God bless Franco. I saw Jesus of Nazareth in my youth and now I'm watching it again with my daughter. His work has touched our lives and lives of many others who haven't read the bible just yet!

Franco Zeffirelli was a gem. Great soul. Just finished reading his Autobiography. An incredible life lived and his legacy of Opera alone would make him one for the ages. His theatre and eventually cinematic offerings were formidable. His "Jesus of Nazareth" is the pinnacle telling of the Greatest Story ever Told. A human conundrum: devout Catholic who was a closeted homosexual until his 70s and passed away in his 90s. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Christopher Robbins: Thank you so much for what you said! I read his book in the 1990s, loved it, and when I later heard him speak on camera, I was saying to myself, "His book didn't have a heavy Italian accent :)!" The first couple chapters of that book are both fascinating and an exciting adventure. I married an Italian, and on my bucket list is to visit Italy. My hubby John's sister June made a visit years ago. She visited the small cottage where John's father was born and brought us a 2 inch chunk of the plaster wall. And I found out Franco came from Florence. Ah, that explains it! Vasari thought something in the water made Florence produce so many great artists!

Lunar Module: I totally agree. Just a suggestion: On the DVD of the Met Opera of the early 1980s, starring Placido Domingo and Hildegard Behrens, there is a 20 minute "extra" documentary of Franco Zeffirelli touring Rome of the sites in Tosca that he re-created for the Met stage. It gives a strong sample of how Franco truly appreciated beauty as well as his ability to create it.

I hope he was able to see Romeo and Juliet and his other movies in HD before he died. They are beautiful, and will forever be.

Boo Nell: It was sad for me to hear Franco talk about the negative criticism his films received for being too beautiful (!?!) Sad until you study the lives of artists of past ages who also got knocked for the true beauty they created. The Romantic poet John Keats, dying at 26 of tuberculosis, spoke to his friend, "Write on my tombstone Here Lies One Whose Name Was Writ on Water." With the vicious criticism his poetry received in his own time ( Byron though the critics killed John Keats) this poet of the beautiful truly thought he would be forgotten. Now many place him second only to Shakespeare. And speaking of the latter, the first public mention of him is in 1592, from a critic calling him "An upstart crow" ( Imagine! A mere actor thinking he can actually write plays!) Today Robert Greene is only remembered as the nut who criticized Shakespeare.

Great director, I have seen most of his films and I love visual aspects as well as cast, music and content. The greatest are: JESUS OF NAZARETH, ROMEO AND JULIET, TRAVIATA, TEA WITH MUSSOLINI, BROTHER SUN SISTER MOON.

MARTINKUK1: Composer Nino Rota wrote music for Fellini films, including the beautifully heartbreaking score to La Strada in the 1950s. Zeffirelli tapped him for The Taming of the Shrew, then the magnificent music for his Romeo and Juliet, perhaps rivaled only by Tchaikovsky's famous Overture. And then Francis Ford Coppela hired him for the score of The Godfather. Zeffirelli knew and picked the best.

QDEP, Maestro. His comments here about beauty and what opera goers really want are absolutely correct. Bieto is a regie-vandal, Zeffirelli was a regie-king.

"Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises Faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life; and everyone that is living and exercises Faith in me will never die at all. Do you believe this?" (John 11: 25, 26) RIP
