@michael p Flash? No, I have the A7RII for that, but I don't use flash much anyway. EVF lag? No, never noticed it, even at high speed airshows and motorcycle races at 20 fps all day. My panning technique must compensate for it. UHS1? Save a RAW to slot 1 and JPEG to slot 2, which I would do regardless. Grip? No, small hands. $1500 extra? Not worth it for me, but I can see a professional sports photographers could justify it.

Maybe in 5 or 10 years you can get it used within your budget. That is if you do something that can´t be done otherwise. For example with the things I do, I don´t need the insane framerate of this cam, so I would stick with a model that does the things I can use, no matter if I can afford the more advanced model. On the other hand, If you really need these advanced abilities because it helps or enables you in what you are doing, you´d probably buy it, even if it is more than your budget allows. And there is one more thing. Maybe you need this camera for a job that cant be done with your gear. It is good to know there is something out there you can use to get it. So you just might rent the camera for that day or you might know someone who has it, to switch cameras for one day.

As a Sports Photographers, this is EXACTLY what we wanted. The voice memo, the faster processor rather than bigger sensor is smart for us. The connectivity improvements are great and spot on, FTP will now not be a problem at all. The anti-flicker handling is also important and THANK YOU for being able to change colour of the focus brackets!!!. The reason for using the “old” viewfinder, for sports photographer other things are more important I guess… With the originally a9 the colleagues with Canon and Nikon thought that camera is “cheating” but they did not want to move over to a9 due to the things I mentioned above… Now there is absolutely no reason to not move over to Sony if you can afford it…
@sociableswede6322

To To clarify: I think that the reason for sticking to old Canon and Nikon cameras is not necessarily the price of the body, it is the price of buying new lenses… The fact that we do not work in a high income area and also that for many of us we do not own the equipment, our employers do, this might also make the change slower…

Here are some reasons.... #1. How fast does it playback a file at 100% magnified view, and how fast will the next file display? (VERY SLOW on R2. How much has memory improved? Speed comparison?) #2. Deal breaker; Can we finally change settings like aperture or shutter speed while the camera is "busy" buffering? #3. Electronics. I still have issues with the 55/F1.8 doing continuous AF while I have Single shot selected. Issues like this still around. Have the electronic bugs been fixed? #4 Have they improved the USB and HDMI ports? Even using the cord manager and being careful, with little use I had my USB port stop working. Sent in for pricey repair. #5 have they improved the memory card slot and door? Sounds like it. I had to have mine repaired. #6. Is the card reader less picky? Often I have to reinsert. Also, the write folders are CRAP. Why cant it be simple and logical folder structure? #7. Any menu improvements? I think not. Just good customization. #8. Very important; can we shoot in 30, 40, or 50mpixel raw size in FF mode? Selectable resolution. Sounds simple enough, but?? #9. Can we magnify focus when in Auto focus mode? Are other lens restrictions removed? Contrary to how great the camera is, these are just amateur toy like restrictions.

@@philindeblanc He's talking for sports photographers, several of the points you mentioned have absolutely no use for sports photography, especially the #8: #1: the CPU was improved and that will make playback faster, on R2 you have more MP and a slow CPU, that's why it's slow. #2, #3: no idea, but you don't know either, so ... what's your point again? #4: well, there is now USB-C #5, #6: again, no idea, so we must wait for impressions, never had a problem myself with the card though. #7: unimportant for pro sports photographers again, they won't have time to go to the menu, so everything is customized, and customization is amazing on the A9 #8: "very important" 30, 40, 50mp raw size? Huh actually it's not important at all to sports shooters, they are fine with a smaller size, as long as the speed is there. #9: no idea.

The A9 ii seems to be a (mostly) firmware update in an A7R iv body! I honestly think Nikon & Canon will breathe a sigh of relief given that they will rlease their flagship DSLR's primed & ready to go for the 2020 Olympics. I think most press photographers will stick with Canon & Nikon for that for several reasons; durability & build quality, legacy lens line-up, No percieved shutter/EVF lag, no overheating, better battery life, No buffering-out when doing continuous bursts, no banding/artefacts when using electronic shutter etc.

I wish that users wouldn’t insist that a still photography camera had video cutting edge features. I don’t shoot video, I don’t understand how to shoot video, and I don’t want to shoot video. What I want is a “perfect” still camera not dragged down by video requirements. I say if you want perfect video buy a video camera. From the description of the a7II, it seems that Sony RIGHTLY chose to keep it a photo camera that can be used for some video rather than the perfect video camera that can be used for some still photography.

I get why they made the a9II what it is, but for my needs it's a bit of a miss. The rumoured 36MP sensor would've made for a nice middle ground between the A9 and the A7RIV, as I've noticed the benefit of having more than 24MP to work with, but 62MP is just absolute overkill. Without that extra bump in MP and still no Picture Profiles, it's just not the right camera for me.
@jamespeirce2582
@jamespeirce2582 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve been interested in this camera because, in addition to Olympus, I shoot on an A7R III. I am very disappointed with the MP “upgrade” on the A7R IV so was rather wondering if the rumored MP bump on the A9 II might come to pass, but seems it has not. Which really makes sense anyway for the target market. Most sports photographers I know do not want more than 24 MP. But I may pick up the A9 or A9 II anyway just for the target exceptional tracking/focus capabilities. Going to see how much the A9 drops in price, as you suggest. Can’t imagine why there would be a technical reason for the video profile limitation. The A9 is the most powerful Sony camera and in many regards there is less data to work with. What it does with photos should correspond to adequate video capabilities. But I can think of some marketing reasons.

At this point I'm blaming the sports photographers for almost universally claiming they don't need more than 24mp and not more than 20fps, and just need slightly better ergonomics and workflow, and a better mechanical shutter, which is what Sony has addressed. Sony is listening, but that's a problem sometimes, I prefer when Sony doesn't listen and just does what they want, and that's how you get innovation.
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop 5 жыл бұрын
Ah no! I was waiting for this, but no matter how good, 24mp is too small. I had the a9 and as much as I like the camera, the files were too small. I shoot wildlife especially birds and niche sports like surfing. I ended up leaving the a9 in the bag and using my a7rIII along with techniques to overcome the slower framerate. I was hoping for a 36mp a9II. I have upgraded both of a7rIII bodies to the a7rIV and they do a good job with focus, but the framerate is a problem I have to workaround. When I nail the shot, 60mp of feather detail is awesome. I have the new Sony 600mm on the way and it will be interesting to see how the a7rIV and it works together. The bottom line, I hope technology allows for a higher MP a9III. I can see how media doesn't need more than 24mp as the files are heading to online publications or small print magazines and the higher framerate is far more important to get the shot. I do like that they are keeping this high-end professional camera reasonably priced. My last DLSR was a Canon 1DX which I preordered for $6,900.

I’m most excited that every time new cameras come out the last couple generation drop! I’m applying this logic or philosophy to most all technology in my life, but I’m also glad those that really need these new features are able to have them now. Also the RX series maybe added to my bag before one of these would be. I could see moving to Fuji medium format with a Sony RX counterpart in the future.

Well, aside from some tweaks to the mechanical shutter, upgraded connectivity, and a small number of other improvements, I really don't see any compelling reason for existing A9 owners to upgrade. I recently played with the A7Riv in a local Sony store, and found the ergonomics, although improved over previous A7/A9 bodies, still cramped and uncomfortable - I posit that the most comfortably ergonomic e-mount camera ever is the.... A3500! So, the A9ii from 1st appearances will not be noticeably more comfortable to work with than it's predecessor. This has turned out to be a predictable (with the Olympics around the corner) and incrementally minor update to the A9 - I would rather have seen the A7Siii announced, but never mind - it's like Sony are flogging the already front running horse to win by slightly more - semi-pointless in my book.

Sony is clearly branching out its line-up: they might as well call the a9 line-up a9sport or a9journalist. Because that's what its clearly for. Sure you can shoot it in studio or record video, but in that case Sony really is telling you to just buy another of their cameras. Sony is ready to force customers to choose, in order to stay competitive in all aspects. I think that is a good choice, but they should really release a10 which can do everything really really well. As many professionals don't get to choose to not do video, or to only do potraits, there clearly is a need for more diverse option.

Electronic shutter banding is really bad 8. Electronic shutter ruins the background blur even of ultra wide aperture lenses 9. VF lag is intolerable 10. Sony is dividing the system from more product sales, but if it made a merger with these 2 cameras performance, AND most importantly fix the 4 or 5 MAJOR issues in memory handling, and menu system, it would be game over for many other brands.

Phil Indeblanc they probably want to differentiate their products so they don’t eat into each other’s sales. They want you to buy multiple bodies instead of just one really expensive body. If the a92 is $4500, $1000 extra is probably minimum for all the other features of the other bodies assuming it’s even technologically possible.

If A9 is sluggish in reading 24 megapixel files with it's UHSII card what more with a 40 megapixel?
@philindeblanc
@philindeblanc 5 жыл бұрын
@@crismeman3386 That IS a problem. There is no technical reason for it to be sluggish, but Sony does NOT use multi memory processing for such tasks vs what Canon does. This locks up the Sony cameras, which is a major fail.

I was waiting to see what sony had to propose against the new 1DXm3 since I was planning to ditch Canon because of their video capabilities they decided to dumb down to protected their C series and buy the new A9 for photo and mini ursa G2 for video.. now that I've seen that I must say I'm very disappointed, 3 more MP than what I currently have? why? So will see if they decide to release a new A7 or something soon instead with a real update to the sensor etc etc.. but I'm not buying this, not even close

"Have made some pretty big improvements???" Both you and Sony are living in a dream world. Sony has remained pat with the same 24 megapixel sensor and FPS. Where are the increased megapixels? With virtually no new features or upgrades and all of the same limitations of the A9, Sony has left the door wide open for Canon and Nikon. Few current A9 user including myself, will consider an upgrade but will remain with their class leading A9.

"all of the same limitations of the A9" => that's incorrect though. What do you mean "all the same limitations" ?? A lot of those limitations have been fixed, the mechanical shutter was a big limitation, it was slow and noisy and only allowed 5fps, now it's faster, almost silent and supports 10fps. The UHS-i was a limitation too, again fixed. There was no anti flicker, again another limitation, and again fixed. The FTP transfer was limited and again fixed. If you mean the 24mp limitation and the 20fps limit, then yes, those are still there.

Respectfully, they have not "taken all of this feedback", they have listened only to the pro sports photographers and fully ignored the needs of bird & wildlife photogs - who's numbers, I suggest, are much greater. Same resolution; same (poor) EVF, and same SD-II cards when a CFExpress is clearly the right fit for this camera. They're holding back like Canon.
