In my youth, I was classically trained at an academy type University, in vocal performance. This lesson very natural for me; we sing on Western pitches but the emphasis on "legato" tone was something that set me up pretty well for this piano lesson. To get to each note, there is very fast movement "glissandoing" in between the notes that we are trained not to expect and so we don't hear. I understand that the Russian piano tradition emphasizes singing to get ideas of tone production. There is a vitality, a grounded sanity, a naturalness and smoothness to this. With my jazz interests, I had to learn that every phrase and line is not necessarily to be played legato, but the tunes are. But one must know how to produce smoothly connected sounds on piano, a percussi(on)ve instrument. Singing is probably the best way to find it. The other day I was working on a rhythmically difficult jazz arrangement; I started, on the spur of the moment, singing the rhythm, 1 and 2 e and uh, etc., I think I took a clue from one of your tutorials, even putting in the crushed notes into the mass of beams. Until my dog jumped on my arm, wondering what was going on; was this some emergency? Should he sing, too? Bark? He is a high tenor with tremendous technique, free tone which resonates and carries up to 2 blocks away, but a small pup.

@@pianotechnique Miniature Schnauzer. "Beau," registered name is "Mr. Beau Blues," both because he has piercing blue eyes against a slate coat of mixed black and silver, and because my piano journey often leads me through "blues" genre. He's a pistol. Will often jump up on me while playing, often reminding me that I should take more breaks. He is a sweetie most of the time. Thanks for asking and your replies as you have time.

This idea is brilliant. Even as a guitar player I'm going to consider how I can do this "head singing" as I play, to try and make the music feel better. Thanks a lot for the lesson!
