There was probably an incompetent nurse who told him that his back was broken when it wasn't. All knees are in pieces from birth and some never fuse completely ( a harmless condition called patella bipartita). I had knee pain from a fall and the nurse who saw the x-ray told me my knee was broken, but I later got to know that it was a harmless patella bipartita. It is quite possible that this was just a case of being misinfomed by a nurse.

Sure, some servitude was voluntary, like Jacob working for Laban to get his wife, but that’s not the full picture. The Bible does include forms of slavery where people didn’t have a choice-prisoners of war, people sold by their families, or born into slavery. They weren’t just signing up for a job to pay off a debt. Plus, saying slavery was acceptable because it was part of the culture 3,500 years ago doesn’t make it right for god to just not forbid it. Yet weirdly enough god was fine with forbidding eating shellfish or wearing mixed fabric. A lot of terrible things were "normal" in the past, but we don’t excuse them now just because they were common back then. We know better today about human rights and dignity. It's weird that god didn't. Lastly, the rules in the Bible about how to treat slaves might seem like they were trying to be fair, but they still allowed for things like beating slaves, as long as they didn’t die immediately. That’s not exactly humane. So, calling atheists’ criticism “garbage” ignores the fact that people are questioning whether these old practices hold up to modern moral standards. It’s not about misunderstanding the difference between slaves and servants; it’s about recognizing that owning another person, however you dress it up, is still a problem.

It's actually fascinating who the first historians we have writings from in different cultures were. Almost universally, they were *painfully* boring people. They sat around talking to old folks and priests and court officials and jotting down the stuff they said. He was just writing down what he heard, rarely even commenting on what he thought was true. Just "x said y" or "these people do things like this".

One of my favorite Christian cope arguments, as part of my top 5, is the "God wanted us to worship this latest version of the bible" argument. If we found the original manuscripts and they contradicted things said in the new, then believers would *have* to defer to the original texts. Meaning, you would have to admit that you've been worshipping falsely, and even perhaps sinning all this time.

"If you don't have a moral arbiter"......wait!! Stop right there! Theists don't have a moral arbiter either....they just assert they do. Its an error to let any theist proceed with the moral argument on the basis that they have an objective foundation for their morality. They merely have the assertion that a being dictated what's moral. But of course there's no good evidence for that. And so the theist is, in reality, is stuck with all the same moral conundrums as the non-theist and must subjectively decide what system they will accept.
