It's possible he (mohammed) heard stories from the bible from heretical Christians (like Jehovah witnesses of today) in his time who did not believe jesus was God or the second person of the God head or in jesus the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form . The book by Reynolds, "The Quran and the Bible", is an excellent read as it shows where the Quran borrows its stories from. It goes through the entire Quran and gives references to the original sources. Everyone (especially Muslims) should read it. Of course Muslim dismiss all previous sources as simply the "correct" parts of previous revelations that the Quran quotes, they don't care about that fact that all religions are based on older myths and legends.

This idea that because Mohammad couldn't read or write, he couldn't have possibly fabricated the Quran, is totally asinine! And can easily be torn apart! The Australian aborigines and native Americans of north America, who never had any history of reading or writing? Orally passed down countless, traditions, history, and stories, from generation to generation, for thousands of years! The Incan, Aztec, Olmec, Mayan, and numerous other civilizations of central and south America, built gigantic cities, containing vast monuments, with complex infrastructure, without ever having a written language! So the idea that Mohammad couldn't have recited verses he created, and stories which had been told to him or he'd heard elsewhere? To various scribes he had access to? Is totally absurd! Especially when the Quran was recited in bits over many years? All he had to do was here a tale from someone, and then relay that to someone who could write it down and add it to his book? simple! As for the verses he concocted himself? He could just say whatever he liked, at any time? Which explains why the Quran is filled with so much nonsense!
