This is a wonderful story. You did a good job in tilling it. I was married to a common drunk. It didn't start out that way. He just started out drinking a little more each time until he was staying mostly drunk. The last time I talked to him was on Halloween morning of 1975. I handed him the lunch he asked me to pack for him, he took it, kissed me, and walked out the door. I thought he was going to work. Later in the day, I took the trash out to the big metal can. When I opened that can I found the packed lunch I had made for him laying on top of the other trash. Four days later he had not called or came back to our home. I knew he would be coming home drunk after he ran out of money and could walk and drive again. I packed what I could for the children and myself; and, we traveled to my parents home in Kentucky (on Greyhound buses). My husband told me many times, "I can quit anytime I want to." It was clear to me (when I found that wasted lunch in the trash) that he was never going to quit drinking. If I wanted both of our children to have a better life, I had to take them and leave. I even had to resort to hiding all three of us in another state (West Virginia). I was the first of his five wives. He was a mean, nasty, dangerous drunk; but, he was a super nice person when he was clean and sober.

I feel your pain dear. My sisters both married alcoholics. I saw all they went through. One put her husband out finally. He eventually turned his life around thru GOD and AA. My other sister stayed with hers, a mean drunk until he died from the drinking. Wish I could hug you like I did my sister's. GOD bless and prosper you and your family.

Praise God, this story was my mama and daddy's story. My daddy drank so bad he was on skid row selling his blood for whiskey and wine. My mama had to get on welfare for quite along time. I remember I was so scared somebody at school would find out. But God and with my mama's love delivered my daddy from drinking. Us kids was so happy. And our Prayers had been answered. Our Daddy was back home with us, never to leave to leave again. Praise God. Til he went to heaven and my sweet little mama went 5 years later.❤❤❤❤❤❤

I had a truly beloved boyfriend who was the love of my life, but he was a roaring drunk and he was really a demon when drunk. He eventually drowned in a local river when drunk once again. I still miss him. :(( But he's at peace, finally! He was incredibly handsome, kind, intelligent and could do just about anything he put his hands to. Such talent but such tragedy!

Would love to see your take on the siege/battle of Bryan Station Springs just outside Lexington, Kentucky. My Mamaw Grace White told basically the same story as can be found EXCEPT it was the women who elected to continue trips to the Spring so the enemies would not realize those within knew they were surrounded with ever increasing hostiles. Though heavily wooded and overgrown today, the spring still runs and remnants of the only monument for women, dedicated by women exists.

great story JD, I wish every alcoholic story ended up that well! . I bore it for 23 years, but like this man, mine was mean as a snake when he was drinking. The opposite of everything he was sober. I loved him with all my heart and i still do. But I had sons coming up on their teens years , I couldn't keep his drinking a secret anymore because they were older. I didn't want them having to endure what I did for so long. I also wanted them to grow up to be good husbands who weren't alcoholics, He did eventually get sober when his gout got so bad from drinking, so about 10 more years. I never remarried, I did mean my vows before God, I think I did the right thing but, who can be sure. I was very ill at the time I made the decision, I just had to try and keep things at home as peaceful as it could be.

Sadly a lot of Christian folks don't persevere in resisting temptation. Apparently they don't realize, Jesus life, death and Resurrection took away the power of sin. We continue to live our lives as if it weren't so. But, ss Paul said: "we are no longer slaves of sin." also: "whatever we give ourselves over to becomes our master." So if we don't act like sin is still our Master; it won't be. It all comes down to whom do we love Jesus or ourselves and our sinful desires? I don't speak theoretically. I'm 75 years old and I've been battling a particular sin all my life. And I'm now having power over it because I have committed myself to loving the Lord more than myself and my sinful desires. Glory, honor, praise and thanksgiving to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Redemption stories always welcome. Sometimes patience and forbearance do work; sometimes they don't though; and it's important to know when to turn Mother's picture to the wall and get out. On the brighter side, the husband of a friend of mine was a lifelong alcoholic. But when he met her, not trusting himself to quit, he used that medicine that guarantees gastric results if you do drink at all. And that's how he got a grip on the problem. I've visited their home for a week at a time. He keeps liquor in the house and sometimes will offer me a bit of the finest sipping whiskey I ever had. Sometimes he'll even join me. But he seldom does and never more than a few sips. The love of his wife is really what saved him. They're such a beautiful couple.

If that old boy doesn't think the grace of God is what helped him love his wife and overcome drinking; he doesn't understand how the grace and mercy of God works. According to the bible, the grace and mercy of God; is what enables even unbelievers, to do good.

You sound like a true Christian. I wish you would raise your voice and reinforce the idea that there are real practicing Christians that add so much goodness to this existence and that there are those who call themselves Christians but do not live by the grace of God, who cherry-pick the Bible rather than studying it, who do not think the Ten Commandments apply to them. Who, if Jesus knocked on their door, would turn Him away for not being white, for not being willing to hate anyone not like them. I believe you outnumber these fake Christians and your collective voices would be nothing less than transformative.

There are some men and women that can have a social drink 2.Maybe three and they stopped but there are more that can't. I quit drinking about 6 years ago.Lost a bunch of puffy weight and don't miss it at all but sometimes most times that doesn't happen to people they cannot quit. I'm a bartender and I know this for a fact.

That's funny showing Deadwood, SD in the background. Pretty far away from Appalachians.
