my sister, a devout Catholic, prayed for 4 years that God help her with the cancer in her back, and with the accompanying pain. Her husband and son, also devout Catholics, prayed as well. Many of my sister's and brother-in-law's friends and extended family prayed for her. She asked me several times, knowing I was a skeptic, to pray for her. I did so, because she wanted me to. She also suffered through all the difficult procedures the medical community could muster. She died last February. So, Paul from MI, why did your back-healing God help you, but not her, or countless others whose prayers have gone unanswered?

And you may use the plunder the Lord your God gives you from your enemies. 15 This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby. 16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. 17 Completely destroy[a] them-the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites-as the Lord your God has commanded you." If slaves were hired poor servants, why would "forced labor" be mentioned. Also, it says all people, meaning children, will be slaves.

Stop clouding the issue with facts!
@Carl_Frank3 жыл бұрын
The best part, to me, is that whenever this argument is made, they are ultimately citing nothing but divine command or essentially, "might-makes-right". All they have is, "something is wrong or right because God says so." If that's the case, they don't care if the action in question results in harm, suffering, misery, joy, well-being, or anything else (as relative to our experience as conscious beings that can feel pain, suffer loss, die, etc). If they DO care about any of that, they refute their own argument that we atheists can't base our morality on anything. There is literally no basis for morality in their argument other than "God said so", and it doesn't matter why he (supposedly) said it. If someone's definition of morality has nothing to do with pain, suffering, thriving, well-being etc, then I don't give a shit about that definition. They will of course always retreat to "well, God's morality is not arbitrary, because his nature is goodness, so he always defines morality based on that." But if that's the case then we *are* basing the definition of morality on whether an action causes harm, right? They can't have it both ways! Either this God bases morality on whether something causes harm, or his proclamations of morality are completely arbitrary. And we can tell what causes harm or doesn't. It can get complicated and difficult (we call those ethical or moral dilemmas), but there is at least a basis for evaluating actions, from our position. In fact, as the ones with "standing" (to use a legal term) in the question of human behavior (since such behaviors have effects upon us), we are better suited to evaluate human morality than an immortal all-powerful being would be.

Once I had a discussion with a woman who insisted that a boy who had been badly attacked by a bear had been saved by “god”. To my furious protest, why then this god had not prevented this horrifying event in the first place, her answer was that god wants to have people make their own decisions and learn how to cautiously and consciously walk through their life. So, I believe Paul when he talks about his back. The clue here is when he says that the doctor did nothing but gave him pain relief. 5 years ago my brother began having heart issues. the doctors implanted a pace maker, and he was doing as well as could be expected, until the covid pandemic was in its infancy in 2020. my brother was an early victim. he contracted covid and with his weakened heart, he passed at the relatively early age of 60. despite the many relatives and friends and supposedly all of their church memberships praying for his health and recovery. fast forward to a little less than a year later. i had c ovid and i never felt as awful as i felt for that week until i started to recover. fortunately i was and still am in good health, and my immune system is strong. but when i did recover and could leave my bedroom, and return to the normalcy of a masked life, my mom told me "you see, prayer works". out of respect for my mom, i bit my tongue. but it pissed me off that she gave her god credit for saving her atheist son, while her god let her christian son suffer with his weakened heart and eventually suffered through covid until he passed. now, my wife and i having been trying to have a baby but for reasons that do not need to be mentioned, our doctor told us that it is highly unlikely that my wife would be able to become pregnant naturally. (the fun way) so we are going through IVF. when we had our first attempt, the embryo was implanted and the doctor told us later that my wife was "definitely pregnant." we got tons of "oh i was praying for you" messages from both sides of our family and friends. unfortunately, her body did not recognize the new hormones and rejected them, making it imposible for the embryo to survive. at least thats how i understood it, i may have misunderstood the doctor's explanation. but long story short, (too late), our friends and family were soon inundating us with "oh, we are praying for you" messages. it literally pissed me off that these people gave their god credit for the doctors' and nurses' work and then after receiving the great news, we soon received the bad news, we were supposed to be comforted that they were asking this same piece of crap for whatever they wer praying for the second time? it baffles me that if this christian god does exist, that people can think it is any good at all

Paul keeps talking about the documents but doesn't realize that none of Jesus' miracles were documented during his lifetime, but were only written down 30 years after Jesus died. Instead of looking at the documentation, Paul completely misses that a lack of documentation of something as awesome as miracles at the time the miracles supposedly occurred is evidence that those miracles didn't happen at all. Once you throw out the miracles supposedly done by Jesus, the divinity story and the rest of Christianity completely falls apart.

One of the first things you learn in scholarly New Testament studies (yes, I did) is that "gospels" are not factual biographies in the modern sense. They are a literary form, more like sermons, or even what you might call "religious fantasies." As in, "Ya know, Jesus was so cool and all ( or I HEARD that he was so cool and all ) that if he DID do a miracle, I'm sure that this is how it would have gone down." Not to mention that the concept of "authorship" then was vastly different from today's. Any anonymous schmo could write a gospel, slap an apostle's name on it, and say "Even though you all know that it was me who actually wrote this, if Matthew, or Thomas, or Mark HAD written a gospel, I think that this is exactly what it would have been like," and everybody standing around would have nodded wisely and said, "Facts, bro."

Except this. Jesus is Satan. In the Old Testament. God said Beware of the fisherman of men. Jesus told Peter that he will make them Fishman of men. Revelations he said that he would give them the morning star. I guess that would blind their eyes. Plus in Revelation, he taught the seven stars of the right hand. A carpenter will get seven calluses in there right hand at work. Doing carpentry work. And many other things that he said that they slipped the foot. I Think Jesus was the son of the morning.Some call it Lucifer in the Old Testament. For he is king of the world. The Fallen one. And many other things to prove the facts. So if there is Satan, there is God. It's really common sense. And of course the Catholics have tampered with the Old Testament. So they can hide their face. I know this is a strong accusation. But I stand by it.

_"Why is it that every time I have a conversation with a theist, they refuse to answer the question that I ask?"_ -- That's an easy one, Matt. There are a couple of reasons. First, it's because they are preaching, not conversing. They literally can't imagine being wrong, so your question is immaterial. The point is to get you to accept their bat-shit crazy fairy tales. Second, even if they _did_ take 2 seconds to actually think about the question, if they answered it, it might show that they are wrong and that would throw them completely off. They can't accept the possibility that they might be wrong, so, when engaged in a conversation, they are listening only to develop a response, not to contribute to the general conversation and get to the truth.

As a Christian, I sort of agree and sort of disagree. I do think it’s possible you could read it by yourself and get something from it. If you’re going to really progress with it, God will lead you to the congregation at some point, though. God doesn’t seem to ever work with just one person
