Neptune in Astrology: Meaning Explained

Discussing the meaning of the planet Neptune in astrology, and explaining what it signifies in a birth chart, with astrologers Laura Nalbandian and Chris Brennan.
In astrology Neptune is generally said to signify illusions, mysticism, escapism, spiritualism, confusion, romanticism, the blurring of boundaries, extreme sensitivity, compassion, and transcendent experiences.
Neptune is one of the more recently discovered outer planets, having only been discovered in 1846, although astrologers have figured out its meanings pretty well after nearly two centuries of working with it.
This is part of a series of episodes where we do a deep-dive into the meanings of each of the planets in astrology, by reading some excerpts from different astrologers to see how they have talked about the planet in the past, and then using that as a jumping off point for discussion.

Such an interesting discussion on Neptune... my daughter has a 5 planet Stellium in Pisces in her 11th house. With a Sun Neptune conjunction at 0°!! 🤩 She was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder when she was 3yrs old and is currently being assessed for Autism... she dislikes loud noises strong smells busy places and also sensitive to food textures and "prickly people" to name a few. However she is the most imaginative human i have ever encountered!! She loves to draw and create make believe characters using graphic design! She is now age11 and providing she doesn't become overwhelmed with her external sensory overload she truly is happy just being and inspires everyone around her with her dreamy nature. I am so grateful to have found astrology this has helped me to understand these aspects of my daughter and I am less concerned with the traditional diagnosis that society have labelled her with. She is Neptune by nature! Autistic or not. And that makes a lot more sense to me ✌ Thanks for sharing Chris, I have loved this series a lot! Obviously this is by far my favourite 🙌

I so relate to being sensitive to loud sounds and smells along with pickiness with certain textures. Did she ever have an issue with meat at some point? I have neptune Conjunct the ascendant, pisces mars, mercury and venus in the 12th house. Neptune is also squaring my moon.

@@josephine3122 She doesn't eat meat either, never has apart from the odd chicken/quorn nugget. She also loves fruit juice flavours but doesn't like the fruit itself as its 'bitty' (her words) so we have to smoothie them.

@@carlyhardy3428 yes actually, mars, jupiter, and neptune was transiting my 2nd house and i got extreme stomach cramps outta nowhere. The transiting mars was also conjunct my natal because i have pisces mars aswell. But i would say i was eating things that i know i shouldn’t of and it came to a point where it started affecting my skin.(I got these small red bumps which is rare for me)

One insight I derived from this: the quality of people's experience of Neptune is mediated by how much Neptune their ego can handle, and this will vary over time and circumstances (set and setting).

Uh yeah. Laura just broke my brain contrasting belief (Jupiter) and faith (Neptune) at 30:45. I've been for a long time deeply fascinated with the way Alan Watts thinks. The way he describes the difference between faith and belief was illusion shattering for me. Laura just tied Alan's distinctions between faith and belief into astrology and shattered illusions. I had a conversation w/ my mum a week ago about having psychic abilities and being highly intuitive. I found out she has Neptune in her 1st house. She then shared that when she was in college, she used to practice automatic writing & she used to have strong precognition. Wow I never thought about Neptune affecting my hearing. I was always super sensitive to energy, magnetic fields from electrics and to noise, to the point that I am walking around with earplugs all the time because the world gets so overwhelming. Thanks so much for all of the rich, important discussion here and on the podcast in general. 45 mins in and I'm loving this dialogue. I have Neptune conjunct (within a degree) of my IC as well - in Scorpio (born 1969). My mom gave me Johnathan Livingston Seagull to read when I was about 13 or 14. I will never forget that book and the impact it had on me. I came to a serious study of astrology through the lens of EA and a fascination with Pluto...and have more recently been interested and seeing the value and of traditional astrology (currently taking Chris's Hellenistic course). I now think having the foundations of the tradition is essential, but there's definitely room for the best of both approaches.

I have Neptune at 29 Capricorn forming a grand trine with my Sun at 29 Taurus & North Node at 26 Virgo. Wow what a great conversation - this one will get multiple listens! This is so so timely for me! Laura is a total legend! I am Pisces Rising with Neptune conjunct MC in 10th house Sag. So Neptune is square my ASC and sextile Saturn and Pluto. Currently Neptune is 5 degrees away from my ASC by transit. I am an artist who is shortly going on an artist residency which is located on my Neptune line in the southwest of Ireland. There I plan to use drawing as a research method to document my time on my Neptune line. The residency overlooks the Atlantic ocean. A lot of the research I've been doing includes rituals and mythology related to the sea in Ireland and Scotland. I have also started working with scent that is diffused using water. Weirdly I always manage to live beside a body of water and/or near institutions for mental health services but that makes more sense to me now :)

My Neptune is in the 5th house as a part of a Capricorn stellium. It is very closely conjunct Venus (a little more than 1 degree) and opposite my moon in Cancer. This has manifested multiple ways; a strong pull toward art in general and immense creativity, a passion for music and film, dating men who end up being manipulative, attraction to others who are some form of artist as well, hopeless romanticism, etc. The moon opposition either enforces these things in my personality, or gives me a heightened intuition (or both). It's tough to say, I feel as if a lot of things in my chart can be attributed to multiple planets/houses, so I always have trouble discerning what's causing what. For example, my "intuition" could also be from having Pluto in the 3rd squaring my Mercury. I'm great at reading people, reading between the lines with things they won't say, seeing through lies, and knowing when something's wrong or someone is feeling "off".

This was a wonderful conversation - Laura is a real dynamo and wise one! I have neptune in capricorn on my ascendant. I'm grateful for this placement; Saturn return was clarifying, to say the least, and I finally started to find the Truth and purpose of things with this gained maturity. Fantastic presentation. I live in London UK and really immerse into Astrology during the last 6 years, and Neptune was always the most elusive planet. Today 30/6/23 Neptune became retrograde, and decided to watch this. It really helped me through its fog to understand it. I had a great experience with Neptune last year. In April 22 it got together with Jupiter at 23 degrees of Pisces , 1 degree apart from my Sun at my 11th house. At the exact day of this conjunction I had my interview for my US green card, and it was approved. New possibilities opening up as she said..

Neptune is one degree below my descendant in Capricorn (Saturn is in Capricorn supporting its watery guest). Neptune in aspect is in a separating square to Mercury in the 10th, an applying square to the Sun in the 10th (edit: I added Mars for some reason before, oops! I have neptune tightly squaring venus which is my chart ruler in its domicile but I've never experienced any of that. I'm in a long term relationship but I don't feel I'm idealizing my partner, everyone in my family and my friends like him and nobody gave me any sign that he might be wrong for me. Maybe venus in libra gives me enough social skills that neptune can't really influence me in that way? However I do have a tendency towards escapism, fascination for dreams and altered states of consciousness and a fondness for drugs and alcohol that isn't otherwise explained by the rest of the chart. I was also born under neptune stationing.

Thank you for this excellent conversation! I have Neptune in the 3rd in Sag squaring the Nodes in Pisces/Virgo and squaring my Virgo stellium (Mercury, Sun, Saturn, Venus) in the 12th, so with Neptune both being the ruler of my South Node and the 12th house I feel that Neptune has dominated my life (and past ones). I have a hard time being in my body, always felt that I needed to stay away from drugs and any psychedelics because I’m highly sensitive and also the ‘veil’ is thin as it is for me. I’m grateful for all the earth in my chart which enables me to lead a somewhat stable life, gives me a counterbalance and an emphasis on the practical, everyday things. I’m a creative problem solver, have an analytical brain that thinks outside the box and a ton of compassion at best and have also experienced cycles of getting lost in the fog and being completely confused and disillusioned. I started studying EA two years ago which has been incredibly nourishing and helpful to me.

I got this notification as soon as I got out of meditation lol. I’m a 0 degree Pisces Sun, Aquarian Moon, I have Neptune conjunct Uranus in my Capricorn Asc at 20 degrees. It Trines my Mercury in Pisces at 18 degrees and Pluto in Scorpio at 25 degrees. I have other aspects by sign but they are 7 degrees away which would include a Jupiter and Venus Square. Neptune definitely makes me feel like I’m disconnected from reality, I’ve often times felt like I don’t know myself although I believe I do. I would stammer a lot when I was younger but eventually I grew that out. This present Neptune Transit to my natal Mercury has affected my ability to stay focus, my mind wanders sooooo easily. During conversations, watching tv, I would be reading and not remember the last two sentences because my mind side tracked. I have trouble remembering simple stuff at times but I have a huge imagination and creative ideas because of Neptune. I’m into the Arts (Dancer) so I can see the pros. I can’t wait to see how things shift when it enters my fourth.

Wow, such an amazing episode! I had Neptune conjunct my natal Jupiter (trining my natal Sun) in 2018. Laura pretty much described it word-to-word how I described that period of time to anyone around me. I kept having that vision in my head that earthquake just happened and all the buildings are broken (dissolution of old beliefs) and it's a white fog and I can't see anything, except for maybe 1m around me. I have been anxious because I wanted to know which pieces of buildings to pick up and which were faulty and I they won't serve me anymore in the future. My therapist told me to just stay and wait until I know what to do. And a few months later a line appeared and I stepped over that line and fog cleared and this vision in my head disappeared within next couple of weeks. The whole experience lasted for several months. On the top of that it was the only time in my life when I was realistically scared of psychosis or having an onset of a mental disorder. My psyche was expanding and I could see that my perception on life is just a construct of my psyche, that there is no Truth, because my truth is also a construct of my beliefs and my psyche structures. That time gave me extreme acceptance of multiple versions of reality coexisting simultaneously in every person's head, and how difficult it must be for all of us to communicate (the transit was in my 3rd house), given that we all see the world through a lense of our own perception. And appreciation for human to even try to communicate and cross the information over. All of that multitude of realities felt like I'm going insane. I have been in therapy at that time and thankful to my therapist for walking me through that experience and being a hand I could hold onto. I couldn't watch any horror or scifi at that time, because I was so impressionable, so I had to shell myself from the incoming external information, because being in that state I knew I need to rely on internal, not external guidance. It was the most psychologically beautiful and difficult time of my life. The understanding I gain through that transit forever shifted my relationship with life, people, psyche. I discovered astrology only a year and a half ago, and listening to this episode was a beautiful revelation of how that time was a play between Nuptune and Jupiter. Thank you!

I have Neptune in the 10th house in conjunction with the MC and the moon in Scorpio (sidereal) or Sagittarius (tropical), in sextile with the sun and Pluto (in trine with each other), and square my ascendant in Aquarius (sidereal) or Pisces (tropical). Always felt at odds with reality, that it was too small or constricting, and drawn to the so-called spiritual realm. It took me a good while - after much toil and trouble - to realize that spirituality is nothing more than making one's ideals real, being coherent with one's ideals in terms of one's thoughts, feelings, and acts. Without making peace with reality, spirituality is essentially projection and escapism, really. Cheers from Brazil! 😉

Fascinating topic! I'm a Pisces Sun, Scorpio Moon, and Virgo Rising. Neptune (in ♏ 3rd House) squares Mercury (in ♒ 5th or 6th House depending on the house system). Jupiter & Uranus (in Libra, 1st House Placidus, 2nd House whole sign) sextile Neptune. Neptune also sextile Pluto and my Asc (Virgo). Neptune in Sagittarius conjunct Jupiter, 3rd hse, trine Mercury in Aries in 7th, (with Pisces Sun) with Mercury opposite Pluto in Virgo, which is my ascendent. I have a huge sensitivity to sound, I used to go to amplified events and try to get them to turn it down! hahaa I just don't go anymore. I have precognitions, clairaudience telepathy at times, I love the mystics and all esoteric subjects, I got interested in astrology at 20, but my ability to ignore my senses (scary repressed bullying father) and my emotions (black sheep of the family), continued until I had a Pluto trine to my ascendent, and lost all the relationships that were built on my own hopes and projections rather than mutual understanding. Since then, I'm learning to feel (Uranus opp. Moon transit?) learning to trust my very strong and present intuition, and channel it into service. Excellent conversation, very helpful for me recognising who I am, now I'm shedding the illusions: VERY Neptunian! Thank you both - Namaste.

I have Neptune conjunct Moon in my 3H Aquarius, both opposite my Jupiter in Leo 9H. It's an experience, honestly, and it's pretty refreshing to see how what you have learned about the world correlates to the the meaning of existence. How you can derive meaning from understanding the true nature of reality. I also have Neptune making a very tight trine to both my Venus and Mercury in Gemini, so that's another intellectual thingy ig. But honestly speaking, I never truly realised how like 60% of my personality is my whole thingy going on with Neptune, considering it is first in a tight conjunction to my moon and then a tight opposition with my chart ruler. I always struggled with comprehending what exactly this Leo-Aquarius axis meant for me.. but damn I only realised the true meaning after watching this episode on Neptune. This is an amazing episode! Very interesting conversation. I happen to have Venus in Aries in XII. Sagittarius Moon in VIII conjunct Neptune, Neptune sextile Pluto in Libra, and Neptune trine my Aries ascendant. I have Neptune in my 4th house of Scorpio along with my North Node. Right from the beginning of my life I remember having very sensitive perceptive abilities. I was hypersensitive to sounds. I couldn't bear the sound of the vacuum cleaner, motorcycles, snowmobiles. It felt terrible to me to be in big box stores. To me they were obnoxious. Way too brightly lighted, sounds bounce around the gargantuan space in way that made me panic. I was hypersensitive to taste. Sometimes that was good. My palate cradled around deliciousness in a way that could transcend me. No, I didn't become obese. The sensitivity is also in my gut making me hypersensitive or allergic to many foods. I'm also very tactically sensitive. Later in life I became a ceramic sculpture. I can lose myself or find myself in the curves, angles and textures of clay. My sensitivity to sounds is expressed in it's highest form in my love of music. Decades after I was that little girl covering hear ears and hiding from loud noises that others were unfazed by, it was revealed that I have perfect pitch and an uncanny auditory memory. These assets come in handy when I sing classical choral music. While both of my parents loved music and sang, it was my mother, 4th house where my Neptune/ North Node are placed in Scorpio, who was my twin in the love of painting and photography. And spirituality. While my mom was very psychically gifted I know she wouldn't approve of my fascination with astrology. But when it all meet up to form a higher understanding how can I not want to know more? BTW, Leo ascendant, sun and moon in chatty Gemini, Taurus with Mercury in the 10th. See why I can write so much?

This was super helpful. I can also see through my eyelids and have most of the hypersensitivities mentioned. Moon conjunct Neptune, Saturn opposition Neptune, Mars square Neptune, Mercury and Pluto sextile Neptune. I am very sensitive to noise and light, crazy active dream life. Traumatic childhood with mother but I believe Neptune helped me escape in healthy ways through my drawing, painting and day dreaming. I do have to be careful of escapism through alcohol and people who may not be who they present themselves to be.

Hi Laura! Enjoyed meeting you at NORWAC earlier this year. :) Looking forward to seeing you in person in 2022. In my chart, Neptune is in Capricorn in the 7th house. It's about 3 degrees from an applying conjunction with Uranus (for all of you with ephemeris brain, you'll probably recognize this from a lot of the early 90s charts you've seen~), and about 4 degrees from the DC. Trine by degree to Jupiter in Virgo, whole sign square to Moon (L1) and Venus in Libra. How has this worked out? Well, I have an example from my early twenties: I smoked a lot of weed, especially because my ex-partner smoked a lot of weed, and we became stuck in a sort of distorted codependence. I developed a sort of cognitive difficulty around this time called depersonalization/derealization (DPDR) which can be a side effect for some people of excessive cannabis intake: it basically impacted my ability (whether I was stoned or not) to properly understand or feel connected to... reality. This is something I was able to heal from by quitting pot, which also meant I needed to leave the relationship I was in at that time. Maybe not the happiest of examples, but moving into my thirties, I have been able to channel some of this Neptune into being a counsellor and supporting clients. :)

Neptune on lot of spirit, both at 16 Sagittarius, 6H. Neptune in grand fire trine with Sun(15)/Venus(16) Aries and Saturn(10) Leo. Neptune square 9H Pisces MC/Mars. Neptune ruled by Jupiter in 12H. I have an ability to see the unseeable, know the unknowable, connect with many entities that are not in physical form. Today Neptune called to me at 4 different times to go more in depth/focus. Not surprisingly, I can’t seem to find anything physical to help with this (Neptune problems) but I have received what I can only call “nudges” towards the “right” direction. I have noticed that I am being asked to trust what I can’t see more than I have ever consciously recognized before. It’s the only way anything works for me right now; practically instant validation/confirmation when I do. Neptune is sitting on the degree of my current year’s Solar return conjunction of Mars and Saturn (22 Aquarius) in a 10H (Aries) profection year. There were a lot of 22s in that chart. Mars is in 12H with my natal Jupiter right now. My progressed sun is conjunct my natal Jupiter (Neptune’s ruler). Right now Neptune is loud in a way that only Neptune can be: like a billowing fog that has pockets of clarity to see through the mist into what is really behind the “curtain” (if curtains weren’t an illusion). 🙃

This is my favorite one by far! But I say that every time a new one comes out 😊 I have Neptune in Capricorn 3H conjunct Uranus square Venus in Libra. Up until now my love life had been a pain point, it can be tricky. I have had a lot of jobs, and money is an issue. I listened to this once again (ugh, probably a 3rd or 4th time) because my personal approach (view) of astrology is shaping out a certain way. Even though evolutionary astrology isn’t something I like, I want to make sure nothing is in conflict. It isn’t, it’s more like different wording. If I did work in astrology and had to discuss any planet in a lecture of some sort, it’d be on Neptune. It’s easy to notice the squaring of Saturn (1st) and Neptune (4th) is a heavy influence. Some relates to synastry, I did think some views on astrology could have a nasty conflict, but there actually isn’t. Chris sort of mentioned it in the episode, may touch on that. If I never listed aspects in a comment (I found using wider orbs more accurate), Virgo Ascendant.. (whole signs is more accurate natal) these placements are very much defining everything. Virgo Saturn, Sagittarius Neptune. Neptune (r):Sextile, 1 applying Pluto. Square Saturn 13 degrees. Sextile, 7 applying mars. Sextile, 6 applying Venus. Trine, 11 applying Mercury. Sextile, 4 applying moon. Trine, 9 separating sun. Bi-quintile, 0 chiron. Saturn: 8 applying conjunction sun. 6 separating conjunction Mercury (retrograde). 2 separating quintile uranus. (Above, Neptune aspect). 7 applying trine chiron. No conflict, just neutral with some inversion. Neptune is more archetypal, can work in small ways like recognizing you mother as your mother as a collective symbolic person, without Neptune they’re just organic machines void of non mechanical function. That’s a core of archetypes. In blending more Hellenistic views with psychological, I may actually take the psychological language and alter it a little where the chart itself is a house, the “houses” are sort of “rooms”. More closely, basement/attic. As above, so below. (Still in progress) “Sometimes an itchy eye is just an itchy eye”. One group in astrology, I worried there could be conflict. Not so much. One example is a topic about anima/animus; that’s easy to clear up by actual presenting citations of what was actually written by Jung. You can apply 4th as anima, 10th as animus in psychological language which is negative and positive. Psychological language is the same as 4th and 10th house significations or under/over horizon. Under mirrors in opposition the above: as above so below. Potential conflicts that would only be misunderstanding is everyone has looked a minor health problem to get freaked out by WebMD. An itchy eye isn’t ocular melanoma, sometimes eyes itch. Jung was a psychiatrist writing books for other psychiatrist. Astrology may help someone understand an internal conflict, it’s not treatment. It’s best to not use astrology for a diagnosis. People would accuse me of being a psychedelic user when I had no interest, can cite those Neptune placements. Growing up in the 90’s (a psychedelic revival) there was normal teen experimentation. Others had experiences, I was very “what about it?” Also, virgo with Saturn, I was more preoccupied by how easy it was to notice how dirty things were. “Heightened perception”, great. Let’s discuss how your clean fridge has some build up in the corners and there’s some dust in your lamp shades. Music is great, but there better not be any repetition and traditions in songs better be smooth. I can be like that and suddenly state views on numerology & twin flames. 👽😂. Becca Tarnas said it well, it’s about balance. It doesn’t have to be “real”, it just needs to be rich with meaning. Just not TOO much. I plan to use Suspiria (2018) as an example of Neptune. Fiction and non fictional blending. Edit: there may be disagreements on Saturn significations in evolutionary. 🤔 to me, Saturn counters Neptune’s escapism. Neptune wants to drift into a spiritual realm of high experience and Saturn says you need to learn here to get there. Buddhism is more Saturn than Neptune, but they work together in what I’ve found. Minor, there’s just tendencies on both sides. It IS hard to explain, which is why Neptune is a fun topic. (I forgot to put “applying” on Saturn/Neptune aspects)
