A Jewish Christmas story... The teacher was very curious about how each of her students' celebrated Christmas Eve "Tell me Patrick, what do you do on Christmas Eve?" she asked. Patrick addressed the class. "Well Miss, me and my twelve brothers and sisters go to midnight Mass and we sing hymns, then we come home very late and we put mince pies by the back door and hang up our stockings. Then all excited we go to bed and wait for Father Christmas to come with all our toys." "Very nice Patrick, now Jimmy Brown, what do you do?" "Well Miss, me and my sister go to Church with Mum and Dad and we sing carols and we get home ever so late. We put cookies and milk by the chimney and we hang up our stockings. We hardly sleep waiting for Santa Claus to bring our presents." Remembering there was a Jewish boy in the class and not wanting to leave him out of the discussion, she asked, "Now Jimmy Cohen, what do you do on Christmas Eve?" "Well Miss, it's the same old thing every year. Dad comes home from the office. We all pile into the Rolls and drive to his toy factory. When we get inside we look at all the empty shelves and sing "What a friend we have in Jesus". Then we go to the Bahamas."

I don't know what people are complaining about. Christmas is like a two month long Superbowl. The pre-game hype begins in August with some lights and decorations starting to show up in stores and talk about the upcoming christmas/holiday season. Then at the stroke of November 1st, it's game on! Thanskgiving is little more than a halftime show when people load up on food and spend the rest of the time in the bathroom. Christmas Day itself starts like a tie game after the 2-minute warning, presents time being the final winning play, and the rest of the day being the players celebrating on the field and dumping big coolers of eggnog on the coach. The credit card bills afterwards are like the post-game review, and Valentine's and St. Patricks' Day stuff showing up before New Years Day is like people talking about the baseball season about to get underway as soon as the big game is over.

@RagingBlast2Fan11 жыл бұрын
He's wrong. That would trivialize the term. What if there are two sides and they have multiple armies that are spread out and fighting with each other? A war is when two or more factions/clans or countries/nations are in conflict with each other. That doesn't explicitly imply fighting, but that's the point. You may wage war, get across a message, and then sign a treaty without having killed anyone in the battlefield.

Thank you for defending "Happy Holidays" Mr. Mehta. I know people who say it as a sign of respect, but none who use it to 'stomp out Christmas!' Americans need to know that this country has always been a melting pot of nationalities, religions and cultures. While someone may be surrounded by Christians, everyone they meet or pass on an average day is not of the same faith. Muslims do not get a persecution complex when we refuse to acknowledge Ramadan, likewise Jewish people - and there are many, do not insist that we all educate ourselves in their religion and the proper greeting. Happy Holidays is all-inclusive, full of good will, and if someone's religion is demeaned somehow by saying it, their faith can't be very strong, can it?
@americanliberal097 жыл бұрын
"Americans need to know that this country has always been a melting pot of nationalities, religions and cultures." C'mon. This is the reason some people say "happy holidays" over "merry Christmas", because there are people in this country have different beliefs? "merry christmas" is just a holiday slogan.......so thus, everybody can say it. So who says that you need to be christian in order to say "merry christmas"? This is just pathetic beyond belief. Saying "merry christmas" as a greeting is not gonna make people being forced into christianity, because there's hardly anything religious about it. Changing the phrase "merry christmas" to "happy holidays" isn't gonna make christmas more inclusive. I'm fine with people wanna saying "happy holdiays"

I disagree. There is a war on Christmas. But it is the christians who wage it. Look at the man who is supposed to be celebrated: literally born in barn (humble circumstances, that is), he drew a strict line between religion and commerce (he cleared the temple of merchants) and preached povery. And to celebrate him, people go on shopping sprees and spend a lot of money to decorate their houses. Chrismas represents the contradictory stuff that makes christianity unbelievable to me.

In my hometown in Brazil, its the other way around, some christian preachers have have prohibited their followers from celebrating Christmas, because it comes from a pagan holiday. The vice-mayor is part of this church, so he is not letting the city put up any Christmas light or tree on public property, which is a step forward, but also 10 steps backwards.
@aaronrosenberg663311 жыл бұрын
I think many Christians are very fragile if their holiday is not validated by everybody. Case in point - your "happy holidays" speech. Also, pertaining to your last video, I believe someone spoke up (maybe me, I forget!) and so the manger scene was removed from in front of my city hall. This year, I believe it's the same creche that's now in front of the church across the street. This kind of thing also raises much ire among some Christians.

2) *The anger comes from the Christian need to have everyone kowtow to their whims.* The War on Christmas crowd doesn't want ANY other religion or religious belief to exist. It isn't a war on Christmas, *it's a desire to be included in the holidays (which are secular as well as religious) along with everyone else.*

I'm an atheist (and I don't celebrate Christmas) and I don't believe there's a war on Christmas anywhere I've seen. However, I don't think there's a need to be 'all-inclusive' for the end-of-the-year holidays either, any more than there should be 'all-inclusiveness' during Ramadan or Hanukkah, or Independence Day, or Thanksgiving, or Easter, or My Birthday. People send Christmas Cards, they have a Christmas Tree (regardless of the origins, that's what we call it now), they give Christmas presents. I see no harm in wishing people Merry Christmas (though there's no harm in saying it in other ways either). Besides, claiming that all mythologies celebrate something similar in late December isn't correct. So, in my world, they can have Merry Christmas. :-) My favourite quotation of yours: "Atheism is a religion like OFF is a TV channel"

I was raised in a non-religious household, and I love Christmas! I didn't even know it had anything to do with Christianity until I was 7 or 8. Honestly, I don't know why anyone would be offended by a Christmas tree in a public place. Sure, it's something that's linked to a holiday that many celebrate religiously, but it's not itself religious. I _would_ have a problem with a nativity scene in a public place, because a nativity scene is religious. But a Christmas tree is completely secular, besides the fact that it's linked with Christmas. Many non-religious people celebrate Christmas secularly anyway. Putting a Christmas tree in a public place isn't "promoting Christianity."
@TheYasmineFlower10 жыл бұрын
Christmas trees are actually leftover from the preceding pagan festivity for the winter solstice, and it was incorporated into Christian traditions when upper Europes pagans/Germanics/etc. were converted by the Christians of that times.
@RadioactivFly10 жыл бұрын
TheYasmineFlower So was the rest of Christmas. Before the Roman Empire was Christian, everyone celebrated Saturnalia. In order to convince people to convert, the Church created the Christmas holiday, which at the time was very similar to Saturnalia.
@TorianTammas8 жыл бұрын
The tree as most other traditions around Christmas are from pagan origin. Until the fourth century the date of the birth of Jesus was not even celebrated. As soon they started celebrating it they choose all kind of days before they choose saturnalia. So it was a war on Saturnalia that started it all.

Very nice! Thanks! The time isnt christian as nobody knew when he was born. The celebrating of a birthday is all heathen and it took till the 4th century for any christian to come up with the idea to celebrate it. The tree is heathen. The tradition to give presents is as old as humainity and even the heathen romans celebrated Saturnalia at the time we consider today christmas time and gave each other presents. Not to mention all the other religions who celebrated around this time as this was the reason in the first place for christian to put it at this time of the year as a competition.

I think Christmas has become much more than a Christian holiday, or a religious holiday for that matter. I have always seen it as a traditional holiday that we celebrate and if some people want to stick to their religious backgrounds as well as the religious origins of the holiday then that's completely fine too.

Very good point, I don't see people feuding on Christmas, except for on KZbin, Lol 😂.

As an atheist, I LOVE Christmas. Not fussy about the religious crap about it, its barely even a religious holiday, its a commercial thing.

If "Happy holidays" is offensive, is "Happy Hanukkah" offensive, too?

And, the Christmas merchandising started well before Halloween...

I always thought that "Happy Holidays" simply meant Christmas and New Year's when I was younger I guess I thought that anyhow the whole thing is ridiculous it's just sort of Christian social justice Warriors LOL I stole that from Kyle at secular talk

Probably not. I think it's a pop-up book with a bunch of pictures of (Christian) Santa and Jesus.
