That fact that the 1DX can shoot 20 fps both mechanically and electronically and that with full RAW, plus the incredible battery life and ergonomics (so much more buttons ;)) makes it the best camera!

I will likely never buy a flagship camera such as these, but it’s fascinating to see the current state-of-the-art tech. Thanks for an interesting comparison. PS The Canon wins the wind tunnel test due to its lower coefficient of drag. The Sony has a smaller frontal area, but is clearly a much less aerodynamic shape.

You cry when you buy them. The first camera I felt was worth the $6k is the mark III. Every other pro dslr, and even semi pro often times, from Nikon Sony etc I never felt like they were worth the money. I would have paid $10k for the 1dx mark iii. I'm going to get a second one at some point. It is that damn good.

It’s not what camera you have, it’s what you do with it. They’re both excellent cameras that will get you the shots you want, you just have to use them. I always thought that being a photographer and obsessing about cameras is sort of like being an author and obsessing about typewriters. At the end of the end nobody cares what kind of typewriter you used to write your novel. It’s the same with cameras. Just go out and shoot, be a photographer not a nerd.

1DX MK lll video has Full Frame 5.5K RAW up to 60fps - not 24fps. AF works up to 30fps in Full Frame 5.5K RAW but no AF in FF RAW 60fps.

My Canon 1dx mark III DESTROYED my a9/a9ii in general quality and especially iso performance. Once you hit 3200 with Sony, you start to make serious concessions. I would venture to say the Sony is at least two stops behind the mark ii and 2.5-3 behind the mark III.

Fro, I'm super-near-sighted with astigmatism in both my eyes and could never shoot stills or video with my thick eyeglasses on using any camera's optical view-finder, my sight it too bad to use any camera with my glasses off, and contact lenses or eye surgery isn't an option for me. In this case, would you recommend my buying a mirror-less camera with a large LCD screen or using some external attached monitor or monitor/recorder? What are the best options for extremely near-sighted photographers, videographers, and cinematographers for stills and videos over 30 minutes long (like presentation recordings) and under 30 minutes long (like product videos/short recordings)? Can you made a video or videos on this? Thanks. Jim.

All that really matters in a sports camera is how well the AF tracks the subject. The buffer is big enough on the Sony for short bursts which is all experienced serious shooters do anyway. The video specs are nice on the Canon, it’s time for Sony to beef theirs up. Also the Sony is a lot less expensive.

Asmund Erickson sure if you buy from Sony. Tamron and sigma glass is just as good if not better (see tamron 70-180 vs Sony 70-200) where the tamron doesn’t suffer from backfocusing like the Sony. And it comes out at like half the price

@jaredpolin you missed the most important factor between the performance of the a9/a9ii and the 1dx mark III. The a9 is a bit stickier. BUT, the canon just knows what you want to focus on. It is insane. I typically shoot in full area af. I let the camera decide entirely what to focus on. The a9 and every other camera could not do that anywhere near as well as the 1dx mark III. This is THE FACTOR destroying the a9 in regards to focus.

the buffer aspect cannot be understated. I had to borrow an A7R3 for a couple shoots and I hated the buffering. Not only was the amount of images in the buffer low, it took forever to write down all the images from the buffer to the card. And you can't do anything while it's writing to the card!

That is a prime reason I have stuck with 1Ds all these years, from the 1D Mk III all the way to the 1Dx Mk III. And even I was surprised the first time I shot with the Dx III at how unbelievably fast the transfer from buffer to card took place... It's a beast.

Lets got one thing straight, a mirroless camera does not mean a better camera, just a different type. Because it doesn't have a mirror, it comes out as lighter and smaller, but as far as photographic quality is concerned, their is no difference. Canon proved that since you can lock the mirror in the 1DX and for all intents and purposes, operate it as mirrorless camera. One more thing, the electronic view finder is always on in a mirrorless camera. So despite the battery life issue, it still burns more power than the TTL reflex camera does.

I don't have Canon, i shoot with A7R4 , But if you compare the build quality with 1dx, Sony a9mk2 like a toy. The 1DX build like an tank. Still hoping Sony make some real pro body like the 1dx .Especially the GM lens and 200-600 g really need an bigger body to handle those big glasses .

Jared, I agreed with you many things, Canon's physical design is better compared with tiny Sony body. The only point, Canon is a true champion because of excellent EF lens availability. I loathed RF lenses as considered to be JUNK and poorly designed also overpriced. Canon will have to improve with firmware for the autofocus situation. I had to quit and sold my equipment because I sickened with Canon to spend enormous money on R camera bodies and RF lenses. The professional photographers agreed with me as Canon caused a huge mistake to kill off DSLR included 5D series. The 5Ds R was the best design camera body.

Thats a pretty generalizing statement; I think that's true for most photographers, but specialty areas of photography (astro, deep-sky, action/sports/nature) do require certain camera bodies to get great results. However, I agree with your statement that no matter what lens/body you have, if poor lighting is present, the photos will be worthless.

The choice may also rely on the glass you already own. If you have a ton of Canon glass, you won't want to switch and buy all new Sony. Likewise, if you have tons of Sony glass you won't switch to Canon.

I left Canon for Sony after 40 years of Canon and Nikon pro use. I had the EOS 1DX and D4. I would never want to carry two of those huge bricks with heavy lenses attached around for an NFL game ever again. My back, and my wallet thanks me for moving to mirrorless. I have the A9 and A7RIV and am happy and can cover any subject. BTW Allen's is my dealer also, has been for decades, and they are the best. DSLR focus points are limited by the size of the sub-mirror behind the main mirror that redirects light to the focus sensor in the bottom of the camera. Since the AF submirror can only be half the length of the main mirror, because of the size of the mirror box, it can never send light to the edges of the AF sensor, unless the sensor is significantly smaller than the main mirror. This is also why AF points near the edge usually perform worse than the ones at the centre, because they get less light. For cameras that have a mount that allows a larger sensor (Like APS-C Canons with the EF mount), they can get away with an AF sensor that covers more of the image area, because the sensor is smaller in the same size mirror box. cdn.photographylife.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/How-Phase-Detection-Autofocus-Works.png

The stacked sensor is better, and can be updated via firmware, but for $2k more you really want the Canon to be better. The Sony is great at NO BLACKOUT! The Canon still can't do that, but you don't mention that. Leica Tl2 can shoot at 1/40000 sec, beats both of them. I don't want to pay $6500 for a Sony A9 iii period, no matter how much you sniff and I doubt if anybody will drop Sony and move to Canon. Will you?

I still think that the Canon 1dx III is the best. Too much hype about mirrorless cameras. What about the fact that Canon decided to make their RF lenses plastic instead of the metallic EF lenses? Also, so what if you can see the histogram and a bunch of data in the electronic viewfinder. People should pay their attention to their composition instead of a thousand more distractions. Not a big deal that the histogram is on the LCD screen in DSLR's. Also, if I want mirrorless, just go in Live View mode and you have most of the same right there. The only real benefits of mirrorless is the fact that depth of field previews loose no light in mirrorless, faster autofocus potential in RF lenses because of the more pins involved in the bayonet connection with the camera. Also, an action camera for wildlife photography, (myself), or sports photography should have the vertical grip included all as one body- less dust and moisture entry issues and the camera would have the shutter button and main dials for vertical-grip compositions. Hopefully, Canon doesn't abandon EF until maybe ten years out, (2030), there's still time for one more DSLR= Canon 1dx IV at hopefully 30MP.

And it's on offer at half-price for €27.99 at the moment instead of 12€ / month for the Adobe Ripoff alternative. While I enjoyed the video, I think Jared has the wrong perspective. Over 11 Years ago people on the interwebs were saying the dslrs were dead. Jared is saying the same thing. I will say what I said to those doubters back then. It is not about the camera, it is about the glass, and there is just too much pro glass out there for DSLRs by Canon. As far as bodies, Sony still does not make a pro body. The interwebs people were saying Nikon and Canon were dead. Jared says "Good buy Nikon and Canon?". I will say what I said 11 years ago. Nikon and Canon are not going anywhere. The DSLR can do anything the mirrorless camera does, it just lifts the shutter and it acts like a mirrorless. As far as the mirror and the OVF goes, it will only take Nikon or Canon to put a screen either in the mirror or in the body that when the mirror flips up, you can read the sensor and display it in the OVF. There will be no mirror black out, and guess what. All your old Nikon/Canon glass still work. Nikon/Canon will give you a choice, lower priced crop sensor DSLRs and mirrorless, Higher priced Full Frame in DSLR and mirrorless. I have seen reviewers say that Canon and Nikon are dead, just because they don't have the same features the Sony has they are dead or old tech or behind the times. They change their tune when Canon comes out with a 1dx iii. I would agree that Nikon and Canon would be dead if they stop innovating or making new cameras. But they are not doing that. They are creating solutions for photographers that use old, new and combination technologies. As long as photography it does not matter if it is mirrorless or dslr. As long as it move forward or get better, it won't matter the format or whether it is old or new technology.

"Real world" tests are relative. It appears that Jared's tests were done in well lit arena's. For me, "real world" means poorly lit high school gyms. How well does the 1Dx III track basketball players in high school gyms with a 70-200 f2.8L at ISO 8000, 1/800, f2.8? This is my world. In my experience, the 1Dx II will drift out of focus during some bursts under this light. But, when shooting in an NBA arena with four times the light (ISO 2000) focus tracking is very reliable. I would like to see "real world" tests that show how well the 1Dx III face detect feature tracks players in poorly lit gyms and whether the tracking actually translates to tack sharp images.

Why no just put an external EVF on the Canon?

It's not possible because there is a mirror. And evn if u flip the mirror out of the way the main display is gona turn on. So u will have 2 digital displays going on which will introduce lag and bad battery life.

Going on previous upgrades, Canon 1DX Mark IV will be out in 2024. The Sony A9III will be out by the end of next year. Just wait.

Pretty much. And by previous upgrades, the A9 III will have a brand new sensor. Considering the RX100 series was finally upgraded (last new one was in IV) which is now capable of 90fps RAW (24fps was the previous limit), good things should be coming from Sony's end.

The limit on the DSLR focus points is 1. Physical size of the AF sensor 2. Lens vignetting at the edges

It really has to do with the optical system. The angle at the edges distorts the sensors. That’s why no DSLR has sensors out to the edges.

Did anybody check if the optional EVF for the M6ii works with the 1DXiii? I know, it probably doesn’t, but it would be fun if it did. (And if it doesn’t, maybe they should make it work with a firmware upgrade).

The M6 II has a different kind of hotshoe, so it won't work. It has small contacts under the front portion that are out of sight, like what Sony uses for EVFs and microphones. Canon DSLRs don't have this, though it would have been amazing if they did, considering how usable DPAF has been in Live View.

This is like Ferrari vs. Lamborghini. Both sexy cars you can't buy, like these 2 cameras. See DPreview on the audio performance. The Sony A7iii had the noisiest mic Preamplifier a camera could have. If the A9 is the same that would be pitiful. Using an external recorder is your best bet anyway on video since most camera preamplifiers are not so hot. Screw the pictures, both these cameras rock the vote. Video is where it is at, and the Canon is coming back for the kill. But recording audio externally both do video nice. I still would pick the Canon first. Larger selection of glass. But the weight is crazy, but on the tripod you won't know the difference in weight anyway. The focus engine on the Sony is crazy good though.

☝️ One point though, new SD card standards are still coming and being developed. UHD-III and SD Express, which will show new speed gains.

I've heard UHS-III will still be slower. Though if it's fast enough to result in an unlimited buffer, the difference doesn't matter in the end.

if the a9 1 and the a9 2 have the same internals why would anyone buy the a9 2 ?

There are many differences. Of course, it's always up to the individual as to whether the newer model is worth it, but: 1) Perhaps NOT the same internals. Sony says the image processor has been upgraded to improve AF speed and accuracy. 2) More ergonomic body. 3) A9II has anti-flicker mode. 4) Both card slots now UHS-II. 5) Faster offload of images when camera is connected to a cable. 6) Voice memos. 7) frame rate in mechanical shutter mode up to 10 from only 5 fps. Probably a thing or two else that I've forgotten.

Lots of workflow improvements that professionals need. The original was more of a high spec'd A7 III. This gets all the smaller points that working pros would expect in a top tier camera.

I really wish Sony would give us a few better features with these newer cameras. I love my A7iii but would kill for some more features, weather sealing, and no SD cards for the cost of a larger body. I love how small it is, but like Jared said - a middle ground between Sony and these Canon bricks would be just fine!

And more features are always coming in. Something that Canikon fanboys always complain about, as they see "more features" as being useless.
