I was discouraged in high school from pursuing a fine arts program, by my parents. They meant well, but I wish I hadn't believed it when they told me that I couldn't make a living from art, especially considering what I liked to draw (DRAGONS!, fantasy in general). 'It's very good, but who would buy that?' - quote from my father about a dragon I showed him I was working on (I later sold it for $20, incompleted, the guy wanted it so bad). The worst part was, that after grade 11, I let my creativity sit on the back burner for many many years. I am so happy to have found you and Ginger (and Angela and Jane, Clive...) and your associated art communities. I know I can talk art with you guys and not be given 'that look'. This 'live' really resonated with me! But now I really regret letting myself get talked down on the price of the paintings I sold on Canada Day weekend.

Kelley, your comment hit home for me... I had a similar experience, except it was my art teacher who said something like that. I too was highly interested in fantasy art in school (dragons, unicorns, etc). We were supposed to start prepping for our Senior year gallery show, starting near the end of our Junior year. She pressed me to change my style to anything other than dragons and such, saying "no one will take you seriously as an artist", and tried to push me into children's books illustration. I resented her for it, and worse, my first and favorite art teacher, did nothing to interfere with the comments from the second art teacher. It ended up driving me away from the art program and I switched to music the following year. I probably didn't pick up a pencil to even doodle until maybe five years later, and even then it was sporadic after that. I'm trying to change that and be more active in art in some form or another these days.

When I was in Elementary School, Fine Art was considered "Still Life". The apple or pear, with a vase, sitting on a table. While attempting this project, trying to draw this on a sheet of white construction paper, doing the best a Fourth Grader could, my teacher walked up. The first thing out of her mouth was, "Oh, dear, you have done that all wrong! Weren't you listening to me at all? You should not attempt to do Art, you have no Artistic Talent! You need to concentrate on your studies and not try this again!" To this day, I will not paint fruit on a table with a vase! I shudder at the thought each time I see it! Talk about a "Dream Killer"! I enjoy watching you and all the inspirational ideas I can attempt. I am a Certified Elite Decorative Painting Instructor and Certified Ceramics Instructor in several different companies. It took a long time for me to get over the negative comments by my teacher. Picking up a paint brush and using the talents Heavenly Father had given me, was one of the hardest things I ever did. As teachers, we must always be aware of what kind of impact our words can have on our student's lives.

Your comment hit home to me in a very deep way. My parents (my mom in particular) discouraged my pursuit of art for the very same reason. I'm now almost 50 and with my parents now having passed on, I'm stretching my creative wings once again and am so very happy to be back at the easel. Cinnamon, Ginger, Angela, Jane and so many others have helped me to relearn a lot of what I had forgotten and I am forever grateful.

Love seeing you both together since I watch both throughout the week. I retired from the work force two years ago and needed a hobby. Last year I began with the paint-n-sip sessions with a friend and enjoyed the process of painting. Then went thru right side shoulder surgery putting painting on hold for six months. I have recovered enough to get back into painting and follow both of you and Clive5art. On a side note, my mother was a novice acrylic painter for many years and tried to get me to pick this up. Mom passed away last year at age 92 so she never knew that I had finally picked up her hobby. I just wish I had inherited her talent. Love you guys and thank you for putting yourselves out there on the internet for the many people who need this much needed escape and loving vibes you send out. You are the best!

Owning a GINGER COOK PUZZLE would be an HONOUR! Loved watching both of you together. I hope to see you on many more videos. I just started painting 6 months ago but my family keep asking me for my paintings. I have been giving them away because I don't have enough place to put them. I guess I never think of myself as an artist because I'm just starting out. Maybe one day I can be in an art show. That would be so incredible! If evr that happens, it will be because of all the things I learnt from both of you. THANK YOU!

I laughed with you two. This was great. My daughter spent a great deal of $ on student lawns to fulfill her dream of an ARTS degree. Most of the family and friends were brutal with her, constantly asking her how she would make a living. She stayed with her dream and currently is a teacher & director of education at a local art studio. I'm now retired (nurse) and am enjoying finding my creative side. Thanks to both of you for helping me with this. You are both a treasure!

I love you ladies! My mom and I have arted together for years, and we really enjoy watching y'all. We do most of our art supply shopping together and met Ginger at Jerry's before they moved. I was there with my list and mentioned it was from Ginger's tutorials, and the lady at the front said she's teaching in the back, want to meet her? Ginger was so nice and showed us where to find the canvas pads she uses. I dream of one day selling, and mom is one that enjoys it more as a hobby. Anyways, thank you for making the idea of art as a hobby and business more accessible to all!

Just downloaded The Mystery of Making It onto my kindle! Can't wait to read it! Thanks so much for the time you took share your info with us!! I started painting when I was in high school. And oh how I loved my art teacher! I would spend ALL day in her class! And sometimes she would say to me...Um Sonya, don't you think you should go to your other classes? And would say, oh please don't make me! LOL!!! Then I got married and had 3 children and worked ALL the time and had to put my painting on the back burner till I was 48 years old!!! And NOW it's on the FRONT burner and there it will stay till the day I die! Thank you for the chance to win your puzzle Ginger! Love you both!

HI, This was a super get together and I am looking forward to more, I was shopping with my husband in December 2015, and every year he has me let him know what II want for Christmas , I saw an artist set in a wooden case and right then and there I knew that was what I wanted for Christmas more than anything else. I did get it too, on Christmas morning there it was with the other presents under the tree. Well none of the presents has given me more joy and peace than that set with its tiny 1 painting size tubes of paint. Since Christmas I have painted at least 1 painting a day and sometimes more, the benefits of painting have helped more than I can express. NOW HERE I HAVE TO TELL YOU HOW MUCH YOU HAVE MADE ME GROW. Since painting along with you and others on you tube I receive requests for some of my paintings and this gives me enourmous pride and encouragement. My husband says my skills are getting better and is very supportive. He says keep painting baby your gonna be good, YOU ARE DOING GREAT imagine how good you will be in a year you have come so far now. So thankyou thank you for your time energy and lessons and sharing your knowledge. I am a nurse wo is disabled, retired and had felt that I had no contribution to make in life ,Painting has shown me a way to live so I cant say enough thankyous or express my gratitude.

I have never sold a painting....my husband seriously loves them too much and even tho' I have run out of wall space and I am thinking sooner than later I will grow out of my house with all the paintings...LOL....I paint for the enjoyment and nothing else, I love it. So having rambled on and on I want to mention the puzzle....I am not sure if my heart could take winning it, seriously, it may not be a good idea....LOL. I would not even ask you for the missing piece.....please do more videos together to just talk about art. You made me so happy tonite. I am now going to the next one I see is up. Love you both to death. Hugs

Hi Cinnamon, John & Ginger. Wonderful show! And extremely valuable info - especially about pricing and art show booth strategies. I've been painting for more than 20 years but have never really had consistent sales at shows but that's gonna change. My reactions-to-being-an-artist story: My high school counselor pulled out the want ads from the local paper to show me there were no Artist Wanted ads. I shouldn't have listened - it was the 70's, everybody was an artist!
@nordicpink8 жыл бұрын
Darn, Patty. That's was messed up of your teacher. I'm sure he didn't mean harm, but it was still just wrong. It's sad to see adults discourage kids. Kids have it hard enough with their esteem issues and such. I'm glad you still painted and are here today.

Loved this so much! A very raw and real Q&A from 2 amazing ladies! I missed the live because I was at my first Art and Craft market of the summer, and I totally wish I had seen this first! But now I can take this information and bring it to my next market, and totally ROCK IT! Although I must admit that when I told my father I was going to make my living as an Artist, he had a total breakdown and booked me for a psychologist appointment! I can laugh now, but at that time I actually had quit painting for fear of severe retribution. This time I asked him not to fear for me but to be there to support me. Love me as I am and believe in me, like I believe in myself.

This was quite fun and informative. Although I may not go pro, I wanted to post to what has been said about my painting. I am new, under 10 paintings. One of my first was "Lady in a Garden" video with Ginger. It turned out fantastic. So then I branch out into other styles of painting. Here is the quote, "Stick to stippling, that's what you're good at." --- So how do I know that's what I'm good at if I don't try everything's?!! 😘😝

It was so fun to watch the two of you together. I would love to see this on a regular basis. PS - I don't recall what you said about winning the puzzle except post a comment. I post comments regardless, just to say thank you for another great post. LOVE ART

@Ginger, you said you had licensed your art for plates and so on. Did these companies come to you? Or did you let them know your work was available for licensing?

Thanks for this! Good stuff to know for the future! I don't need it now, but I think it is good to have that all taking root in your brain early on. It was great to see your Mom too! Oh, I was looking for a list of the products and colors you use, and found the printable list. Thanks for that! Love and Light!

Love seeing the two of you together! I so love puzzles, but haven't done one for quite awhile! It'd be awesome to win one of Ginger's puzzles!

On your goldfish painting I asked if you were related to Ginger Cook, so I guess you don't have to answer. Thanks. You both are great.

Hi Cinnamon and Ginger! Loved the Q &A. I have two questions which if you have time I would love to know. When do you know if your good enough. I have done 2o to 30 tutorials and a couple of my own. Obviously I couldn't sell to any art company people with your original work. But I'm finding it hard to step out on my own creativity. I do a lot of photography and wondered if I sent you a dozen or so photos of mine, could you show how I would make my photo into my own artwork. I would be delighted if you could do it with all your Sherpa followers as proper video. It would so help me and I guess a lot of others. This is a big learning curve and I would love to paint more of my photographs or get inspiration from them A funny comment I had when showing someone my latest art piece was " are you not doing photography anymore" that was not inspirational. Lol. Lots of love Jacqueline UK.
