There are many different types of care that can be accommodating for a person on the autism spectrum trying to live as independently as possible.
Extra Care Housing / Sheltered Accommodation
This type of care is a live in care home situation where there are special accommodation facilities which house people who are having difficulties living independently where you live in a 24 hour occupied and staffed building with care on a touch of a button and this can cover all aspects of your life and needs where it is greatly needed.
Supported Living
Supported living can be a accommodation arranged or housing arranged by the local council or housing association/charities and this is a program where a person can have personal-care of varying degrees.
This can range from getting their medication sorted going to work and is it activities on a daily life. The housing may sometimes be shared housing or independent living.
Domiciliary care
This type of care is where you live in a private or council rented accommodation and a care agent comes to visit you to help with whatever needs you need like cooking or going to the washing facilities or shopping for food.
The visit will be once or twice a week or maybe every day depending on your level of needs.
Funding
It is wise to also plan for the funding as these systems to cost that are numerous ways that you can apply for different types of funding and in the UK the best website is: www.gov.uk/browse/benefits
Steps
In order to implement this type of care system is the Nextep you need to take after identifying what type of care is needed and what funding is available is the contact your local council or government agencies to see how they can assist you in supporting and helping to bring this to fruition.

Living on my own for the first time (no partner, no roommate or anything) starting at 26 is what started the downward spiral into burnout that eventually led me to realizing that I most likely am autistic at 30. I still live alone (alone as you can be with 4 dogs), but now I'm at least in the process of getting diagnosed.

We have an adult autistic son living with us. We are in our 60s. Our son has habits that are very hard to live with. Leaves messes everywhere and gets verbally abusive when we ask him to do anything. I've tried for many years to teach him how to live and how to treat people with respect and consideration. He's stuck in his ways, and I don't want to live with him anymore. I want him out. I want him to be happy and successful, but he doesn't do anything to move toward adulthood. I'm tired. How do I get him out of the nest so he can grow up?

I live independently in my own house. Due to very long waiting lists for care here in Belgium and me being labeled "high functioning" I officially only have somebody for 2 hours every 1.5 weeks to talk and help me organise, but she goes above and beyond to help me do some chores around the house while talking and often stays for 3+ hours. I'm very lucky she's so passionate about helping people. I also get help from my dad in the garden, but I really hope I don't have to wait too long anymore before I get somebody to help in the household at least once a week because it's hard for me to keep up with it, it seems so much to keep track of and my physical health doesn't help either.

It was if the gods heard my prayers (as a figure of speech, not meant to offend people of any religion or something): after years of waiting I finally got updates about the waiting lists shortly after my post. I got assigned an annual budget to pay for people helping me at home or elsewhere. This allows me to afford the person who already came every +-1.5 weeks to come weekly on a fixed moment, which gives me a bit of structure I naturally don't seek but does help me. It also allows me to afford someone to come help me with my household chores, which should start at the beginning of 2022, I also asked to have them come on a fixed moment of the week. My father still helps me, this budget allows me to officially hire him. We figured out how much my dad is allowed to earn in a year without losing (part of) his already small retirement pension or paying lots of taxes and made a schedule around that, plus I can now pay him for the fuel he needs to get here or do stuff with me, which makes me feel a lot better about it. I am also allowed to use a fraction of that budget to spend on other things than people helping me, but still have something to do with my disabilities. F.e. If I had a really stressful period of all kinds of things happening one after the other or at the same time, I can use that part of the budget to buy tickets for me and somebody I want to take with me to go to a zoo/reserve/amusement park/... to relax, with that part of the budget of this year I bought a second hand dishwashing machine and a second hand wheelchair (my physical disabilities aren't "bad enough to need one", but navigating my own way through busy places overstimulates me, a wheelchair allows me to leave that up to the person who is with me without them having to say "over there" constantly, plus most people give you a bit of space when you're in a wheelchair).

I like to live independently. I like time to myself, even when I'm with my parents I often spend time by myself. What I sometimes have trouble with is staying on top of the things to keep in order - cleaning, cooking etc - simply because I get distracted and before I know it, I've spent several hours focusing on the computer and then it's late and I'm hungry! I try and do some strategies such as setting alarms for myself to do essentials, plan the day in advance, things like that. I "fall down the rabbit hole" less now and it's more manageable when I do.

I can't wait for the day I can live on my own again, living with parents as an adult is such a challenge, because they still try to infantilize you, treat you like a kid, and be controlling at times. When i was away in college, it was a breath of fresh air, no parents controlling me infantilizing me, and I could be free and true to myself. I can set up my own routine without them interfering it. I do well living independently, i make my own schedule, appointments, do what i want to do, eat what i want, and focus on myself. Im good with cooking, paying bills, cleaning, so it won't be as bad.

Adjustments at work have been awesome. My employer has been awesome, got all the adjustments I need and more . As far as support for autistic adults, is almost non existent. Trying to get benefits is a joke and anxiety inducing.

The issue I have after moving out of a house is the noise levels in a flat. If any of you struggle with noise then I would suggest you make sure the neighbours are ok before taking on a flat.... I am on the spectrum and my partner is bipolar. Noise is an issue for both of us and currently we have an extremely noisy, aggressive fellow above us. No amount of talking or complaining helps. The local council barely acknowledges it. Life is hard living here. So, before that move you really need to make sure (as much as you can) that the neighbours are ok. If money weren't an issue then we would be out of here.

I'm High Functioning Autistic, I got married towards the end of last year and we are about to buy a camper and try to find some land of our own to live off grid. We're both pretty excited about it. I'd like to live like the pioneers, build our own home and such. I've lived at home way too long. My wife sees how mean my mother is towards me. From videos I've seen on KZbin it shows kinder parents that try to be more understanding but not my mother. So we're going to find somewhere for just us two. So here in Kentucky, going to try to find some place that has at least a well for water then we are going to get solar panels. Too hard to live on what I get each month to rent some place. My wife's house was destroyed by EF-4 tornado not too long ago, in the next county over. But she's getting money back, so we are going yo use that to move else-where... I can't hardly wait. Then I won't have a negative minded mother around restricting me and making me think I can't do this or that. Maybe my Schizoid personality will go away to, I'm hoping. I use to be a very positive minded person, but after years of negativity then I became negative minded. I don't like the negativity on a constant.

I'm almost in my 30s and deal with aspergers and this was a question I had a long time ago. The thought that one day I'll move out on my own or with my girlfriend and away from my parents does terrify me, I tell my girlfriend all the time, there are several things in this world that I just dont know how to do. They werent ever taught to me. I.e. updating your drivers license eith your most recent address on it, where exactly do I pay my bills if they arnt online. All these things. It's truly terrifying to me. So Dan, thanks for this video! It has helped a little eith putting my mind more at ease with independent living with aspergers. Not 100% sure if we have all those provided help programs here in the U.S. but it's definitely something to look into.

In Australia those sort of supports are now organised through NDIS, the process to get approved is a lot of paperwork and red tape and even after you are approved they do reviews of it - usually to see if they can reduce the amount of funding that they are giving you

I'm looking to live independently in Texas in The USA & I'm torn between three options 1. Live in a Supported Living Arrangement, I think here it's called an Assisted Living Center, I don't know what all they can help me manage and My Mom thinks that I'd be too restrictive for me because she thinks that just people with severe Intellectual Disability live in those arrangements or 2. I could live in a Low-Income Apartment with a Docent I think here it's called a Home Care Aide checking up on My Once or Twice a Day, or I could get and/ or train an Autism\ Psychiatric Service Dog to help aide in making sure that I am safe, but I don't think I can live totally unaided, alone, by myself.

Yes! Just 20 minutes ago I gave myself a panic attack imaging what I’d do if my house caught on fire and I had to check my pockets to see if my keys were there...the keys were for the car, I’d get my pets in the car and then... or no- I should call the fire department first...”where’s my phone...” I had to take a big breath and redirect my brain. I do this kind of crap to myself with different types of panic inducing scenarios every day.

Has anyone had any experience with carers where the help you receive becomes less and less effective due to isolation. I often find myself in a downward spiral of isolating too much and not being able to push myself to leave the house. I feel like carers wouldn’t be able to assist with this. I've been independently housed for many years, some issues here and there. Now, I'm gonna lose everything I've worked for. My services have collaped due to covid 19, accommodations I once had are ignored, my distress is treated as hostilities even when I've support staff involved saying no, that's not aggression. At this point I've given in, self efficacy, whats that. My dog is 11, kidneys are failing. I can just hope she goes faster than my housing. I promised she'd never be homeless but she's all I have. My own health issues are......digressing. Why did everyone say that learning these skills will empower, enable and enrich my experience with people and their systems. I often wonder how can a aspie live with someone, have kids... How do they meet, when do they tell about asperger, how make them understand we need to be alone and in silence a little time every day. I had some relationships, but I had to get medication because my level of anxiety get to the roof, and then stop the relationship after 2 or 3 months. I have 53 and comorbidities, so I know how I could deal with this. I notice a lot of vlogers have a partner, even children. Maybe you could make a video about those things, it would be great. i grew up with house helper who cook, clean, do laundry and accompany to do groceries and i really miss it because now i really have a hard time keeping up with all the hpuse chores. my ex's mother she always feel sick so she always has someone to accompany her to the hospital and take care of her needs and clean her hpuse at the same time. in other words i'm used to the idea of having help arpund the hpuse. it's not new to me and if i can just afford i will hire one. but of course not all maids are honest and good and it's actually hatd to gind one who is trustworthy. a lot of people don't realize this but maids and,or carers offer such the big help to the community so it's really annoying when some people abuse thrm and treat them like shit.

I had 4 walls but could not manage with bills and budgeting after spending 3 years living on the road. A family relative as I called him as I a child Uncle Jonesy whilst expecting my first child got in touch with another family member who had a farm after I was facing been thrown out of flat as I was not coping with bills and noise my uncle got me a static and I lived on the family farm off-grid growing my own living and working the land happy times. Then that family member pass way suddenly and Me and children got put back into 4 walls and again with no plan or support same thing but this time in large amount of debt and ex partner found me again and life hell then a cousin got in touch with aunt and me and 3 children moved onto another off-grid site and life is more balanced and becoming more debt free but I have some support from family I have left and children are grown and doing well in their next stage of life. Each person is different and have different needs but it is hard to find the right support when you have a society saying you are not disabled or NAS saying you not autistic enough. Being a single mum and trying to juggle children work and my own needs is a challenage and it does not get any easier as you get older I did not relise until my cousin Lisa said that I am coming more of reclose and less time out. I just enjoy peace and watching the birds and my animals on the holding. My other cousin is dragging me to autism meeting next week and already feeling sick and dreading it. Despite being trader and in enviroment where I am with people I just do not mix or talk except thanking a customer I just in corner of my gazbo and take customer money. I cannot get any support whilst in market places when an retired gentlemen is not there he make sure I have a drink as I do not remember to drink and make sure I eat as I do not remember I need to eat or doing clearance. Also I am deaf in one ear and losing hearing in the other. I am just struggling to find any kind of support and I have tried some of these places.

What about people with ASD which are capable of working but still suffer the same difficulties but manage to mask this,at the cost of their health and happiness,I always knew that I was different from childhood,it was when I got into my early 40s and basically had a nervous breakdown that it was discovered that I had ASD,after this diagnosis I was offered zero help when I was referred to Hampshire autism,when your an adult they don’t want to know you.

Hi you could live independently. Do you have a Care/ support plan. If not you can request one first. As it will help identify any support your entitled to. And you can apply to your local council or housing association. You could then if you had any support needs arrange for a personal assistant to support you. Go to your local government website for your local social care team.

I currently receive a waiver called the family support waiver and I get only two hours a day and it’s all state funded here in Indiana and I live in Indianapolis United States and they basically would come in and can help with certain things each day for only two hours a day my wife receives the CIH waiver of community integration him habilitation waiver and she would normally get eight hours a day but they pushed her down to four hours a day by the water by the provider that we are getting rid of and I seriously would like to get more hours for both of us to get the proper help at all that we need and as of July I will be tested for autism professionally and if I have it which I’m quite sure I do that I will need extra assistance and help with things
