@@devb9912 No problem, I was sent to a YEC school. Evolution, cosmology, and the like were hotly refuted. I had no exposure other than to be told 'the Evolutionist has no evidence and denies the truth of the Bible.' I remember they even stated 'you cannot believe in evolution and call yourself a Christian.' I had nothing to reconcile until adulthood.

@@CynthiaVanclair that's true, mostly. two caveats. 1. christianity with it's highly localized stories had it's greatest successes in lands completely antithetic in climate, environment and ethnic make-up due to a. being forced on people and b. being stretched and modified until almost unrecognizable from it's root SPECIFICALLY to fit those extremely different surroundings and the people there, from the spin-doctor from tarsus to the effing board-meeting in nicea it was all just "how to use this as a tool for governance?". christianities *inherent* adaptability is quite low, actually. 2.apart from the point about adaptability, your points are true for every other religion as well. we can argue whether the many achievements of the so called golden age of islam are actually rooted in islamic scholasticity or just clever imports (spoiler: the latter), but there is no denying that they were relayed to us by islamic scholars. not to mention hindu, buddhist, confuzian, greek, persian, malian scholastics. So, the point stands: christianities unique selling point is it's adaption by governments as a tool for governance and therefore, by extension, coercion and violence. You can btw accept these facts and still cherish it, both as one of the bases of our western society and as beloved connection to your ancestors, as for example i myself do as well. But lying to oneself should never be an option.

The first selling point of Christianity is that it grants a second chance. Do not worry if you are poor, or if you are suffering, you 'll be rewarded after death. That is both why lot of people were ready to die for their belive and why it spreads (relativly) quickly across western Asia and Europe. Another kye factor is the importance of piety and the duty of care for the others, which was important for poor/common people since the concept of welfare was born in the 20th century.

Try asking them sometime if there is actually any way to scientifically verify the Evolutionary model over the Creationist model sometime. There isn't a single example of actual empirical sense data verifying the former over the latter, yet they present it like it's a acientific position. It's objectively dishonest. It's comparable to teaching Creationism as if it's actually scientifically verified to be true. You don't just teach philosophical positions like they're science, it's incredibly manipulative. Because most people falsely end up thinking it's actually KNOWN to be true scientifically, when it isn't. The debate is beyond the limitations of what science can answer and can ONLY be answered within Philosophy / Religion. All the scientific evidence presented to support the Evolutionary model can also be interpreted to support the Creationist model.

The problem was that we had no idea if James was understanding anything Forrest was saying or was even listening. That's the problem I have with Forrest's long explanations. This is fine for teaching in a classroom but Forrest needs regular back and forth confirmation and interaction when explaining something to an individual because they will just tune him out and ask an unrelated question once he stops talking. I've seen this happen over and over in his videos.

I do remember the level of indoctrination that I had when active in my church AND believed many of the same things, but do not remember the seemingly absolute determination to avoid answering a question directly. It alsmost borders on being a dishonest interlocutor. At least have the honesty to either answer (however weak the answer may be) or just say you do not know the answer but will call back when you do. I feel for him, but I also have two people at work who argue every topic the same way (even non-religious topics). As soon as they seem up against the ropes, they deflect and dodge. @@PriestApostate I grew up similar as well, southern Methodist, Arkansas. For me, once I got to around 22 or so, I started thinking, hmm if I can come up with a solving solution for what ever "issue" the bible might have presented, better than what the bible did, better than supposedly the god did, then how could that be so? How was I able to make better judgement calls, ethical calls, etc etc than the god of the bible? And that sat with me for a good while. Finally I started coming across arguments online pro atheist, and I found this show, several years ago. And all of these gaps of information started filling in like a dam breaking. Also I became enthralled with behavioral psychology and psychology in general around 18, and having extensive knowledge of such allowed me to understand fully how so many things in the bible are absolutely horrible for humans in so many different ways, the knowledge I had started to make the bible look like it was wrote by a troubled 10 yo.

After his careful and factual explanation, which anyone could get FOR FREE in a public library, James from Ohio still didn't understand it or believe it. ​@Temulon the good that it did is that he showed James from Ohio that these arguments against his beliefs didn't come from a place of malice and opposition, but came from a place of applied intelligence. At the end of it, he did not become an atheist, sure, but that's not how that works. You don't drop everything you believe in after one intelligent conversation, especially not after you've been taught those beliefs your whole life from people you love and trust. What he came out of it with was the knowledge that his views on these scientific theories are flawed, and what he thought these theories were was not in line with what they actually are. It didn't change his mind, but it did open him to further dialog, and it showed him a desire to educate rather than belittle and invalidate. He was no longer defensive at the end of the call, at least not as defensive as he was at the beginning, and he was noticeably more willing to meet these guys where they were instead of pushing talking points with no intention of listening to the opposition. It's progress is what I'm trying to say. However small.

You have bypassed natural selection, so what would select each of the million genetic mutations? Without the proper selections, the dog would most likely be dead. And a lot of the mutations that represent change in a specimen will affect the growth of that specimen from a fetus to an adult. For example, say there’s a mutation for a longer leg, there will be some series of chemical reactions triggered by a stimuli during a developmental stage which leads to growing a longer bone and building muscles and tendons to support it. However if that mutation where to happen in an adult specimen, nothing would change because the protein that gene codes for will only do that specific thing in response to a specific chemical stimuli. Some mutations are beneficial, some are deleterious, and most do nothing different. In a dog with a 1000000 mutations, you will have plenty that are deleterious, plenty that a beneficial, and plenty that do nothing. The dog’s anatomical structure will not change because it’s fully grown, so the power of beneficial mutations are severely limited, while the power of deleterious mutations are not. Compare that to 1000000 mutations over a population over many generations, the deleterious genes will not proliferate while the beneficial ones will. In your question, which is a false equivalence to evolution, you would get the answer you’re looking for, a dog with a lot of issues. The previous paragraph should line out why this is a false equivalence. If you’re confused about how the mechanisms of mutation can produce new information and structures, I’d be more than willing to go into it with you.

Re continental drift. I was a graduate student in the late 1960s (doing a thesis on an evolutionary topic). The graduate students occasionally organised a seminar on a topic of interest, separate from seminars on current research by academics and students. One day we decided on the topic of continental drift. Some of the academics were critical - no evidence, just rubbish, a waste of time. It turned out that we were ahead of the times, as evidence for and acceptance of continental drift built up very quickly after that! It was great to be present at a key moment in the advance of science.

@@ultrainstinctgoku2509 depends on how you edited it's gene. For example, you could have had a dog that would have become male and by editing the sry gene you could then have a female dog. Or you could get a taller stronger maybe different color dog, or maybe a more intelligent one, or render it an unviable pregnancy, lastly and this is the most probable one, you could get a dog that is indistinguishable from it's parents, a lot of mutations infact do not really change much of anything, the mutations that are good for a species are such only in relation to external pressures. Lastly what you are asking for is not accelerated evolution, just a very edited dog, to have evolution you need natural selection. If you really want I can give you a good example of "accelerated evolution" but only if you don't respond to this comment like you did to all the other ones that responded to your question. Since you seem to be quite disingenuous, I want to see this conversation move somewhere before putting in it any more effort than I already did.

This one is so unique from the other callers and debates because this gentleman is listening to Forrest explain evolution, as am I and I’m taking it in, and most of these debates are disheartening but this one specifically is very uplifting and encouraging to hear especially explaining how evolution works and the Big Bang it’s very refreshing to watch conversations like this because it reminds me that there are theists out there who are willing to listen to reason and give the benefit of the doubt and give others the floor when they are speaking

I feel like we were watching two separate episodes. Forrestt was phenomenal at explaining things, the caller didn't appear to listen to a single word of it, merely waiting for his turn to talk most of the time. He refused to listen to reason, didn't give them the benefit of doubt even once, and only stopped talking roughly half the times they were. Forrestt and Jim were phenomenal, and that seems to have blinded you from seeing how this caller actually acted.

Honestly the end kinda made me sad. I was a Christian who became an Athiest. When he asks the Monkey question, Forrest handles it beautifully. The caller was starting to get frustrated at that moment and you can see after Forrest answers the Evolution and Big Bang question, he calms down because he is somewhat listening and understanding what Forrest is saying. And then at the end, it comes down to a rationalization of what belief makes him feel better, which sucks. You can see the progress he made in just listening to Forrest be an amazing teacher, but in the end it wasn’t enough at that moment and there’s a chance he’ll never want to go back to this moment and reconsider his beliefs.
