I do hyper realistic animals. I have been told they feel alive. What I do is all the left brain measuring and accuracy and trying to copy the reference. I do it in sections one by one systematically. I do this for three or four layers. Then I toss the reference never to look at it again, go into a dreamlike right brain state and go randomly from one part of the painting to another and feel like the animal I am painting. I imagine the smell and the sound of the animal. It comes alive. I feel the combination of both ways of painting works best.

Guys… can we please do away with the “creative right brain” and analytic left brain myth that was DEBUNKED 10 years ago in 2013. The brain is much more complicated than that and yes there are regions of the brain found correlating to capacities like language (even that is both sides), emotional states, etc but the whole RIGHT vs Left is simplistic and a limiting belief system. It actually makes people think they are predominantly one OR the other and that’s ridiculous. Take an afternoon and read some science literature published in the last 10 years about this and I think you will be pleasantly surprised ❤

Wow. I am a teacher and what you said was insulting. I teach creative thinking and how to see like an artist in order to understand art and communicate original ideas and that their thoughts and ideas matter. I also believe that one should learn to walk before they run, learn history to understand if their ideas have been tried before and what the outcome was at the time and how things have changed since then. There is discipline and structure to create a variety of art. I teach them the language of art and what they say to the world is up to them. You have some good ideas to share, but don't blame today's teachers. Students are expected to know more and yet many have little to no support system outside of school. Our struggle is more than you may understand. I teach until exhausted. Then I teach more. I do make a difference.

There are some things in life that are easier to teach than to do. You have the knowledge but not the required talent to be able to do it yourself & his comments about golf are a perfect example. Again, assuming you have the knowledge of the subject, it's easier to teach than do. I play golf but not well but I know enough about the specifics of the game to be able to teach it but unfortunately, the same doesn't apply to art.

I personally believe that they were speaking about the majority of art teachers. As a kid, I always looked forward to art class but never really learned how to use my right brain or express myself through art, even though I was very artistic. Class was all about memorization instead of intuition. But I will admit that having those teachers plus lots of family members who are artists, has given me a firm foundation to build to where I am now.

This has been a wonderful and encouraging podcast! I wish I met you in person while you were still living in AZ! I love hearing that you are enjoying learning to ride horses! Horses were my “therapy” along with art while growing up in an abusive and neglectful home. I continued on to purchase y own ranch in Colorado while raising my three daughters alone. Horses were my first and constant inspiration for my art. I am 57 now and still enjoy going to the stables to visit my daughters horses. My hope is to have consistent sales. My 40 year history as a professional artist has been feast or famine in terms of sales…either big sales of bronze sculptures and paintings or nothing for even years. I never could understand why.

When I'm painting, I use both my analytical and free parts of my being (left and right brain). I get lost for hours in painting, especially the details. I forget everything and everyone around me. I forget to eat and drink. I wake up in the middle of the night needing to get things down on paper. In September 2022 I used watercolor for the first time and have since painted at least 150 paintings. ( Started on my dad's death anniversary. ) Thank you for sharing your personal perspectives with us.

I must also say that I've noticed shades of color and shadow in most things all of my conscious life since about three years old, but had never really put that into practice before. I so wish I had taken lessons at some point in my life. At 57 I say it's never to late to begin. So here I am to learn... LoL

Thank you so much for posting this video. I am starting a new phase of my life. My partner and I are moving to Scotland in December. It's freeing up time where I can concentrate on becoming the artist I was meant to be. Following my heart, it's what I have always wanted to do deep down. You are right if you are always told to think with the left brain use loose your creativity. That is what happened to me. I am going to be 50 next year. The ability to vacillate from right brain to left brain is definitely a practiced skill; understanding skillful composition takes patience.

What she's describing is a mixture of literal right-brain-specialization skills (see: Roger Sperry) and "being in the zone" (see: Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi) in which Prefrontal Cortex, Anterior Cingulate Cortex, Medial Prefrontal Cortex and Amygdala are less active (diminished self-consciousness, sense of time, attention and cognitive control, and increased calm and freedom from distractions), and Striatum is more active (increased feeling of reward, motivation, goal-directed behavior)

This reminds me of an event I heard of, I can’t remember if it was a windows computer or iPad Pro or something, but someone had like a projector plugged in or something, and was drawing on the device. Very helpful video. Could I add one more thing? You can avoid or overcome artist block by just constantly and continuosly feeling amazed and in awe of the greatest artist ever, the original artist, the Creator. After all, everything we can paint is a reflection of the perfection He has already painted and created, whether plant, animal or human. Add to that, that He has gifted you with the eye to see the beauty He has created and to reflect it back through your art and appreciate that and you will never feel artist block. I am not a professional artist, I am self-taught but I feel excited and in awe every time I paint that I can actually paint, that I can see the beauty of a cat's design or the intricacy of the petals of a rose or the delicate contours of a baby's face which enables me to look inside and retrieve that desire to paint in awe and amazement. Be amazed by the endless beauty in nature.

I've listened to a couple of your videos this morning and have found them to be excellent overall. I have a different perspective regarding artist's block however. As a graphic designer and illustrator I"m perhaps in a slightly different vein creatively (although I don't see it that way), but I learned a long time ago to trust my subconscious thoughts. If I'm really struggling with a project I leave it for a day or two and work on something else (this is all the more important when working on a freelance project and charging a client by the hour, for instance-one owes them economical restraint as one consideration). This has resulted in clear solutions on many occasions. I disagree that one has to push themselves through the issue-I can't afford that kind of pain with so many deadlines-both external and internal, and I choose not to damage my personal process in this way. To push through and force myself denies my developed skills and talents, and seems completely counter to being in the zone, which I bet we all agree is a precious thing.

Very interesting work here. They seem to have an ability to raise insightful concepts on artwork and life in general at the same time. They speak of their own personal experiences in a genuine way, while showing that many people have similar thoughts - whether negative and destructive, or positive and inspiring. There is ALWAYS risk in art, and these talks are no different - as to how people may take what is said, or may comment in the moment. What these people here seem to do then is to just keep moving forward. And that, in and of itself, is a vehicle. Their own vehicle.

I'm a dominant right brain person. It's interesting how my art is helping me tap back into the left side of my brain! I'm getting into geometry and mathematical forms and ratios and sequences like the Fibonacci. Some of my right brain ideas of beauty and form are requiring me to think in these other universal and naturally scientific forms. it is more in the right brain abstract though.. I think some painters have a very clear/planned idea about what they want to achieve and don't want accidents, happy or not, to get in the way and have to clean up. It's just a different approach. I guess it just comes down to style/process. Working an inch at a time is extreme. I personally work in levels background, midground, foreground and I use a limited palette. If the paintings off, I correct with glazes. Rarely the case.

I really believe that the artist Instinct were born with. Course like anything else practice makes perfect. However it is my experience at painting and teaching are two different things! I found this channel just a few days ago and have really gained a lot of wisdom. I am only part way through this particular video but as they were discussing what is meant by the right brain a TED talk I watched years ago popped in my head and I have to share it. My Stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor. It is an amazing story and she describes what the feeling of being in her right brain felt like during her experiencing an actual stroke. We are all two hemishpered. Just schooling had us working out on one side mostly. Imagine a weightlifter only working on one side of the body. There'd be spinal problems above the strange physique. Same goes for the mental muscles.

With all due respect, knowing the business aspect has nothing to do with the quality of your work with your tools or having the vision required to create. Much like photography. How to see can't be taught in a classroom. The process is required learning but not the ability to see as the best photographers do. There truly are people who were born with a natural talent for what they want to pursue or some just don't recognize the talent they were born with. I was born to be a musician & was for most of my life without formal training. It wasn't a great accomplishment because I never really had to learn it. I could just do it without thinking about it. But, even natural talent has to be developed over time to make the most of it or it becomes just a hobby. What's worse is having natural talent but not using it because it's not important to you. That's not a fault but just where your life leads you.

I know that I'm not particularly good, or at least I know where I am at and why. I only have a certain amount of time/energy to devote and I am fine with that. So it annoys me when sometimes a person (not another artist) thinks I am being falsely self effacing or fishing for compliments/reassurance when I say matter of factly/unemotionally that I am not particularly good. I’m on the waiting list for the master program and I’ve been having a lot of doubts since I signed up about whether I can do it or not, due to constantly being exhausted. I have, however made a decision to follow my heart and purpose and transition to full time artist as soon as possible. I’ve been working on acquiring more skills one day at a time, more consistently lately,. I try to create art everyday as much as possible. I had a mild left brain stroke at the spot where the eye and brain coordinate. Haven't been able to paint for 3 months. Colors make no sense to me.

The right vs left brain has been disproven and shouldn’t be stated as fact anymore. Many books that discuss the right brain and art are doing a disservice to anyone who is trying to understand the process of art.

@@milanartapp most of what you were discussing comes from “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” and other similar books. The division of the hemispheres was thought to have particular characteristics (i.e. left = structured and analytical; right = free flowing and emotional). But when neurologists had new tools to show how the brain really works, through FMRI scans (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) they were able to see that the brain, although having unique areas for language, sight, etc., the brain was using both hemispheres together to process and engage the task at hand. The book I mentioned above was considered to be the bible for artists. Unfortunately it’s an old wives tale that society believed wholeheartedly until science had proved it that the right side of the brain was more artistic and the left was intellectual. A lot of people still use this as a way to engage conversations to “prove” why they are the way they are and being in the career they are in. The reality is that the brain works as a cohesive unit and can constantly renew its self, or allow oneself to learn new skills through neural plasticity. I hope this helps. Yes, left-right brain is a simplistic view and there are now improved models of understanding. Two books I can think of: The Master and His Emissary - Iain mcGilchrist. And: Switch on Your Brain - Dr Caroline Leaf.

Left brain, right brain! skills? Art history! Maybe this is what art teachers make students believe. True Art is a talent, if you got it you don't need a "teacher"

Almost every well-known artist in history had a teacher or master they learned from. For example, Raphael learned from Timoteo Viti who learned from Francesco Francia who learned from Marco Zoppo who learned from Lippo di Dalmasio who learned from Simone dei Crocifissi and it goes on and on. It's very difficult to find an artist from the past or today who is prolific and successful without never having had a teacher.
