Fair enough. I was just objecting to typical overly simplistic logic that makes implicit assumptions that are incorrect, which is why I pointed out the "shit" issue. I have no objection to cannibalism issue. The one question I would ask is why cannibalism is seen to be immoral or undesirable. Typically, the immorality derives from two sources: (1) a person has to be killed or die, and (2) we find the idea of eating another person's flesh gross. As for (2), finding something disgusting says nothing about its morality. As for (1) that would not apply in the case where Jesus willingly sacrificed himself and told his followers to consume his flesh. These things completely change in the other verses you cited (Leviticus 26:29, 2 Kings 6:28, Ezekiel 5:10, and Lamentations 4:10) where the context is typically that people are committing cannibalism both against their will and against the will (ostensibly) of the person being consumed. I would posit that this violation of a person's will to choose what they would do on serious matters and compelling innocent victims to die so they can be eaten is another immoral thing. Additionally, in several cases, the "cannibalizer" and the "cannibalizee" are related, so this also broaches the fundamental unity of the family. Finally, it is worth noting that none of those other verses refer to commandments, but either to prophecies or explicit events where Israelites found themselves starving and reduced to cannibalism. Cannibalism is never positively seen in the Bible outside of the Eucharist.

+youreconfused Take a moment to figure out why the information in science books changes annually? Okay I don't trust your critical thinking skills enough so I'll tell you the answer. The reason is science is always looking for the most accurate data. As a result as new information becomes available the conclusions change. If science was some conspiracy theory against God, it would just make up stuff and never change. Science by definition takes tentative positions based on the best information currently available, and the information in text books doesn't change on a whim, but based on the fact that they have newer more accurate information. And Biological evolution has irrifutably been proven. Change over time has been proven both in the lab and in the field even to the point of speciation. In regard to Science not being able to explain where the initial ingredients to everything came from. Saying I don't know is a credible answer. Science not knowing doesn't make any explanation that you believe in true. And answer me this on what basis does anyone deserve hell? Sure everyone at some point in their life has done things wrong, but most people haven't done anything that deserves inifite torture for an infinite amount of time. In fact it could be argued that even the worst person ever to live doesn't deserve infinite torture. Besides the bible isn't about never sinning ever. Because according to the bible even if someone never willfully does anything wrong they will still go to Hell simply for not believing something for which they have no reason to do so. And if there is a creator and it is impossible for someone to be without sin, then the conclusion is that there is something fundamentally wrong with the creation, and if that is the case the flaw lies with the creator.

Oh yes, mormonism is crumbling pretty quickly in the USA and mormonism is so obviously full of bullshit, it surprises me that there is even 1 person today that believes that con artist. If people were that stupid in the 19 century, they would have bought any crap a thousand years ago when people were even more superstitious and basically nobody had an education or writing skills.

***** She's 53. She's always been religious but she wasn't deep into it until recently. Ever since my father died back in 2013 she became even more devout. She constantly reads her summarized happy-happy joy-joy version of the bible, listens to the famous mega-church pastors and tries to go to church every Sunday. I don't want to take her religion away from her, same as you in your situation. It's therapeutic for her and helps her get over her grief. Her religion has her in mental crutches and if I even tried to take it away from her at this point she would fall apart. This is why I consider myself largely an anti-theist. I believe religion is a manipulative parasite that preys on people's fear and sadness in an attempt to siphon money from their pockets and make them like sheep so they can't act or think outside of their religion and have to depend on it so much that they feel as though they need to grovel to a God because they were told that they are worthless without that God.

When I was in prison since I had nothing but time, I decided I was going to read the Bible cover to cover, I never made it through the beginning of the book of Genesis. As soon as Cain killed Abel and went over the hill and took a wife, that was it for me. There was no reason to continue at that point. That was a strange time in my life considering that I had been a Christian for 40 years through childhood indoctrination. That is when I started to doubt. But even with the seeds of Doubt sewn at that point it still took decades for it to sink in.

In order to *honestly* say that something is "beyond our understanding" or that we simply "cannot understand it" - to make that assertion as fact - doesn't that require some level of understanding to begin with? Rather, I think people do understand it, and they don't like what they understand. It's truly evil that you can make otherwise moral people accept utterly immoral things by claiming "we simply just can't understand it..."

H.M. Murdock You cannot even call religious dogma an assertion, because assertions are based on evidence... the only evidence they have are the words written by a man, telling you that they were inspired by something greater. There is nothing to suggest that is true, as anyone can write anything and claim anything... the claim itself does not make it true. I would call it an excuse or a rationalization more than anything... it is said in order to allow the person believing it to meet some need they have to believe it in the first place.

youreconfused well all the material it takes to create life came from a mixture of things, one being the sun and another being meteorites or other forms of space debris. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and can be found practically everywhere on earth in almost every thing and carbon isn't very unique either. and then we kind of got lucky that everything fell the way it did and how it did to form the first basic life forms. don't say that people don't know why they are atheists, I'm an atheists because the whole notion of the Christian god as well as all other gods seems very ridiculous to me and on the whole illogical and irrational which directly disproves your theory of all men believe in god thus making athiesm a hoax. most of the time atheists have searched for themselves and found it all to be a load of horse weiners. do not project yourself onto others, is what i'm trying to say

How many religious people would do that? Monotheistic religions have evolved defence mechanisms to ensure dissent is punished.

If we ever figured out what in the brain causes religious people to think as they do, we might be able to come up with a medication for it, but how would we get them to take it? And, like a schizophrenic, if they went off their meds, would they revert to their delusion?

+Pat Doyle we need to do more research on the origins of Christian mental illness . I am very seriously mentaLLy ill due to my Pentecostal church Christian upbringing . Public school education set me free from the bible . Superstition from the age of 2 yrs old to age 18 : 24/7 Christian tv , Christian books , Christian games , Christian schools . And have you ever noticed how when. Christians get you to go to. Church the first thing they want to do is make sure your kids go to a separate room . Weird . Any way great topic and guests , thanks for posting . Very impressive , I recommend this for all ages

I don't like the shows where for various reasons beyond their control, only like-minded atheist callers get on. I understand fully they cannot control who calls, and who stays on hold, and all the many aspects that go into any call-in show. It just makes a boring episode. I think we all prefer to hear the believers and their terrible arguments and logic fails. Especially on the rare AronRa appearances, paired with Matt. It's like having Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb in your lineup and they get nothing but intentional walks all day.

This video is 9 years old at the time of my comment. I think we need to start asking one question and stay on it until there's an actual definitive answer, no rewording/ asking a question in rebuttal until it's answered. The question is; What is it these deities get out of/from human worship? I've been asking this for the last few months. Seen alot of redirection, reversing the words and asking it as a different question and no actual answer. Then I follow it it with; Shouldn't you know what your worship is doing for your deity? Priests, ministers, Father's, clergymen of all sorts are literally dumbfounded.

Thanks for that. I thought you were saying that new atheists think a God cannot exist rather than probably doesn't exist. I still think on a practical level the focus is anti organised religion rather than anti belief. Dawkins has said repeatedly that he thinks people should be free to decide what they want to believe ( hence the open letter to his daughter) He would argue that it is religions that seek to take away the choice. And of course you can believe in God and still be anti religion.

The defense mechanism they're talking about is - "I know you are, what am I?" The simplest and most accurate explanation of it is that they simply don't want you to talk, to use reason, to provide facts all in fear that you will say something that will prove their beliefs wrong. They're afraid of being wrong and you might prove it.

The point the caller makes at 24:00 (What if ANOTHER God is right, etc.) is what started my process to deconverting from Christianity. For awhile, I didn't really have a problem that A god or some supreme deity or deities MAY exist is was that they were sectioned into human ideas of specific moral code (i.e. religion) and how many of those claim to be the ONLY correct one in existence therefore creating a contradiction if you believed in the Muslim version of God (Allah) and it's moral codes AND the Biblical Protestant version of God . . . it just doesn't work.

I agree with several callers in that after reading the entire bible several times, who in the hell can anyone believe in any of this? One thing for sure is that if any of this was brought into court as any evidence for anything, it would be laughed at. If any of the 4 gospels had their writer's answer the question, How many angels angels were in the tomb of Jesus, as well as the rest of the tomb nonsense, ever stand up in court? It's no wonder why the major cathedrals had so much stained glass and artwork. The average parishioners could not read and write. In fact, reading the bible was not done outside of the church and this was probably the main reason for it. Where else would people see such works of art in those days? They wouldn't.

I'm surprised they didn't mention cognitive dissonance. The tendency of religious believers to protect their beliefs against all reason is indicative of the emotional investment they've put in those beliefs. That's what makes them more willing to be tricked than to recognize they've put their faith in something that doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

I am lucky in one respect, I went through all the indoctrination that children were and are subjected to, though I, for some reason never could bring myself to believe the BS. I still do get angry with both the religious and god bunnies for having created this social conformist construct for their cult and with myself for allowing it and choosing to conform for so long. I am now in the space where I am ready to simply mock this god crowd for the cult beliefs and practices when I am confronted with it and them, rather than going into honest discussion and conversation, which I prefer. The ability to have an honest discussion and conversation has almost been eradicated by the indoctrination that has effectively been imparted on them as children as well, making them adults only suitable to be a feature of evolution. The most difficult part I still find is that they're perfectly intelligent and respectful human beings we / I interact with everyday on a range of life issues, but on these issues they prefer to remain captured. For the sake of our children and future generations, do not give these mf's a safe place for their fbs cults.

youreconfused So a deity that is not bound by time or space, created time and space? So what you're saying is, you believe in a deity who is all powerful, but not powerful enough to create a stone so heavy that he could not lift it? Surely you can see that it makes no sense whatsoever. There was an exchange on this show in a different episode that I think really explains your deity well. You have a deity that is supposedly all powerful, but he's more than willing to watch a child get raped and say "I won't interfere to stop this, but I'll punish you later for it." If any human being did that, you would call them a fucking monster, plain and simple. By the way, it's not a new argument, but there has yet to be a good answer from anyone believing in a deity: “Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” ― Epicurus

Atheism is not a religion, that's simply a contradiction in terms. And to be honest I don't sound like the one being shrill and grasping for straws here. If you're seriously going to claim that evolution says nothing created everything, you clearly don't understand the difference between evolution and abiogenesis. As far as 'look it up,' I have, many times. I was raised in a christian home, and have studied many various religious beliefs only to come to the same conclusion, it's all horseshit. You said we have free will, and how do you know that? Because a deity told you that you have to have free will? Again, that sort of doesn't make any fucking sense whatsoever. Seriously, if you are going to claim a deity that is omniscient and omnipotent, to then follow that by stating the same deity knowingly allows children to be raped but does nothing means said deity is just as guilty of the crime by not acting if he/she could to prevent it. But again, I know your religion better than you I'm sure....or your 'holy book' anyways. You mentioned being 'free to murder kids,' which is a humorous example considering the same deity you'd like to reference, according to your own 'holy book,' actually commanded his 'chosen people' to commit genocide, infanticide, rape, incest, etc. Wondering how you can still think you in any way shape or form hold a moral high ground by worshipping a deity who would command such atrocities. It's alright though, your own words show you don't understand the very basic principles of reason or logic. To say an atheist wouldn't want a deity to interject is to show you're completely ignorant of what it means to be skeptic. Atheist simply means belief that no deity/deities/supernatural mumbo jumo exists. To be skeptic is not to reject reality, but rather to require proof. So you go into your closet, you pray really hard, and if your deity exists he can give me a call on my cell phone, send me a text, send me an email, contact me via social media, write me a message in flaming letters on the wall of my bedroom, etc. It's really that easy to convince me that a particular deity exists. If he/she is all powerful, all knowing, and present everywhere at once, you would think it would be rather simple to not only locate me, but communicate to me exactly what proof is necessary to convince me. The problem with your fallacious free will argument is very simple in regards to this type of deity. If your deity actually loved human beings, wanted a personal relationship with human beings, and again, is all knowing/powerful/present.... It should be child's play to not only provide proof/evidence, but to convey that message clearly and without any of the message being lost/mistranslated/misinterpreted. Next to creating a universe, it should be a snap. So, I'll make sure my phone is on as it always is, and charged right up. You go ahead and do your fasting and praying as your religion tells you to, and if you actually think I have a soul and need some 'saving,' let your god/gods know I'm asking for a simple contact via the methods described above. While you do that, I'm not gonna hold my breath. I'll be enjoying all that life has to offer, sans bullshit thank you.

No, these are not reliable ways to prove things. They sometimes lead to truth, but they are not RELIABLE - that is the problem. The scientific method has mechanisms in place to prevent misinterpretation of data (experience) and to avoid drawing improper conclusions from experience or data. That is why science is reliable (mostly) and the others are not. They work often enough to advance, but they are not reliable which is why we have progressed so much more since adopting the scientific method.
@pdoylemi

Sorry, but you are assuming facts not in evidence as well as using a special pleading fallacy. The fact not in evidence is that the universe began to exist. We do not know that. At the big bang, a singularity (not nothing) expanded and changed form to be the universe we know. That is not creation. However, simply assuming that a "god" can violate the rules of causation that you cling to in order to support your belief, but matter/energy cannot is special pleading. You're just wrong, sorry.

The world might be improved if you were to get on, say, the Dan Ryan Expressway during Chicago rush hour, say a sincere prayer, let go of the wheel, and have the faith that Jesus will protect you as he would anyone with enough faith to do such a thing. Either you will have some serious evidence that your god is real, or your genes will be removed from the gene pool. Either way, it is a win for humanity.
@pdoylemi
@pdoylemi 12 жыл бұрын
You are correct about that (in my opinion). However, few theists will allow this because they have no evidence to support the assertions that they make about god. As a result, most of them try to turn the conversation to trying vainly to debunk science, thinking that that somehow proves their god. If you ever want to see a frustrated theist, refuse to take a position on evolution, the big bang, etc. - it leaves them nothing to attack and they suddenly must present their evidence.
