Antique shows are happening again in airy rural places! The Petoskey, Michigan Fairgrounds fills twice a year with antiques under huge tents, and we explore my reselling booth and the rest of the outdoor show in this fun video.
I bring fresh stock to every show…my first chance to set up a show booth since March provides shoppers and viewers a chance to see my finds during the lockdown! My eye is as eclectic as my videos, so antique Satsuma vases and a Japanese ikebana bronze vase share space with Skookum dolls, race car memorabilia and the Royal Carriage from Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 Coronation.
After buying and showing off an Erphila dresser doll, I take us on a tour of the rest of this fascinating outdoor selling venue. So many vintage delights! Victorian cast iron garden ware and one-of-a-kind hand hewn primitive furniture attract one sort of collector, while kitschy 1970s lamps and a 4’ beer bottle entice a different crowd.
Among the finds are fun facts and important things for resellers and collectors to know. How do you tell a new burl table from vintage? What is a “Kentiki” tumbler? What popular reselling reality show overly inflates its values? We tell all as we show real examples to help interpret the past-and help you avoid mistakes in the present.
Here are some more of the items we see along the way in this tour:
Fox print, Peter Marsh lamp, Fenton lamp, Bill Elliott signature, Native American beadwork, school map, pre-Columbian jaguar effigy vessel, Wash-ette, Tom’s store jar, Starburst candlesticks, Wedgwood tea set, Lenox princesses, Vernon Kilns, corbels, lawn jockeys, computing scale, nurse sign, felt pennant, stamp set, portrait chair, Hudson’s Bay robes, Squash Blossom jewelry, turquoise and sterling concho belts, onion bin, forestry sign, taxidermy, antlers, Paul Marshall mirror, folk art, crocks, truck scale, carnival glass swung vases, glass birds, 1970s furnishings, reflector road sign, lunchboxes, childrens enamel top tables, shaving stand, modernist sculpture, alarm clocks, Chicken sign, antique advertising, barrister’s bookcase, anthurium canisters, crucifix, slag glass window, breweriana, etc.

I used to do the markets in Florida up until 2003. The mid 1990s were the best time to do them in my opinion. I did Renniger's Extravaganza and monthly fairs. The Winter show at the Convention Center in Miami Beach when Lou Baron ran it. Webster's, Wagon Wheel, the Drive in Market in Pinellas County, Don Scotts and Lakewood in Atlanta. Piccadilly in West Palm Beach. They were a lot of fun and I really miss doing them. I can't get over how much the crowds and the prices have dropped off though.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 3 жыл бұрын
It's true, a lot of those are gone now (including Wagon Wheel, it closed due to covid and announced it will not reopen). The Baby Boomers and their parents were so much of the dealer base, my generation (49 million) is so small compared to those 100 million people that it's going to take awhile to regenerate

The old Pawn conchos were gorgeous. I'm from the SW. I had Rhode-island reds when I was in my 20's and they were the best layers. Just remember to put chicken wire underneath if you have a chicken coup so nothing can dig underneath and get your hens. I had mine for around 10 years. I had a variety, exotic, little banty hens, it was great!

OMG!! I was just researching chickens!!! They are such fun! Summer Rayne, the plant guru, had a pet chicken that roosted on her bedroom door every night!! She dearly loved that bird. Then Cam of Dixie Cryptid was talking about all of his chickens--so they definitely become pets. I was shocked in learning about their personalities and some are sooo pretty. I was quite taken with them!! So definitely get some!!! You’ll have fun chasing them around! When you get them, you will have to make a video!! How fun!!!!

I thought having chickens would be fun but I think I need a more rural locale! I’ve known several people who have had chickens and they loved them! And they always had plenty of eggs to give to their friends! There’s such a difference in fresh eggs!! Deviled eggs are one of my fave foods! One evening I was watching Cam talking about his chickens and he was raving about his rooster. He said how protective he was over the chickens. He said one day a hawk was circling and it tried grabbing a chicken when the rooster went nuts on the hawk! And the hawk flew away!! The rooster saved the day!! How interesting!! You’ll have to do a video on chicken raising with your coop and chickens!! That’ll be fun and different!

Hiya George, your booth is lovely, one that would’ve pulled me in for sure! At 28:36 that Art Deco lamp was a steal, gimme😆! So many treasures, wish they’d open back up here in NY (possibly upstate is open, I’m too close to city limits) we always had fun flea mkts, antique shows in summer🙁. I’ve had that Laugh-In bin since about ‘80, got for a quarter at a church sale & yep I’m old enough to recall watching it 1st time around, so silly but fun! Thanks for showing us your lovely booth, all the other goodies... need a road trip but not happy about our stupid governor setting up checkpoints to get back in state😡. Have a lovely week & I hope you did well at the show! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️PS every time I hear “Vintage & Vinyl” I think of my 1st B&M shop in Greenwich Village which was called that!

Frame 31:37 Those colored metal cups (tin, Alum.?), My Grandmother had some. She happily pour me orange juice in the mornings in them, Could barely drink it cause of the sharp metallic taste they had.

I never have seen a Peter Marsh lamp before. It was the chunky glass that threw me. I would have searched every Arts & Crafts lighting manufacturer for this one. To find out this is MCM is unique. I never have seen anyone trying to reinterpret the Arts & Crafts movement.

Yes, agreed! They were very popular in California and I remember them from childhood in San Diego, otherwise I would've presumed a half-century older myself.

🦋 I bought a Lenox snow queen, mail order way back when, and it was NOT the one you showed. Can’t remember how much I paid but I know it was expensive for the 1980’s. When it arrived, right way, I saw the underglaze was painted very sloppily. Fortunately I was able to return it for full refund. ✌🏽

Thanks! That's fun, the Barrel Line was what grew them from making cute figures to being a large ceramics powerhouse...the cookie jar was featured on the Dick Van Dyke show and that alone helped sell 50000 units! The brown rubbed glaze didn't give it the strength of an enamel glaze, so it tended to wear and chip, that's why they're not so common in good shape now

OMG!!! I have fallen in love with the Fenton blue satin glass!!!!! Do you still have that lamp!???!! How much is it??? I’m selling a huge wardrobe of clothes on Poshmark and I have a hard time listing...if I could possibly get that lamp...well, let’s just say I’m newly inspired!!! I haven’t seen a lamp like that anywhere and I’d rather buy from you than someone I don’t know on EBay!!! I also liked the pink and blue plate with the pink bird. Do you still have that??? I’m going to spend the next week listing my butt off!!!! Probably about 7 months ago I started watching Jocelyn and I was fine til she came up with a Fenton small vase. So I dashed over to a local antique shop. I found three pieces and my collection was born! So you see, I NEED that lamp!!! I sure hope you have it somewhere!! Thanks!! If you prefer, my email is my name plus eleven at gmail. Again, thanks!!

Any news on the Custer’s Spokane show(s) this year? Another huge show, Farm Chicks, is now scheduled for June 2021. They tried to move it from this June to August, but we are still in the thick of COVID here. Not as bad as Seattle, but still quite severe.

The Antique Nomad - Probably depends on how crowded Custer’s gets. The Farm Chicks show is typically packed, with a long line to get in, and curated vendors are packed shoulder to shoulder in all the bays, so it’s just not an option.

Oh, thank you! I will tell my mother. I believe they belonged to her mother or grandmother, but she doesn't know very much about them. Now at least we can put a name and a maker to them. Several years ago my parents tried to identify all of their "treasures" for the benefit of me and my brother (since they're in their 70s now), but it's amazing how many things we have that we love and yet we may know very little about--especially since my mother lost her mother fairly young. All that familial knowledge gets lost as well.

There may still be the antique show in Tri-Cities in March. Other than that, there's a bunch of flea markets and swap meets with a fair antique representation in Tri-Cities. Yakima doesn't have a show anymore.
