compromise his status as the hero killer. He sees the Imperium as his father's folly, and dreams that cannot be realized should be torn up and destroyed so that something real can be built.

Perturabo and Mortarion are really peas in a pod. They are the unwanted sons, unloved by all. Perturabo is placed in direct competition with Dorn the favoured Pratoreon of Terra, a contest he can never win. His legion is essentially just there for the purpose of fighting grinding and unglorious wars of attrition, very much a 30k Death Korps of Krieg in many ways. Except the DKOK has no issues with this whereas Perturabo knew FULL WELL that he and his sons are consistently and deliberately given the worst most grinding battles and effectively disregarded as expendables and it's much the same with the Death Guard.
@doomguy90493 жыл бұрын
The reality is like his sister said: he just liked making things hard on himself. some people are like that and have to learn everything the hard way(just like Mortarion). The way he started his legionary career with decimation among many other incidents shows that he is blinded by his prideful arrogance himself and does not appreciate or love others and so cannot really recognize the appreciation and love people show him. The Primarch novel about Magnus paints him in a different light though, I'd love to see more of that Perturabo and hope they do more Primarch novels set during the Great Crusade.

The great tragedy of perturabo. Is that he was his own worst enemy. He wanted to be loved and admired, yet he gave no love; refused to admire others for what they had done. He loved the single-minded thought of the strength of iron. Ignoring the brittleness that comes with that strength. His heart was hard and brittle. More weak from the brittleness then strength from the hardening. He hated being used, by the people of Olympia. Yet only wanted praise from them. When out done by a mortal, due to his arrogance. Instead of using that to motivate him to do better. He wasted himself and his potential by hating his opponent for beating him. His first act with his sons was to decimate them. Then cry because they didn't honor or respect him. He had no love of his brothers and yet, was annoyed that he was not honored by his brothers. The great tragedy of perurabo is that he was a child. Needing attention that he would not give. He is a fool of his own making. Treat others as you wish to be treated. You don't deserve you don't give freely.

Ive heard speculations that he only became a Demon Primarch because after his fight with Fulgrim, the amulet Perturabo was wearing drained so much life from him he was practically crippled. Or what could be even better, he could be a demon and is just removing all his chaos corruption and is just more robotic now.

Perturabo, Angron and Mortarion are the three most tragic backstories imo. Angron was not supposed to be a butcher his whole thing originally before he had the butchers nails was he felt the pain of others and was able to some degree alleviate it. Mortarion because he tries so hard to not become his foster dad and then in the end becomes his foster dad.

Honestly Mortarian is one I have mixed feelings for, his fall is without a doubt sad and disturbing(demon hood forced on him) but his relation with the Emperor and his brothers also could have been better, his legion also was put off from him, he was nearly killed by his foster father and the Emperor let him have swing at fighting him. He lost and was saved and never learned from it remaining bitter. Even when Malchador told him the Emperor’s plan for the webway he STILL went rouge. That alone shows how bad he was.

IW are my favourite legion, but I don't think people really talk much about how they and their legion tipifies the Warhammer 40k setting. The tragedy of the endless war, and the countless dead, turned on the whim of an uncaring master. How war was a true terror for them, unlike their cousins who would often relish it. Even down to the legionaires playing the tabletop in their downtime. Perturabo identified it correctly: the galaxy had no peace, and consequently no need of men devoted to it. He conducted war as one who hated it, to spite that fact alone. The true tragedy of Perturabo I think, is what the galaxy will do to men who loathe it's war.

In Perturabo we can see the difference between iron and steel. Iron is brittle on its own and oxidises easily as rust, layers and layers of rust. By adding carbon to iron, the resulting alloy is strong and resilient, and other additives, like chromium and tungsten improve it further. Beautifully narrated one of the most human takes on the 40k verse and while 'only' derived, it's still beautifully presented and even if only narrating the words of others, the emotion in the story is captured beautifully. If some of this is summed up in your words, then you ought to be proud, sir. "Raged like a child... Because he lacked the maturity that love would have brought." What a cutting insight. This story is so fraught with melancholy and heart rending sorrow and pity underneath the epic Sci fi of the setting, thank you Amber King, I've never cared that much about the Iron Warriors until I heard this. Iron within, Iron without... I can see myself clutch these words bitterly to my chest as I try in vain to find comfort in the empty solace of standing alone, lacking the courage to see that this strength is a lie whose only reward is yet more hate; and being too wounded to understand that love was the thing I truly sought, and spurned because of the vulnerability such a thing would require me to embrace.

"You are to arrogant to win people over through effort, you expect people to notice you" (this quote made me realize what kind of pathetic jackass I was and to some aspect still am, but trying to better myself) "You, who affects to despise love so much, but must crave it above all other things, are the biggest fool I've ever met" (Thinking it's better to not feel love than to be hurt because of it, just to crave it even more and be bitter when the love is not reciprocated)

I‘d like to thank all three of you and especially you, mate, that you gave Perturabo the respect which he as a written character so much deserves. For me personally, he is the best written character of them all. He is a sad and misunderstood person who just wanted some appreciation and love in this cruel und grimdark world. He‘s all about reasonable actions and emotion which are all to familiar and that in a setting where everything is totally over the top. He and his Legion are my all time favourites for sure. Thank you lads for showing, why he is the greatest of them all 😊✌🏻

Really great analysis! Having the advantage of coming out after so much of the Heresy storyline has been written, you craft a solid and canon-true take on Perturabo, where so many older videos partially base themselves on outdated opinions and preconceptions. Superb!

Great video. Perturabo was never one of the Traitors I liked till the Horus Heresy and Seige of Terra series. I still like Konrad and Magnus more but he is #3 on my list. Great character development overall.

Perturabo was always such a weird Primarch to me. I feel he suffers from being to Similar to Dorn and Ferrus Manus. He’s a mechanical body horror character in a sea of mechanical body horror character. He’s one of the few Undivided Demon Princes, but he and the Iron Warriors don’t feel Particularly interested in Chaos while characters like Curze, Horus, and Alpharius didn’t survive to reach Demon Princedom.
@TheAmberKing3 жыл бұрын
I felt like this too. After reading more of his books I now see his exterior is just a front he puts out, I now see him like the tough guy who is just broken and lonely on the inside.
@Devonator23153 жыл бұрын
Don't you think that's the exact kind of person chaos would go for to choose as an undivided champion just to twist the knife of irony in further sure alot of other characters likely deserve to reach princedom through the magnitude of their actions in the name of chaos alone but I like to think there are exceptions in which chaos gravitates to unconscious worship rather than intentional
@Ghost32103 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the undevided Daemon Primarchs hopefully will get more attention in the future, and some fitting models. I feel like Daemon Perturabo will be a iron giant with so much firepower that even Morkanauts and Gorkanauts will get envious. As well I think Curze could still be a wild card, as the fear of the Night Haunter may have had enough of a shadow in the warp to fuel a return. It wouldn't surprise me, old Warhammer novels were pretty wild, so basically anything goes and it would still be canon. Still I fear like Angron, Fulgrim, Russ and the Lion will be more likely to return first, simply because they are greater candidates to receive a new own codex. Even if I would prefer some sick unique models for Iron Warriors and Salamanders and codexes to match these awesome legions.

Just dropping another comment . I'd like to say King, this was amazing, it might even surpass your Huron Blackheart video (my favourite one). The way you convey things with subtle emotion can't be understated. The part where Petrurabo confronts his sister hit so deep man. I can't stress how good this channel is and how much your overall quality has improved. Only gripe is that you got rid of your cool intro but that's fine. Take your time because this channel is the definition of quality over quantity. Take care man.

Cold wind blows down the mountain side Chills you to the bone But nothing chills you quite as cold As a life that’s lived alone. 🎶 In a way Perterabo’s weakness was the most human of any primarch. The boy just wanted so badly for someone to love him. Just one person. A father. A brother. A sister. A friend. Anyone. The dream that tormented him wasn’t of war, it was a peaceful world full of art. I don’t think he ever really wanted to fight. Who really needs the forces of chaos when humans are fully capable of being their own worst enemies.

Perturabo haunts me. Why do I resonate with him so much. Why do I see myself in him. What is the archetype of this character, this primarch. Why was this character designed. Never seen his like elsewhere. Why the fuck was he made.
