The 3 month no use idea is not applicable in a 4 season climate or for seasonal decorations. You could use a longer timeframe (ie a year) for those

This was so helpful! I’ve watched so many decluttering videos but I wanted to understand why it’s so hard for me to let go of things. I love the “I can always buy it again!” So simple, yet I never thought of it that way.

If I say I can buy it again~ 2 problems with that for me... 1. It will be of lesser quality & cost more than it did when I first purchased it & 2. If I already own it thinking I can always buy it again what's the point to sell, donate, or toss it? The excitement returns to me when I use, see or wear the item. Guess I'm just weird. Thanks for your video.

My daughters have told me that there is nothing in my house they will keep if I pass away! It makes me sad but I remember clearing my parents and grandparents houses and to be honest the only things I kept were photographs and the odd reminders of their lives.

Watching videos like this helps me feel less guilty about getting rid of gifts, especially from those who know I don’t like gifts. For my wedding I stressed the fact that no gifts were wanted and of course an aunt gave me a big engraved box with a bible passed down from my grandmothers wedding. My grandmothers marriage ended in divorce so this really had no meaning to me at all. I gave it to my mother as it held more meaning to her. As for the box it was big and not something that I would display in my home so I gave it to a friend. I still feel resentment toward the aunt that gave it to me knowing how I feel about holding on to things and being so minimal … it’s hard with family who do not understand minimalism

No way, I feel worry that I am letting something go that I will need and worry about having anxiety about this possible time I knew I needed it and let it go. I mean how many times have I lost something and wanted it back! Who cares about guilt...bye Felicia to that guilt. That's easy.

I feel for minimalists that get a lot of gifts or presents, such as if they are a school teacher. A friend gave me a nice travel crossbody purse that I don't really like. I can't donate it because she might ask about it, and I don't want to lie or tell her that I donated it. Normally, if there's a big life event, I ask people NOT to get me any presents, and that includes live plants. If they want to take me to lunch, that's fine, but I don't want any items that I have to store someplace and then worry about decluttering.

I totally thought the baseball bat story was going to have a different ending. "I kept that bat in the trunk of my car... the car that I decluttered... I didn't look at this bat for years... until one day, in the Wal-Mart parking lot, some guy backs into me, but doesn't apologize... so I go to my trunk... I get the bat..."

sentimental stuff is the most difficult for me. I went a route that I think many folks do. 1 I got rid of trash first. I never was like a TV reality show level Hoarder, but definitely the average American level hoarder. May be even a little worse than average, but definitely bad enough that I did absolutely have some trash mixed in with my stuff at the darkest point in my life. Second, I got rid of everything that I knew I would never use, I did not like having and was just in the way. This gave me enough breathing room to start questioning that which was left. I have over the last several years very slowly reduced my possessions kind of like going on a very slow diet. Just like diet and exercise, I eventually started kind of sculpting my life. But I still have that stubborn belly fat - Excessive sentimental junk. I almost see it exactly like that. I see being minimal like being physically fit. Right now, it is like I am kind of in shape, but would like to be more like an athlete, and for that I think I will need to really work on reducing the quantity of my sentimental stuff.

STOP If I could always buy it again, I’d be able to let it go- but I can’t even find this quality of item available if I did have 86% more to spend on a lower quality replacement due to inflation. This is so dumb.

It's really for your brain to accept getting rid of stuff you honestly do not need anymore. That's how I dealt with giving away all the children's books I gave away (kept many because I'm not a minimalist 😂).

Wrong. I have had things that I hadn't used in a couple of years and started using them again (things worth 100's of dollars). Although, in all fairness, not all advice is going to resonate the same with everyone. The rest of what he said has been said previously by others many, many times in books articles, videos, and podcasts. IMHO He seems like a sincere and genuine enough guy, but nothing new here, folks. I love gifts but most of the gifts are something l want or need. WHY YOU SAY because they asked me what is the item l needed or wanted for a gift [like favourite food that l love to eat, money that l put away for a larger purchase item etc.] WE SHOULD BE TRUTHFUL and honest…if everyone took the time to find out what your family member or friend wanted or need WE would not support all the land fields, value villages, and stores by purchasing things [STUFF] that is not wanted or needed [ wasteful shopping ] not to mention the time wasted or wrapping it up this paper is also wasteful 😢
