Ships = Navy. We already call our space vessels ships. This has some info about when we first started calling spacecraft space ships.

The Navy being in charge of space going ships of future has always made sense to me. The only alternative is the Air Force as we saw in Star Gate but they don’t have the structure, tradition and mindset to crew ships of multiple hundred or thousands of people. I think the HALO UNSC Air Force being a ground based Air Force to support the Army in planetary defense etc makes more sense. I also see Air Force special operations continuing to be useful: TACPs to control space fighter support for ground ops, SOWT (Special operation weather Technicians) would imo be even more important than here on earth due to wildly different meteoritical conditions on different planets.

First attested in English in the early 14th century, the word "navy" came via Old French navie, "fleet of ships", from the Latin navigium, "a vessel, a ship, bark, boat", from navis, "ship". Thats what google told me. Since they are using space SHIPS it just makes sense to call it navy.

Isn't the easiest reason for it being called the Navy the fact that they are called space"ships" :P. In all seriousness though the Navy would be the most used to multicrew vessels and as such would be the easiest to transfer people to the rank structures of the, at the time, new vehicles. Having everything from ship captains used to helming large lumbering beasts to the pilots with skill to land on short landing zones.

even 'ship' isn't that useful, as it's a term used for watercraft. Given the total sealing required for spacecraft (which is better term in itself), 'vessel' based on the term for submarines would work better. As noted, though, it'a a lot of callbacks to 1970s and 1980s SF fiction.

​​The first sentence was a joke...... plus I used vessel instead of ship in the later part of my comment as it is a better and more suited term than spaceship. The rest of my comment was a quick and dirty explanation that I feel would make the most sense for both in game and irl use of the Navy being in charge of most spacecraft operations. Another good reasoning for it would be the fact that Marines (at least in the US) are used whenever there is an amphibious assault taking place and if you consider space to be the "sea of stars" then Navy would make the most sense as now technically all planetary ops would be considered "amphibious" requiring landing craft to bring soldiers from main vessel to point of deployment.

I think it has always been accepted that Navy designations just make better sense. Given the Navy has always been the force that operated the largest vessels in the armed forces. I can see ground troops being Marines but given how few battles will be fought inside the air space of a planet it makes no sense there would ever be an "air force".

Regarding squadron commanders, at least for the United States Navy, they are always led by an 05 rank, which would be Commander. Captains would be over Airwings and is usually called a Commodore. As a retired Navy SCPO Aircrewman, you did a great job with this one Paul.

I struggle with understanding the military ranks in real life. Even more intriguing are the insignias and signs on the chest plates of officers. Hence this was quite insightful. However I would like ask your take on if these ranks will have a significant role to play within the SQ42 gameplay? Will our characters progress through the ranks? I understand that this is an important structure for lore building purposes, but does it go any further than that? "It truly is the shield and sword of humanity!!"

In the US Navy you have to have been a pilot to command an aircraft carrier. Maybe it’s the same for the UEE

Your summary reminds me heavily of the the Union military in the TTRPG Lancer, except with the significant differences that Union's military might literally is unparalleled by any other political entity in their known universe... and is only limited by reaction time thanks to lack of any sort of warp drives, artificial gravity being limited to extremely energy intensive emergency escape maneuvers, and FTL only being possible using purpose built space stations that can teleport ships instantaneously to other stations in their network. If you win one fight, you'll just end up in two more, and they'll probably be more experienced fighters. On the other hand Union is super reticent to get into wars, and eager to make peace, as they learned their lesson a lot harder from their previous fascistic administration than the UEE seems to have done.

Having sailed on some large US Navy ships, my perspective about why it is called the Navy in Sci-fi is because of the similarities of running such large vessels, and fleets. Both sea vessels and star ships require large crews. They both have to understand damage control and environmental controls. They both operate in a hostile environment. They both are expeditionary forces as well. Large capitol ships in both domains require a fleet of support ships with supporting defensive fire. Both require ports and support facilities. One travels on or under water. The other travels the void. I guarantee that one day starship crews will be just as disgruntled and homesick. Will drink far too much coffee on the ship and far too much alcohol ashore, and will be missing someone back home and making jokes about Jody. Same shit different place.

Basically i think space navy is more than a trope - properties of space like the large distances and relative speeds involved, difficulties in detection and targeting, equipment needed to survive make me think it will always be true that spacecraft are bulky and slow to turn with long range weaponry, so a navy makes more sense.

So the first unified government of humanity was the United Nations of Earth (UNE) which transformed into the United Planets of Earth (UPE) when political power shifted towards the colonies in the 25th century. When the 1st Tevarin War ended Ivar Messer took power and reorganized the United Planets of Earth into the United Empire of Earth.

I can because Master Chief Petty Officer is a real life Navy rank in the US Navy, it's the equivalent of a Marine and Army Sergeant Major. So in Halo, Johnson and the Master Chief were effectively the same rank. Though honestly I almost made a Halo joke when I wrote the part about ranks.

The UNSC Marines are a direct one to one rip of the US Marine Corps. Rank structure included. Spartan 117 "John" IS the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. There is a tradition in the Armed Forces where no one uses your actual first name. As many officers and NCOs like to say: "My first name is soldier and you will call me that". In addition many that weren't involved with the Spartan project or worked closely enough with him to call him by his name of 'John'. So in keeping with actual military tradition, everyone calls 117 by his rank. "Master Chief Petty Officer" or 'Master Chief" or "Chief" for short. It is not a Halo Reference and has never been one. Civies would do well to remember that.
