The night before my mama passed, she hadn't said an intelligent word in several days, I told her it was OK for her to go be with my dad and all the others. She said, "ok, I'll go tomorrow." The next morning about 10 am, she took her last breath as I held her hand. She had been talking to my dad, her mama and a little girl we think was her last sister who was still born. She's in heaven with them all now.

Yes, when my husband had been the hospital 10 days the nurse called me in. I was sitting there holding his hand and I said , it’s ok you can go be with your mom and dad now and he went. I believe he was half way there but didn’t want to leave us alone . We are all on our own we just don’t always see it.

As a hospice woker for over 15 years, I can attest that there are indeed signs. Hearing and seeing things nobody else can, moments of total clarity for those with dementia , as well as a "surge" of strength (as if the person was never ill) Keep your eyes, ears, and mind open. You will see the signs also

This happened to my uncle Harold. He came in from outside and told his wife that he heard the most beautiful music. He said that must be what heaven sounds like. He laid down for a nap and never woke up again. Well he didn’t wake up in this world. I enjoyed the story. Thanks.

On June 23, 1983 my grandmother called me to tell two mourning doves had flown into a window pane at the same time. Long story short, my dad, age 39, who was working out of state, was killed in an accident just after midnight of the 23rd/24th. The whole family gathered at my grandparent’s home, trying to console each other. The afternoon of the 24th, the phone rang. My great-grandpa’s baby sister had died that morning, same day as my dad. That was such a hard time. Their funerals were the same day, different places. My grandma and great-grandma swore by these signs. Years later, my grandpa was the only one of the elders alive. One Sunday at church, we made plans to meet at his house and play cards. However, he told me that Sunday would be his last Sunday. It was. He passed that afternoon. I am a believer in signs.

As young newlyweds we lived briefly with my husbands aunt. We were always very close. When she was in the hospital the last time, I went to see her. As I was rubbing one foot and her dil the other she told us Betty was calling her. Betty had been my mil who passed 10 years before. She saw her sister, brother, father, and mother and spoke to them like we were sitting in her home. She passed very peacefully that night.

Twice in my life I heard the most beautiful singing and music, music I knew wasn't from earth, but of the Kingdom of Heaven. The 1st time I was laying on my den couch when it was coming from the ceiling, and the 2nd time I was outside on my icy patio on a clear night, hadn't walked out there but a minute and it began, beautiful instruments and singing, and I immediately went to my knees and started praising God and a praying. God bless you friend; you make awesome videos that have me wishing for the old paths.

My ancestors came from Scotland, England, and Ireland. My Mama told me a lot of the signs she'd learned from her own ancestors. One of these was that a live bird in the house is an omen of death. One afternoon I was sitting in the den when a bird threw itself against the storm door; it flapped desperately to get inside and I knew something was wrong. The next day I learned that a cousin about 50 miles away had been killed in a wreck caused by a drunk driver. Her death was about the same time as the bird's appearance. I'll always remember the things Mom told me. I believe them. Don't sing before breakfast. Never rock a rocking chair with nobody in it. I'll always remember the old sayings Mom told me, beliefs that come from hundreds of years ago.

I've seen too much death and loss in my life. Some have come with signs, but most don't, in my experience. As much as I fear death (mostly leaving her and not having my daughter in Heaven one day... all earthly feelings), I pray this is the way to go. To feel that peace and warmth, and rejoice in the beauty of those signs before passing peacefully in my sleep. Great story, JD. You really know how to tug at those heart strings!

My mama went on to be with the Lord last year. She was sick but she was in her right mind. But she was seein the other side. Some of the visitors thought she was "out of it " but she wasn't. IF you listened to her words it was perfectly sensible. She saw her daddy coming to get her. She saw her brother who went before her. And she saw a great grandchild who died at birth. People need to pay attention. There is a next life.

I love all your stories, but this one is a favourite! Gentle signs of impending death are common in Fairy Folklore, with Banshee of course, but also the visitation of birds and other animals like foxes and even deer who appear at the house or window of a person soon to pass. The sound of beautiful music and bells is common too. I believe these gestures from the other side are a kindness, done to prepare a person, and their loved ones, of what is to come. Thank you so much for sharing these stories. Sending love from Australia.

As to approaching death signs, people used to be a lot more in touch with such things before modern life came between us. There are many kids growing up recently who've never seen death at all except maybe for a goldfish or hamster if that. Now I know some folkways were taken much too far, like burying a dishrag under the back steps to keep your mil away. Trust me, that one doesn't work. But many of those beliefs came from generations of close observation and were based on science whether people called it that or not. Like using tobacco paste on wounds, etc.

I grew up in the old ways of our elders. Since I was raised by my Granny. She was born in the 20's an her mother in 1890 so I blessed to see an hear the stories from Great Gma. One in particular stands out when Granny was a girl in Pawnee, Ok. She an Great Gma an Gpa were headed to Great Great Gma"s in CoalCity (RockyTop) Tnn. back then they had a old dairy farm truck an my Great Pa converted it to mobile house back then so they could follow the work trail an have a place to live. One evening Gpa kept onseeing his elders in the corner of his eyes his daddy an mom an Grmpa..but that couldnt be since they all had passed in the Early 1900's. My Great GPA was almost 20 plus yrs older then my Great Gma. an wasnt in the best of health compared to GreatGma . You see Great Gmpa served with the Rough Riders an then Ww1 so his lungs wernt the best an was always coughing like an OlCoalminer. One night Great Gmpa had a coughing fit on night an Great Gma usually had apple chip smoke to help him but this time it didn't...His lings gave away an he passed that night. But before he passed he swore up an down he heard sweet music being hummed an the smell of honey suckle. My Great Granny told this story back in the 1980 before she had passed in 81. She lived a hard life an was tough as nails. They burried Great Gpa at Nickajack at the Border of Tenn/Georgia/Bama border known as the Line Cemetery. As a boy we go to Grannys house an stay a spell an my kin an I would play in this Old Dairy Truck an campout over the summer. Watching the FireFlies an Catching Catfish by the moon light. My Gma inherited the prop an kept it as is with Ponds an the Pawpaw Trees an Pears an my favorite the Biggest Persimmons anyone could see. Gma kepted an herb garden for medicine an such an in the middle of the herbs was a Apple Tree, it was the punniest an scraggliest fruit tree ever but my Gma insisted that we never touch that tree or trim it or nothing. Cause gma put a bench under that tree an would sit there an pray an talk to Great Gma an Great GrPa there. That is where we found her. One evening she was outhhere meditating an passed..she went peacefully with a picture of her parents in a locket in her hand. We had Grma cremated an we placed her under that Ol Apple Tree an put the locket with her. Now my mom owns the property an we sit there an meditate an pray. Hoping one day I can smell honey suckle an hear that familiar humming that my elders hummed..

Delsie was lucky to get to pass in her sleep, knowing that her sister loved her. She didn't have to suffer from pain and worries. Most of us will not get to leave this life so easily. I hope Mary didn't suffer when her time came. It may not have been easy for Mary to learn to live alone. Did Susan take Mary into her home? It takes time to learn how to live alone. It gets hard to remember what day, week, ir year it is (if you don't keep a journal). It's easy to get depressed. Keeping a food journal (with the time of day you took your pills, what you ate and when) makes a big difference. It gives you something to answer questions with.

Used to be custom in much of rural & small town America to put undies inside pillow cases on the line so nobody could see those 'unmentionables'. My grandma never set foot in Appalachia, but she would've switched me if I hung out undies for all to see.

I know this to be true first hand. My husband's uncle we lived with told me one morning to help him get cleaned up and to go get the neighbors to take him to the hospital. He stopped in the doorway and looked back and I asked him what is it? He said just looking for the last time I said don't talk like that and he passed that night. The other time I was visiting my sister and got up that morning and told her to call about granny something was wrong. She thought I was crazy but I kept on until she did. Our grandmother was in the hospital and we were told to come asap I got to see her one hr before she passed. Lord how I miss her 😢

Well working the gate a car pulled in from the main road at one AM in order to enter the Deep Lake Camp Ground, as the ranger was asking the usual questions a girl siting in the back seat started screaming take me home, take me home my husband is dead . Early the next morning it was learned that indeed her husband was killed in a car accident at the very time she started screaming.
