I feel like I saw this video at the perfect time. I’m struggling with learning computer programming. I’ve been trying to apply the lessons I’ve learned from jiu jitsu to the process, but hearing it all from you right now has really helped my mental attitude. Thanks Rick.

I needed this today. 46 year old white belt. Had my first injury this week, and still tried to roll. Ended up just getting absolutely smashed on the mat to the point I honestly considered quitting. I really enjoy this but I just can’t seem to remember anything once the roll starts, and by the time I do I’m absolutely exhausted.

Professor, thank you for this awesome summation of the Jiu jitsu journey. I’m just a blue belt but I have told family and friends that Jiu jitsu is somewhat of a metaphor for life . I will keep going back to this video as I go through this journey. I watched your sons video and your black belt test and said I can only hope to be that good one day. OSS!

Rotator cuff impingement.. ulnar nerve compression....carpel tunnel. Scapula pinch...but happy with my jits. Here's the no 1 lesson. Flo Roll more . . Dont fight out of an arm bar. Leave some rubber knives lying around to give it street sense and add boxing.

Thank you for this, Rick. Curious to hear your thoughts on the intersection of "ego death" associated with starting and staying with jiu jitsu and the inevitable "imposter syndrome" associated with every promotion and not feeling as capable as your coach believes you are.

Second on the "imposter syndrome". I got my blue belt about a month ago, but I'm also the small, old guy with injuries and bad joints. I'm still getting tapped by bigger/smashy white belts or young white belts that have more energy and explosive power. I think I do a decent job of keeping a good attitude of learning, but some days, it gets to me.

@@ericcyphers8925 Thanks for this brother... my shoulder is killing me from last night's class and it is demoralizing sometimes. It certainly is a mental game to stay in the right mindset and focus on the right things.

@@ericcyphers8925 Haha, TOTALLY understand that. I'm getting an MRI on my shoulder tomorrow; it has been having issues since October. I show up to class with the intent of just watching and learning, but I end up rolling because, like you, I can't resist.

Thanks professor words I needed to hear after an unsuccessful weekend at a tournament. Someday I want to make the journey from Colorado to Wyoming to come and train up there.
