John McKay I wouldn’t pathologize a caller lol. That’s not wise. Advising Eddie to seek professional help is, as you’ve done. He seems older, so it’s not likely that he will seek help as the elderly tend to attribute their physical symptoms due to their acquired psychological ailments to a physical condition and may be at a risk of hypochondriasis (because of age and fear of death) as a result. I agree to your point that the ACA seems to attract many people from all over, but I’ve seen people that have distressing personal issues more often lately. If you’ve seen Talk Heathen today, you’ll know what I mean. It’s almost as if the ACA is turning itself into FFR, but I’m sure the hosts are always happy to help as they should.

That caller was incredibly slow. It took him minutes to finally understand Matt’s point that the god claim is un-falsifiable. Un-falsifiability operates as a substratum and only fosters the belief. That coupled with any sort of evidence one can attribute to their god(s) makes it incredibly difficult to free an individual from the chains of religion.
@samsatogardner
@samsatogardner 5 жыл бұрын
Sure, that said -- it's silly to hold out any sort of belief a deity exists because someone's might claim their deity is under a rock on Jupiter. In reality, no one claims that. For all practical purposes you don't need to show that any hypothetical god doesn't exist, merely the ones that people truly hold.

@I'm Telling It's not delusion. It's indoctrination. I've worked with people who are real deal delusional and it's not the same. They are not perpetrators. They are victims. Being told a lie and believing it doesn't make you a bad person. As somone who supposedly had a rough time in prison I find it really odd that you are wishing that experience on others over simple disagreements. While I suspect this is some sort of poe larping, I'll give you the benefit of doubt and assume you got a case of waking up rage. Have a beer, listen to some Hendrix, and calm down. You'll feel better.
@Mr.BadExampleMT

@I'm Telling Ya... I'm sorry but what you are saying is so cartoonish I can't possibly take you seriously. I've never seen an atheist refer to themselves as a "hard core materialist" or use the "we're just chemicals, man" argument outside of Christian movies. You also seem to have no clue what the selection pressures are for humans because the "bigger better stronger smarter" model is not how social mammals work. Next time you want to larp as an atheist try dialing it back a couple dozen notches, because I'm not the first person to out you as a poe. From what I've seen you've been called on your shit in nearly every thread you posted in. I don't know what herb you think "beer" is or in what universe you think beer is smoked. I also don't see why you think sane people are somehow new agers. If you are sincerely jockeying for the despotic rule of the intelligentsia, I'd urge you to reconsider. Because it seems you are vastly overestimating where your place would be in that particular pecking order. I've read Russell, Huxley, and Darwin and they all disagree with you on civics and interpersonal philosophy. You should try reading them sometime. It may help tempur your self image into something closer to resembling reality. A little Camus would help too.

@kayelbee3798
@kayelbee3798 5 жыл бұрын
Altitudes They usually have to do that because atheists try to reject all of the evidence that is in their face. So Matt spends his time trying to eliminate all of the evidence so he can say now that I have restricted everything you have as evidence, prove it. So ridiculous.
@Altitudes
@Altitudes 5 жыл бұрын
@@kayelbee3798 Nope. All you have to do is say "I have a deductive/inductive/abductive argument" or "I have empirical evidence". It takes literally one sentence. It doesn't need five minutes of prevaricating.
@kayelbee3798
@kayelbee3798 5 жыл бұрын
Altitudes Because Matt will spend the next 5 minutes trying to tell the caller why he won’t accept their logical, deductive reasoning and then spend the next 5 minutes explaining fallacies that have no bearing on whether what they said was valid or not. His groupies will have plenty of time to sit through that.
@Altitudes
@Altitudes 5 жыл бұрын
@@kayelbee3798 That's irrelevant. If you just outright ask Matt if he accepts sound arguments then he'll say yes. So you don't need to spend time explaining that an argument can be evidence, you can just shortcut straight to the argument. If you then don't like Matt's response, that's fine, but at least you've saved us all some time.
@kayelbee3798
@kayelbee3798 5 жыл бұрын
Altitudes If Matt saves time by NOT rejecting sound evidence and NOT reciting a list of fallacies, which his groupies seem to have plenty of time for, callers wouldn’t feel the need to explain what evidence is and what makes evidence valid. They would start with their evidence.

Some religious people cannot be reasoned with to be sure, whether that be due to heavy indoctrination or financial interest, but the idea that religious people in general simply aren't capable of reason is not only demonstrably false it's counter-productive, as how many current atheists would still be theists if people had simply given them up as lost from the start?

Rick, the "star in a jar" experiment is a process of cavitation. It is a phenomenon seen in some sea creatures that strike up a force strong enough to generate short-lived light as a result of the sound waves. That is called sonoluminescence. It is a phenomenon currently being researched. It gets you nowhere near your god. You can interpret all you want, but using a process of cavitation that we don't know much about (hmm... sound like the god of the gaps?) will get you nowhere. Also, the argument is a false equivalency when claiming the experiment to be evidence that your god created the universe. The medium used to perform such experiments is not a vacuum. If it were, there would be no sound because sound can't travel in vacuums such as space. So, to equivalate the universe (a vacuum) to the experiments of sonoluminescence performed with liquids is by definition a false equivalency.

Water, bubbles, sound waves, and light. All the sole components of this process of creating a self sustaining heat source via an explosion. And all these components are in the first lines of the bible. Deflect all you want, fact is this is far closer to the bibles theory, than it is the atheistic theory. If we can prove the universe originated this way, you atheists are in deep water🤣 no pun... furthermore the stars all make their own high pitch frequencies with explains how the shrapnel is gaining momentum. Further more different frequencies create different colours. Which is exactly what we see when planets are at different distances. Seems to me the fact that you atheist dismiss this amazing explanation of the universe origins, merely because it fits with the bible , shows truly how much of religious bigots atheism truly is. Keep your beliefs to yourselves. We Christians are using science to discover our origins, it just so happens to align with the bible. Suxs to be an atheists in the 21st century.

So yes if the stars frequencies are sustaining each other, than yes this testable theory, is a self sustaining universe model. Far more logical than nothing made everything, and ironic the bible unveiled this theory thousands of years ago, we were just unable to comprehend it without modern technologies.

My thoughts as well. He tried to condense the story as much as possible, so there's lots we didn't hear. I don't think he claims sole responsibility for deconverting her. Maybe she spent the span of time between their first and second meetings exploring the Matrix after he offered her the red pill. There is no way to be sure, but that's my hypothesis. It takes more than 3 hours to deconvert someone.

Athiest Experience you need better call screening. There are at the moment so many similar calls like that Eddie call, people who are going through some personal crisis and are feeling desperate and alone, they need a friend or a therapist (they have no intention of talking about atheistic topics). Letting calls like that through is just irresponsible, these people are in a sensitive and vulnerable place and I doubt that they really want to vent things like that to the public when they are in that state. The hosts also need to shut down those immediately and redirect them to some suitable organizations (unless they feel they have a suitable background such as licensed therapists etc.). By letting calls like that through, they are just inviting problems, both for the show and the caller.
@astrophotos8368
@astrophotos8368 5 жыл бұрын
laserbuddha I wouldn’t see it as that big of a deal. The hosts have countlessly pointed obviously distressed callers to helpful organizations. If they are willing to call, let them through. This can be quite therapeutic for some. Others may benefit by having their situation garner attention, allowing others to take something from the call too.
@callscreenerpaul6636

I agree In the time that I've been the call screener for AxP there have only been a handful of times that I've been honestly ashamed to have let a call through, and this is one of those times. When he called in my initial reaction was to pass. He seemed despondent, clearly in pain but not nearly as inebriated as he seemed in the call (but who knows what he was up to in the half hour between when I screened him and the hosts hit the button). I told him no, but he began begging me, repeatedly to let him on. I shouldn't have. I knew I shouldn't have, but I caved. I let my sympathy for someone in pain override the knowledge that we are not qualified to help with pain like that, and certainly not in a single short phone conversation. I'll only say to you exactly what I said to the guys in the control room when it became so obvious what a fucking train wreck his call was going to be, "I'm so sorry. I should never have let him through." I'll try to do better.

@@laserbuddha No, that's fine. Believe me, I'm my harshest critic, so I was beating myself up much worse than anything you could have said. And yeah, we all take our jobs on the show VERY seriously. It was a learning experience. I've only been doing this job for a few months and sometimes I honestly have to take a harder stand with the callers. You never really know how a call is going to go, in the end its always a crap shoot if how they come across during screening is what is actually going to happen during the show. In just this episode, we all knew that "Tim Tebow" guy was an idiot but he was fun and it let Matt make a good point about folks assigning undue importance to random events. The second guy lied to get on the show, he said he wanted to discuss evidence for God and then launched into his "Jesuits run the world" conspiracy theory, hence why he was hung up on so quickly. We were all excited about "Canadian Catholic" cause he said he was an ex-atheist who found faith and were all really disappointed that he turned into such a dud. Honestly it was a rather weak show from a call perspective (after a few very good weeks), but Matt and Don did their usual excellent job.

48:28 Nothing supernatural required for alien visitation? How about the necessity of going faster than light speed in order to travel interstellar distances without having multi-generational crews? The time required to travel to a star with another advanced civilization is always going to be greater than the lifespan of the civilization. The problem isn't how rare life or even how rare advanced life is - its the distances between star systems. People always seem to forget this, or erroneously think there's a means of propulsion that breaks the laws of physics.

FTL-travel is not needed for an interstellar civilization. Not even for an intergalactic one. All they need is time. Let's say life started somewhere in the galaxy at the same time as it did on Earth. And let's say evolution arrived at intelligence and technology 1% faster than here. Then they could be present in every star system in the Milky Way already. Without breaking the laws of physics. We know nothing about the lifespans of advanced civilizations. They could be much, much longer than human history has been up to this point (orders of magnitude). What could wipe out a K2-civilization? What a K3? Of course the Fermi Paradox still stands and alien abductions are no solution. The phenomenon of abductions is closer to psychology than to exo-biology I think. We also do not know how rare life is. Could be Europa has life on it or other moons with subsurface oceans. Could be life only happens roughly once in a galaxy. Who knows? Advanced life seems to be absent from the local group though. Watch Issac Arthur's video on the Dyson Dilemma. I do not necessarily believe Dyson Swarms are the only way a civ could go. But it would be enough if one did. Also the mind-boggling scale he got right. Advanced civs would most likely not be faint radio signals SETI is discovering. They would reveal themselves as an undeniable presence changing nature on a galactic scale. Most likely we would not even be here if an advanced civilization existed in the Milky Way. If one of their Von-Neumann-probes had arrived sixty million years ago; put the dinosaurs into rotating habitats and dismantled Earth for material. Then there would be noone here to ponder the Fermi Paradox. Except if they wanted to remain hidden so they could abduct cows and people with sleep paralysis/mild delusions from Earth... Anyway: Alien abductions COULD be happening without the need for anything supernatural. I do not believe in the extraterrestial hypothesis for abductions or that there are any interstellar civs around. But Matt's argument is not wrong.

00:59:03 I think Jeroen is confusing the AXP with what street epitemology would look like. A show like this is not ment to deconvert anyone (it can happen, but is very difficult). Even the person who is calling don't have any intentions of changing their minds. The show is more for the outside viewer, that can listen and take a little bit of response for theists arguments. On the other hand, street epistemology is more like a face to face interaction, is a honest and simple conversation, someone raising their doubts, etc, but more on a personal level. Usually only two people chatting...I mean..is not a big show to an audience. Is something more closed, only for those 2 persons involved. Although this usually takes time, the chance of success is much greater, specially if the other person already heard about it a few times throughout their life. We tend to think that a conversations in real life would happen just like in the show, when in fact, is not.
