Perfect comparison. Both are outstanding paints, you can clearly see the professional line is more vibrant and smooth but the student line gives you really good colors for not so much money, therefore is a great option

Thanks so much for this comparison! I just bought the Cotman set of 45. :) I was a reading lot of negativity on the Cotman set on Reddit and was doubting my purchase but your amazing owl shows me its potential. A great artist can always make it work! Also I really like the palette that comes with it and plan to use it in the long term haha.

I bought professional Winsor Newton half pan watercolors, but there is room for more paints and I was thinking should I mix things up and order a few cotman half pans or fully keep it professional. This video helped me see that some of the colors look almost the same, but in some of them there is a huge difference, so thank you!

Every time I'm at the art store I ask myself if the more expensive paints are worth it. The only other thing I wish I could see is a lightfast test (maybe putting the paper in the window for a few weeks and seeing the fade on each?). Thanks so much for showing these differences!

I have been in watercolors since 2009 after spending over 20 years in Acrylics and about 6 years in Oils (which was my starting point back in late 1970's)... Ans since 2009 I have been a fan of Winsor and Newton art supplies... I started with the Cotman series and then move to the Professional ones; but still use Cotman as my prefer one for journals watercolors. And your review is actually splendid...

Great review... I used Cotman for many years and still do for teaching and my own field sketch palette. I tend to buy only tube colours now and re fill any pans. The 21ml tubes, are great value and seem better quality than some of the Chinese made Cotman pans... don't know why! Some of the pan colours I have bought felt gritty on the palette and you could feel the slight abrasive texture if you ran your finger over the colour when it had dried on the paper - I have not had that with the tubes. Though I mainly paint with artist watercolours now, I have no qualms about mix and matching colours I like. WN Professional artist grade watercolour are more finely milled and you do notice more transparency in some colours like yellow ochre compared to the Cotman. One I can't live without is Cotman Cerulean Hue - I find it better behaved than genuine PB35 Cerulean and way cheaper - It mixes better, doesn't flocculate and is great for skies or cool shadow - Mix it with a little Ultramarine and you have a perfect Cobalt blue hue or add a little light red and you have pale greys for cloud shadow. It's a permanent part of my colour palette and I wouldn't swap it for anything. I have tried other artist grade - phthalo based Cerulean hues but keep coming back to the Cotman.

Thank you Peter! Its really interesting to hear your thoughts on tubes vs pans- I have recently read that the formulation of pans and tubes is different and each has its pros and cons - I may steer towards refilling the pans with tube paint as I use these up- I also really appreciate the advice re the Cotman Cerulean Hue- will definitely try that out!

What about the longevity of the paints? By which I mean both the 'light fastness' (degradation by UV Light over time) and the longevity of the paints themselves. I have an old set of professional half pans that must be thirty years old. They're still moist and I can still 'activate' them with a splash of water. I'm wondering if the Cotman range would last as long...

Great review! I’ve had a small cotman set for years that I only recently started getting good use out of so I was curious how the professional set compared. I’m a digital artist but I do a lot of ink and watercolor sketches, and while the professional set looks fantastic I don’t think the price is justified for loose sketching! The cotman set is great for throwing a splash of color onto something.

Love the own!!!! So nice. and thank you for the very nice video. I think they put the yellow ochre in because a lot of people seem to use it. I guess they took the most popular ones. A lot of beginners (me included) are a bit scared to use a certain colour if it really pops and you don't yet know where to put it. I started with the Cotman series. I LOVE them. But I decided to slowly upgrade. I use the tubes and make my own colour palette and it gives me the option to buy an empty mixing palette that is as big or small as I like. I got my first Cotman water colours as a small pan palette with 12 colours. I then bought an empty tin to add pans into and bought some already filled pans and some empty ones to use the tubes for the empty ones. Yesterday I bought my first 2 (tiny!) tubes of professional paint. I want to gather a good range of colours first , then use my new palette for the pro paints only. Will keep using the Cotman for practise and also for anything that is just for fun. Although I don't plan on going into paid art, I'd use the pro series for anything I would make especially for someone.

I just received the professional set today. Right away I was disappointed when doing the swatches. Prussian Blue & Viridian, are pastel instead of deep rich bright colors. Also as you mentioned there is no dark brown. Some of the paints have an almost gel like texture which I see a lot in lower end watercolors. A lot of the browns in this set have that gel like feel and I just couldn’t get the colors to show any depth. I have almost every brand watercolor there is and I have to say Schminke, Mission Gold, Danial Smith & White Nights are so much nicer rich and vibrant.

I get what you're saying!- I do have a few of the tubes of Winsor and Newton which I think seem to have richer pigments but I always end up going back to Schminke or my Mission Gold set. @@chyanneperez1301 i got Schmincke watercolors for my Birthday. They are the best watercolors and, because they are a german brand, always high quality. They also overfill the tubes sometimes, that means you get more paint than you pay for. And the tin case the colours comes with has a lot of mixing areas. The also have a selection of over 140 colours, that is a lot. Schmincke watercolors have only one flaw, one of their manny yellow tones can't get mixed well whit one of their manny purple tones. It looks weird. But when do you even mix these colours in the first place? 🥴 ( I forgot the names of the colours ) Schminke is really expensive but you absolutely get what you pay for. Winsor and Newton on the other hand is good for sketches and doodles, yknow stuff where you kinda waste paint. And they are super good for travelling and mostly designed for exactly that.

*sigh* I feel a little bit disappointed after watching the video. I am from Argentina, yesterday I payed for the cotman set $3000 pesos (or €48/£43) and now I get to know that they're the cheapest tool even though it's Winsor and Newton. They were expensive as hell if we talk about pesos, so I feel sad to be honest. And altough practice and hard work are heavier than tools lets say, I feel terrible; Shop sellers here believe that they are selling you the ultimate profesional set and they know nothing. Much less I do! Gosh. So much money inverted in something that is ment for students and there are Much better things. I feel so fooled. RATS!! I will try my best with my set but still... gosh.
@SarahNewburyArt5 жыл бұрын
Hi Anahi! Don't feel sad, many artists use the cotman sets and love them! Yes, they are advertised here as student grade paints not professional- but that's not to say they aren't still really good. Get some good quality paper if you can that's 100% cotton -as this makes more of a difference ( in my opinion!), to your painting than the paints themselves. Use the cotman set you've got and enjoy them. You can always replace them with higher grade paints if you want to, once these have run out. 😀

Cotman is fine. It's not as vibrant but workable for sure. Stunning owl.

How about reeves?
@SarahNewburyArt4 жыл бұрын
My very first watercolour palette was a Reeves one but in my opinion, the cotman watercolours are more pigmented and perform far better. The Reeves palette I had was a set of 12 pans and I seem to remember them being quite chalky?😊

The cotman set is more ment for students therefore a wider range of pigments such as Indian Red. The professional set is for professionals who know colour theory and can make MOST of the color wheel with just the primary plus black, so everything else is like a convenient bonus. Most professionals don't need more then 12 premade colours to work with. They're just there for convenience.

Honestly there isnt much difference apart from the professional set has more pigment. With the Cotman set they are completely fine and you can get the same pigment depending on how much water you use or how many layers you use.

Pigment in professional is different than in Cotmans. Looks the same but isn't and if you paint something in Cotmans and hang on your wall, after few months you will be disappointed how your colours look like.

I use both qualities depending on what I'm painting. The Cotman are good but lack strong colour intensity so if I'm painting an English landscape I'm more likely to use Cotman, if it's a Mediterranean scene I'd use the Professional. Sometimes I'll paint the sky and distance in Cotman and the foreground in Professional that works well.
