Todays video takes a close look at four golf clubs that have similar lofts but perform very differently. A 7 wood, 9 wood, 4 Hybrid and a 4 iron are all under scrutiny, how do they perform differently and who might they suit?

I can't get a hybrid to launch over 6 or 7 feet off the ground for some reason. I gave up the 3 wood several years ago and added a 7 wood. Then 2 years ago I removed my 4 and 5 irons and added a 9 wood. The consistency of launch of my 9 wood whether on the tee or in the rough has been one of the few bright spots in my game. The 9 wood is spectacular. One of my favorite clubs.

I hit 55 last year, and as a senior golfer, treated myself to a G430 9W as a birthday present. Wow! Game changer for me. After many many inconsistent iron strikes when trying to hit Par 3 greens at 150+, the 9w is amazing. Much easier to hit, with the type of ball flight and shot shaping a good iron player can generate. It's like having a cheat code. I don't reach the ball speeds or carry given here, which makes this club even more useful. I have also taken my 3w out of the bag. Whilst it may give a bit more distance, my 7w (again Ping g430) offers only a little less distance, but 5x as much reliability.

As a senior golfer I would always favour hybrids and lofted woods. I think it is partly about what suits your eye and swing speed, but also what type of course (especially your home course) do you play on most? If you play predominantly parkland courses with ponds or ditches or bunkers you have to get height on then a lofted fairway wood will probably suit you better. However if you play on links type courses or (like mine) a down-land course where hurting winds and side winds are a factor then a lower ball flight with a hybrid will probably suit you better.
@davidgee6110

My thoughts are the same. Home course is links style with ocean winds.

Thank you Andy. I think at the end of the day it comes down to the individual swing of each person hitting the clubs. Some might prefer the woods , some the hybrid and the real ones go for the 4 iron. 😊😊😊

Totally agree with the results. I now carry driver, 5 & 7 wood, 5 & 6 hybrid, 7 iron to GW. Golf companies need to alter iron sets and offer more choice if you have a 7 iron swing of less than 90 mph then forget 4 and 5 irons.

My 7 iron swing speed is over 90 mph, but still my longest iron is 6. Currently I carry driver, 7w, 9w, 5h, 6i-pw, wedges 48, 52, 56 and 60. I'd like to have either 4 or 3 wood, but there is no room for either of them in my bag. Gap between pw and 52 wedge too much because of these crazy strong lofted irons nowadays.

Testing things over the winter and added the 5h I should have got at my last fitting but couldn't get used to the look of it, so driver 5w 7w 3or4h depending on conditions 5h 6i to PW 52 and 58 I know I could take both 3 and 4h but remove the doubt same with wedges, I do use 7i from around the green too - keep it simple! If you take out 8 or 9 clubs and shoot same as you with 14 then reconsider what you are doing

Getting the Secret Weapon delivered tomorrow and just ordered probably PXG's last Lucky7 deal as they have changed their pricing policy today. To get max savings I went 3x sugar daddy's, 4 and 5 hybrids and the 6,7 gen 7's. I've also been fitted for 0317 T's in 8,9,PW. Iv completely dropped driver, 3 wood and 4,5 irons from the bag though I will probably pick driver and a 5 iron up again at some point. I'm going without one as it's the club I'm having no success with at all. It's costing me around 10 shots per round I'm so bad with it. I get 30 days to try things out and can get a gapping session in all part of the deal to get gapping right after iv played a few round. Possibly even some loft and lie changes will be required. PXG fitting is second to none. A gen6 7 wood stays in my bag from last season, an eye opening club I'd never considered and never hit before. Mostly excited for the Secret Weapon though.

I love the 9 wood. One day I just couldn't hit my driver straight. I ditched the driver and used 9W off the T the rest of the day, and it was 9W to fairway, and depending on the par of the hole, 9W from the fairway for the second shot as well. 9W to 9W. I even used the 9W for some bump and runs. I've never used one club so much in a round of golf. It saved the day.

Have to agree, Andy. As a senior player I’ve been playing a 6 hybrid and 7&5 fairways, all Cobra, since coming back into the game. At the weekend I tried the new G440 7w with the CB shaft. Off the deck it carried 10 yards further than my current Cobra, and as the sleeve allowed lie adjustment, going to -1 deg flat gave me a line ball first shot. I laughed my socks off. They also have a 9w in the lineup and I’m thinking if that works that could replace my hybrid, so back to four woods, irons and a putter like when I started as a kid! Development is definitely being aimed into these clubs and likely having more of an effect than for drivers.

Really useful video, thanks. I find fairway woods easier off the tee than hybrids but the latter better on the fairways. Not sure if it’s down to the head size giving confidence on the tee at least and then shorter hybrid shaft off fairways. Have bought and sold a few of each over the past 12 months but settled on a TaylorMade Qi10 Max 4 hybrid which I played with yesterday for the first time and was very pleased. It’s got a confidence inspiring larger head and 23 degrees of loft so a nice compromise.

Love these summaries, thank you sir! Working on trying to figure out what I want to do with the top end of my bag. I dropped my 3 hybrid for a 5 wood last summer. I find that it's better out of the rough because of the mass of the club and the club face is ahead of the hozel. But as you say, it flys higher, is easier to hit straight and as such is more of a weapon. I'm still carrying my 4 hybrid because I can hit it lower and it's easier to hit than the 4 iron. I still carry a 5 iron.

I think you are building a case for putting an older tech (much less expensive) club in there to reduce a quite large gap between how far your 5 iron goes and how far one of the woods you reviewed goes. Could be as much as a 35 yards gap. and we older golfers or otherwise shorter hitters often end up having to hit something that goes the distance that you havent a club for.

Interesting that fairways have progressed so much whereas driver performance in terms of distance are now limited, so do we eventually get to a point where the fairway gets close to driver performance? Interesting too that the 7W is 42” long and has a head volume close to a 1990’s driver ( my 1990s driver was 43”, 3W 42” and 5W 41” ).

I carry 2 and 3 Adam’s hybrids, they’re so easy to hit I feel like I’m cheating.

Good video … but from the data, your club head speed (for your driver is 100 mph … which is at least 10 faster than an amateur golfer's 18 hcp For sure, everything with a landing angle lower than 40 degrees is useless for an amateur 7w is to make distance instead of 3 or 5 … then hybrid or wood to complete the set … iron from 7, I would say
